WIW: Sheath, booties & leather

I recently thrifted this Jones New York sheath as a place holder for my beloved BR ponte knit sheath which is now too large. I like the length, the dressier fabrication and the full lining. Today is its maiden voyage and I thought I'd try a blouse layering look as per Ingunn - I love it when she layers a top underneath her sheath.

The blouse I chose is my gold/black/brown snakeskin print VC blouse. I then added my large black polka dot hose for some fun and a bit of pattern mixing and am wearing my black patent Ara booties - again! These are so comfortable I want to wear them every day.

My slouchy black leather hobo bag with gold hardware is my choice today and jewelry is two rings. When I step out the door, I'll pop on the Spiegel leather jacket.

So what do you think? Does it all work together? I over exposed the pics a bit to counteract the darkness of the outfit. Unfortunately the photos do not show just how perfectly this sheath dress fits.

I do have one question though - a v-neck is the best shape for me since I have a short neck and it helps to elongate my upper half. Should I have Wonder Woman change the neckline on the sheath to a v-neck? or is the current shape more versatile?

As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Blouse: Vince Camuto
Sheath: Jones New York (thrifted)
Hose: Hue
Booties: Ara
Handbag: Christopher Kon (thrifted)
Leather jacket: Spiegel

Oh, you look so fab! I love everything about this.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Love the buttoned up look here, so I say keep the collar and love the Spiegel done up - maybe even better than open - you look fab!

Love this! So sharp with the leather jacket.

Your ensemble hits it on all cylinders. Moreover, the color scheme is so warm and appropriate for fall. Once again, you look great!

You look just lovely, Shannon. The VC blouse is gorgeous -- color, print, everything! And I like the subtle pattern mix of snakeskin blouse and dotty hose. I am with Shevia in liking the "buttoned up look" you have achieved with this outfit, so maybe it would be good to have one sheath with this higher neckline and, perhaps, another one with a V-neck for wearing sans blouse. Love the red lipstick.

Ooh, thanks for the inspiration! I am going to put a blouse under my black sheath today. You look gorgeous!

Love everything about the outfit Shannon, you look stunning.  I would leave the dress as is.

Shannon - I love, love, love this outfit on you!!  Vee neck, schmee neck!!  The blouse looks fab with your coloring and the angles or the collar actually create 2 little vee's.  Your neck is lovely and does not look short!!  The spiegel jacket looks fabulous on yor and I love the patterned hose and booties.  This is perfection!!

Love the pattern of the blouse with the polkadotted hose! Lovely.

Love this Shannon and I think the neckline looks fine. You look very sleek.

  • Joyce B replied 10 years ago

You look very elegant and the entire outfit looks fab and very polished. I like how you put it all together and how you finished it.
That is a great idea to extend the use of a sheath dress. Now I need to find some nice fluid long sleeve tops, I have not had much luck with that lately.

I love the outfit and the leather jacket is a perfect topper.  How difficult is it to change the neckline of a dress like that?  Depending on the cost of the alteration I'd say go for it.

I need smelling salts!  Really!  I usually have a poison eye for colors that don't work for me --- like this yellow, but I'm blown away by the energy of this color paired with sleek black.

I hear you on v-necks.  With my larger size and bust, I know it's my best look, too.  However, I feel the neckline as it is is more on trend and I think you wear it well.  What about a sleek black v-neck sweater or peplum top to wear over a black pencil?  This would give you a "two-piece dress" look for times when you crave the V?  What does this sheath look like under a blazer, without scarf or necklace?

Off to revive myself..............then to the gym.......(singing)  "Did I ever tell you you're my Hero?"............

    So chic.

I love layering under a sheath dress. I have said it before I adore this blouse. Especially when the print is complemented by the dots in the hosiery. Marking as a fave. Divine!

I'm on team "leave it".  I'm also on the large bust/should wear a V side, but I have a sheath that's similar, and I think some just look better with the high neck.  I think if you change it, it may not be as versatile for shirts underneath.

I love how you pair it with the shirt underneath and the "leg party" that is those tights!

