WIW: Bomber with a dress

Sveta posted a beautiful bomber jacket that she has ordered from NAS and it inspired me to try and wear my black/white bomber more. I've only worn it a handful of times and I think it's because of the waist surrendering silhouette a bomber provides But that doesn't mean it can't be flattering on me, so here goes.

I started today's outfit with my abstract print wrap dress, which has black, purple, two shades of blue, taupe and cream in it. I added a thin black belt for some waist emphasis - not a wide belt as I didn't want the belt to be too much of the focus on this outfit. Then I added my black and white bomber jacket on top. I think it works because the white in the jacket pulls out the light cream in the dress and the thin black belt works with the sleeves of the jacket and still hints at my waist despite the bomber silhouette.

I then added my bone/silver sandals and my white clutch for more "brightness". A swipe of pink lipstick and I'm ready to head out the door.

So does this work to your eye? Is this how to wear a bomber with a dress? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Bomber: Material Girl
Dress: Attitude by Jay Manuel

Generally speaking I don't love the bomber jacket trend BUT I love this one on you. I think it works very well over the dress, and I find the proportions very attractive. I also think the accessories are all perfect. The dress is quite a strong piece but the jacket really takes centre stage here yet the outfit is "balanced". I love it.

Well done Shannon, I think you pulled this one together perfectly.  You definitely made it a flattering look for you!

You obviously don't have the same heat wave going through... the thought of wearing a jacket makes me sweat...

For me a well fitting  bomber is like a jacket for me, but trendier-  so yess, it all works fine here, still amazed by those shoes and the monochromatic dress:-)

I think this looks great Shannon! I like the bomber with this dress a lot.

For the reasons Deb said I think it works well. YLF!

I still love this dress so much. It's one of my faves on you. That pattern is Helmut-esque and awesome. It also reminds me vaguely of the CM floral moto...I am not entirely sure why.

Anyway - I think this outfit totally works, and once again, that workhorse shoe/ sandal is in play. What a good buy that turned out to be for you!

I think the bomber works well with the dress. I think the belt works the way you envisioned to provide waist definition under the bomber.

This looks wonderful on you. Those sandals work well with the bomber and the dress. Can we give you our orders for that white Danier clutch? :)

Love that bomber - terrific outfit Shannon!

I enjoy your WIW's a lot. You always look so good, and I enjoy reading your posts as well. Your use of phrases, "I was inspired, I started with, hints at waist emphasis, brightness and a swipe of lipstick. I am a visual and you paint a picture perfectly :) You are so lovely.

    Terrific with that dress!  YLF!

Shannon, you are one of the fabs I think can do no wrong. I love the casual dressy blend and creativity you have. I rarely need to dress up, but if I did I'd want to look like you.

I really like the pattern and shape of that dress on you, and I think it works with the bomber. My first leather jacket (in the 80s) was a bomber and I loved it, but I tend to gravitate more towards a waist defining shape these days (since I seem to have lost mine a bit...)

love the shoes! They look like they might work for me as a low, light colored shoe! are they as comfy as they look?

Deborah - oh I'm so glad you mentioned the proportions work to your eye. I was worried that the length of the bomber might be off to work with this dress.

Elizabeth - oh believe me, it's hot here. But not in my office since they repaired the A/C. It's quite chilly inside. So the jacket comes off when I step out the door.

Suz - I think I'm going to cry a little when this dress finally falls apart. It has been a total workhorse for me for 3-4 years and worn for every season. They had it in black when I bought this one and wish I had purchased it as well - I love the shape and comfort factor.

Joy - I actually got this clutch and sent it to Ingunn in Norway. If they still have it, I can certainly grab one for you. It is very inexpensive but great Danier quality.

    Ruthe - :)

Peri - oh my goodness...you've got me blushing. Thank you so much. Believe me, I can do PLENTY wrong (lol!) but hopefully it's getting less frequent thanks to YLF help.

Rebekahphoto - yep, these shoes are definitely as comfy as they look. They were a 20 out of 10 on the comfort scale right from the start. The brand is Fugitive by Francesco Rossi. In fact based on the comfort and quality of these, that is a brand I'll be looking to again.

Thank you all so much for letting me know the bomber/dress combo works. It's fun to try something new and different :)

Oh, yeah, it works and you are the bomb!!!  I also adore your shoes.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Shannon, it works perfectly! I wish you wear this bomber more often, it is such a great and fresh style of the jacket. I squeal with glee every time you post it!
I was scouting The Bay in a hope to find one as well but no luck. Now my fingers crossed NAS bomber is not too short!

Vicki & Sveta - my sincere apologies for not getting back to this post until now. Thank you so much for your comments.

Sveta - it's because of YOU that I tried this outfit and will continue to work with this bomber. It's starting to feel more "me" now. Crossing my fingers for you too :)

I'm like Deborah looking slightly askance at the bomber trend.  I think the graphic quality of this one, however, really gives your dress a modern touch and adds structure to the softness of the dress.

I'd love to see wear the bomber in a casual trouser outfit!

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

    :-)  <cheering from a sidelines>

I never would have though of this, but it works super well. I ordered a bomber from NAS, too (the Mural) and I can't believe how much I love it. Wow. But, I have no idea how to style it, so thanks for the inspiration! Not that I ever wear dresses these days... : (
