WIW: Red & Black Drape & Structure

I'm working towards finding my "sweet spot" with drape and structure. I'm wanting the ease and comfort of my EF pieces to be combined with sharper shoulders and structure.

Today's outfit started with my dark red EF drapey dress. I then added my houndstooth patterned tights for a bit of fun and pattern. On top of the dress, I added my black suit blazer - this is the structure that will keep the drapey dress "in check" and give me a more prominent shoulder line. Black patent pointy toe booties and rectangular black patent clutch add even more structure - and a bit of shine.

Rose gold/black watch, gold wedding band, red specs and red lipstick finish off the outfit.

Thoughts? Tweaks or suggestions? As always, all comments welcome.

Love your posts! A great inspiration for work looks! I love that you always add your personal edgier element, like booties or pattern fab tights!

What's not to love! this is again a perfdect balance between structure and drape! And, hah, I wear houndstooth tights today, too:-)

Well done. Structure. Drape. Comfort. Professional.

Classic Shannon - you look fab!

Looks successful. How do you feel? My EF dresses are for summer. I have tried a blazer but it hasn't looked right to my eye. Maybe an assymetrical jacket? Your dress looks great with the blazer. I am watching your outfits closely as this is inspiring stuff. I would love to find a way to winterize those summer dresses.

FABULOUS. I love the hose, Shannon. You look Playfully Professional.

(I was wondering when your love for structure was going to re-surface).

I think you've found the perfect balance, Shannon.  I love your outfit.

Another great look! I love patterned tights, and I love houndstooth, and my local Macy's carries Hue, so...I'll be right back...

Love it! Some people would look staid in a burgundy dress and black blazer, but your tights and shiny boots keep this outfit from looking anything like staid! I learn from your reflections about structure vs. drape.

So after I got dressed and posted this thread, I got hit with a nasty migraine (it's been hovering for a couple of days) and ended up going back to bed rather than to work. On the bright side I can wear this outfit tomorrow since nobody other than YLF saw it today!

Joy - I consider my EF drape front short sleeved dresses summer dresses but this EF dress has long sleeves and is a bit of a heavier fabrication meant for fall/winter. I tried my summer ones with tights but they did not work at all.

Angie - it was just a matter of time wasn't it? :) In fact my first shopping search for spring is a sharp shoulder blazer - more about this in an upcoming post.

Thanks for your feedback ladies :)

Well done, Shannon.  I think your closet is versatile enough to accommodate a sliding scale of drape/structure options however you want.  :)

Fabulous! The shine of the patent & the texture of the hose add so much to this look - the devil is in the details :) :)

Great success! Another vote for hose and shoes giving it that little edge! Well done.

Love everything about this look. Sophisticated, today and great use of color and proportions.

Sorry for the migraine and understand how one can hi-jack the day.

Superb outfit, Shannon! I love the colors, the drape and structure, the length of the dress, the patterned tights. Everything works beautifully.

I think you nailed it. Enough drape, enough structure, perfect.
