WIW: Floral Wildcard

There's been talk on YLF lately about "wildcard" items - an item we buy that doesn't fit our normal style sensibilities or seems a little out of the norm for us. This floral bomber jacket is one of those items for me. Although florals are very much part of my style, a longer silky bomber jacket is a style that I would not normally choose. It has a lack of structure that I enjoy in a topper. But when you fall in love, what are you gonna do, right???

So today is the debut of my crazy floral silky longer bomber jacket - I have paired the jacket with a column of colour in a fairly fitted black tank and pencil skirt….aaaahhhhh….there's the structure I crave. I added my black Doc Marcie boots for a smidgen of edge and my green handbag for a punch of colour and a nod to spring (which seems to have finally arrived for real). I scrunched the sleeves of the bomber for a bit more added structure. Purple/clear specs and a swipe of bright pink lipstick (new for spring) complete the outfit. Happiness factor? Waaaaaaaaay up there!

What do you think? does this work? The jacket also looks fab with a white tee and faded BF jeans, over my EF dresses, white jeans…As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Bomber jacket & tank: Smart Set
Skirt: Cleo Petite
Boots: Doc Martens
Handbag: Cleo (thrifted)

Totally love it! Yay for wildcards that up the happiness factor!

I just recently bought a wildcard item at the thrift store  that's also a "so not me" floral jacket (its at the dry cleaners now) and your outfit has made me even more excited to try different ways of styling it!

Totally gorgeous, girlfriend! I love "wildcard" items. I predict this will be a real spring wardrobe workhorse. And you look fantastic with a pink lippie :)

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Totally works! I think the shoulders have a lot of structure, which is why it works so well. And the great colors and pattern of course!

Having some serious jacket envy here!  Love this outfit :)

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

More jacket envy. This certainly looks fabulous and perfect for celebrating spring's arrival.

Cute jacket, Shannon! What a happy piece for you. I think that paired with the structured skirt, it hits your sweet spot perfectly!

It must be a spring thing! Change is in the air and time to experiment! Your jacket also has a lot of the colour-of-the-year, radiant orchid. The jacket is a departure, but you own it in typical TS style. I like this very much, and would like to see the after work version with BF's and T.

Love it! I am fond of florals on black backgrounds, and this is a nice one. I like how you kept everything else simple, but also the punch of the green handbag. YLF!

    love it. springy, fresh colours
    do you still have snow??

Great wildcard item for spring.  I bet it would look smashing with a white t, a chambray shirt, or for a real bold look, mixed with black and white stripes.  Lots of potential with this piece, nice find!

  • Runcarla replied 10 years ago

    *ooops!*

    What a happy, smart, ensemble!

The bomber will be such a fresh piece for your spring and summer.  And you've found the way to make the proportions right every time -- your formula is working beautifully for you.

Florals are such a great pick-me-up!

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Wow!!! I love that jacket!! Gorgeous colors and such a sleek bomber! I think a longer bomber looks less sporty. Which is nice :) ... Beautiful top to toe Shannon!

Leopardluxe - I look forward to seeing your wildcard jacket in action!

Karie - and I predict you're right (lol)! I just realized this jacket will also work with my new olive cargo pants.

Shevia - that's an excellent point. The shoulders fit really well in this jacket. If the shoulder seams were too wide and off the shoulders, the jacket would definitely be too unstructured for my liking.

Suz - I'm getting there in terms of figuring out my sweet spot. I'm having so much fun combining structure with unstructured.

Runcarla - you might see the after hours version on Friday. I'm off work that day for a dental appointment and take my car in and was thinking it would make the perfect spring running around outfit!

Janet - I much prefer florals with a black background too. I think it helps to diffuse the sweetness of the flowers.

Neel - I'm liking the longer length bomber too. I have a shorter black and white one and you've hit the nail on the head in that it's more sporty. That's probably why I don't reach for it too often. Well that and it's the kind of fabric that attracts every piece of lint in the air!

Thanks so much for your feedback Robidi, Joy, A, Lisa and Beth Ann :)

    Killer

The floral is perfect over the column of colour and black booties.

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Gee, I have  one simillar color combo floral type of mesh(!) bomber, so how could I not like this one, too!

  • Peri replied 10 years ago

    I love it!

  • rabbit replied 10 years ago

Works beautifully!  Doesn't look so much 'wildcard' as 'meant to be' :)

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Works perfectly! Love the floral bomber!

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I got a big smile on my face when I opened this and saw the gorgeous floral and your happy smile!  Needless to say, I love this!

I have a bright silky bomber too (mine is blues and greens) and I too love it over a column of black.  It's great in the summer too over a sundress for that tiny bit of warmth and shoulder covering in the AC.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Love the jacket! This type of floral always calls to me! You have a knack for them for sure.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Angie - I'm so glad I learned about the concept of a column of color from you.

    Diana - I knew you'd love this :)

Una - I don't know if it's so much a "knack" for them or an "obsession" for them - lol!

    Thanks all.

  • Astrid replied 10 years ago

It's fantastic! I love everything about this outfit.

  • Aida replied 10 years ago

Of course it totally works, looks super over black with some skin showing. I will enjoy floral bombers through you, they just don't seem to work on me (and I've tried many). I'm still thinking on what my wildcard will be. I think you'll be getting plenty of wear from yours!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Love it too & I would also love to see it with white.

  • K. Period. replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I saw this pop up on the list and it just took my breath away! So fab on you!

  • DonnaF replied 10 years ago

I love this on you, and I love this print as a longer bomber jacket.  I'm thinking that this same print as a blouse or swimsuit would not be nearly as fab, KWIM?

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

    Nice!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

I really like it Shannon. I don't usually shop at SS but I may need to reconsider and check out this bomber (it may be just the right cropped length on me :-) )
    Love the lipstick!
