WIW and K/R

Here's quick look at what I wore today to go get groceries - dark wash straight leg DKNY jeans, my patent black Ara booties, grey Gap mesh sleeve sweater and my 3-4 year old pink/charcoal/black cropped 3/4 sleeve houndstooth jacket. Still love this jacket so much! The grey sweater peeking out from underneath won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I kind of like the look.

My Keep/Return is a coat for early winter. Right now I'm wearing my navy London Fog trench style coat but fairly soon, it won't be warm enough. But it also won't be cold enough to break out my red long puffer coat from Land's End. So I've been looking for an "in between" coat.

I found this Laundry coat last night at Winner's and really like it. It's what I'm calling a "pea coat with a twist" - it has a retro faux fur collar and flounce at the bottom that's tugging on my retro heart strings. However, my sugar eye may be blinding me to fit and style issues so am turning to my wise eyed YLF friends.

A couple of things - the weight of the wool coat is perfect for the time of year I'm looking for, it has deep front pockets which is crucial, the collar is removable if I want to change up the look, the fit on the shoulders is fabulous, I'm wearing it here with a blazer underneath so ensure it will fit for layering. I have turned under the sleeves as they need shortening so that might be making the sleeves look a wee bit bulky. It will work well over both trousers and skirts/dresses and boots. The issue of course is the back fit - which is almost always impossible for me. There is a bit of excess in the middle of my back. I did try on the size smaller but then it was too snug on my hips. I don't mind the back fit but again, I might not be seeing it logically.

I also realize the flounce at the bottom is a style that will not appeal to everyone but it is something I quite like. However, set me straight if it looks goofy.

So what do you think? Keep or return and keep looking?

Shannon, the outfit you are wearing is gorgeous!  I actually really like  the sweater peaking from under the jacket, it adds a lot of visual interest.

The new coat is beautiful and personally I like the flounce.  I can not say too well from the photos but how is the fit around the waist - it looks to me that there might be some excess material in the rea from waist up to the armpit.

I can see why you love the houndstooth jacket so much.  Pure Shannon fabness. In contrast, I am not sure the new coat gets you...I want to the flounce part to be higher up so that it skims your hips, like more of a fit and flare or trapeze style.  With the flounce closer to the hem, I feel like it creates more fullness through the middle, even with the nipped in waist.  I love the idea but I would keep looking.  But I;m anxious to hear what others see.

I love your outfit today - the jacket is cute and retro and awesome.

I vote yes to the coat, too.  I like the flounce, it looks flirty and quirky to me.

Love the new coat enough that I am tempted to go to winners and take a look.  I think it is a keeper.

Love your today's outfit, the houndstooth jacket fits you beautifully.  I hope you keep the jacket forever.  You KNOW houndstooth is so on trend so this is the year to give it lots of wear.

As for the coat, sorry I don't think it fits right it looks too long waisted hence the bunching in back.  Or, if this is a photo flaw I could be wrong.

Tanya, Nicole and Denise - I think you are all seeing the fit issue I'm wondering about. I think my short torso doesn't work with the body length of the coat and that's why there is excess fabric. Hmmmm...leaning towards returning.

Glad you like my retro houndstooth jacket :)

Hi Shannon I love the retro jacket.
The new coat I like but I think it looks too large for you. Perhaps continue looking? I know loads of coats are arriving now in stores.

    J'adore #1!
As for the coat I am a little unsure. I do kinda like it, but it does seem roomy across your back.

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

I absolutely love the first outfit.

As for the coat, without reading any of your pros and cons, I'm not keen. It looks a bit big, the peplum-y bottom makes it look too wide to my eye and the silhouette looks like something that can look flattering with very small selection of outfits, probably pencil-skirts and seath-dress ones only, and not with pants.

(Am I still in your good books? :-D)

    Love what you're wearing today.
Not loving the new coat.  I agree with what Denise and Ornella said with the too long waist and causing a too wide silhouette.  And, though I know it has to go over a jacket the sleeves also look too big/loose for your arms.  I really wanted to like it as I read about it.

#1 is absolutely stunning on you! What a fun mix of textures. Gorgeous.

I am glad you returned the coat -- it is not fab enough for you!

Thank you all for your fab feedback - navy coat went back as you were right - not the one for me :)

Love the hemline of the new coat. I say keep.

Love the little houndstooth jacket, one very stylish outfit for grocery shopping :)

I have already seen your other coat, but I love your WIW!

Omg, that doggy tooth topper is awesome! You look so chic!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

You look radiant today, Shannon!  So glad to see someone dress for shopping!   I'm so tired of cartoon character jammie pants in line at Walmart.

While I agree that the coat, while it had many things to commend it, wasn't a 10.  Still, do you have any coats with a "retro" or feminine look?  I think this part of your persona is still alive and thriving, so maybe a coat with retro styling would be a good choice.

Both toppers are divine. I love the swing jacket it really elevates the jeans to perfection. The coat -- I love the flounce the color and the double breast. I know it's a style I would pick for myself in a heartbeat. It doesn't seem to be a stylistic fit for you. Does it come in a different (non-traditional) color? The style of this coat plus a vibrant color would read more "Shannon" to me.

Your WIW looks so Shannon and fab.  As for the coat up for K/R,  like Nicole D. I want the flare to be from the waist.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

I could steal that houndstooth jacket!  Just fabtastic!

I am rubbish at coat fits ..... so I will leave that to the experts.  Hope you find something soon.

I love the layering that you have done with your houndstooth jacket and grey sweater. You look so great.
I am leaving the coat to those who know more than I do about fit.