Shannon, I think this is WONDERFUL.  And now I have some inspiration for what to wear one day next week :).  Can't comment on the neckline... I also don't care for high crew type necks on me, but they can work if you can distract from it, like you did here, or with a scarf, or necklace, or jacket...  but do you want to have to?  I like the idea of having two...

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Wow!  You look stunning!!  Love the shirt and dress combo and the sweet polka dotted hose!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Holy moly! I'm blown away by your positive feedback - thank you all so much :)

I think you've convinced me to leave the higher crew neckline on the sheath as is and I'm thinking of having Wonder Woman take in my v-neck ponte sheath (that would probably still be less expensive than buying a new one and would be a custom fit) and then I can have the best of both worlds. Or as Beth Ann suggested, simply find a v-neck black sweater to wear with my black pencil skirt to get the same effect.

Shevia - I'm really liking the versatility of the Spiegel jacket and how it can be worn in different ways. Glad I jumped on that lemming train!

Beth Ann - this sheath looks great underneath many of my jackets (if I do say so myself!), with a scarf, with a statement necklace - oh yeah, it's gonna be a workhorse!

Thanks again all - you sure know how to make a gal's day :)

Shannon, you look absolutely sensational!! I LOVE this on you. The dotty hose with the pattern on the sleeves of that gorgeous blouse is just brilliant and the combination of textures and shine and the colours....wow!!

I think it's a great idea to alter the ponte sheath when you're done your weight loss. Then it will fit perfectly. And you can have two! Because this one works super well.

  • qfbrenda replied 10 years ago

You look fantastic!  I love the all black version with all the different textures.

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

Wow Shannon - this is fab in every way, I agree with the others, don't change anything!  And love seeing the Spiegel looking so glamorous on you.

  • shemarie replied 10 years ago

I think this is drop-dead gorgeous on you, Shannon.  I love it all!!  I can't decide which I like better:  the blouse/sheath look or the jacket/blouse/sheath look.  They are both just flat-out stunning.  All of the subtle texture/shine/patterns make you just glow!!  I must learn how to do this!

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 10 years ago

Fantastic I love that blouse under the sheath look and extending it for the season.  I love doing this myself but gotta say with the patterened tights and booties, it's spectacular!  A wonderful formula you should do again!!!

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

This is a great outfit! The current shape of the neckline looks good to me, but if you would be more comfortable/confident with a v-neck, then go for it.

Did you consider trying a belt with this? Something that might mirror the color of the blouse? Just curious :)

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Yes - I would turn this into a V-neck if I were you. The sheath along with the polka dot tights and boots are absolutely fabulous!  Love them!  (Not as crazy about the color of the blouse or it being buttoned all the way up - but that's my issue, not yours!)  You look great!

  • san replied 10 years ago

You look especially good today.  I love the color of the blouse and I like the neckline as is here.  The dotted hose and other accessories are perfect.  This looks like an outfit for a special business event.

  • Atlantia replied 10 years ago

    Those polka dot hose!  Love!
You look so pulled together and strict with the layering and all buttoned up, but the drape, color, and polka dots make it loosey goosey.  Fantastic!

  • Ornella replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I am copying this asap. Divine.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I began reading your post like I always do, every word, and then I got to .."added my large polka dot hose..." - and you know my polka dot addiction - so I HAD to immediately go to your pics! OMGoodness, I absolutely, positively, beyond question or reason of doubt, LOVE THIS OUTFIT!  Does it work? DOES IT WORK? Not only does it work, it's beyond killer! I must copy this immediately. As in today. Oh wait, I don't have polka dot hose or a snakeskin print blouse...but I am going to the stores today to make some returns...I could apply a little girl math (I love girl math)...

OK, I've caught my breath now, I did go back and finish reading (but I can't stop clicking on those pics) - I see no reason to have the neckline changed, it's gorgeous as is.

  • replied 10 years ago

What a fab outfit! I rather like the neckline as it is and like Kari, I love the idea of polka dot tights. YLF.

  • Debra replied 10 years ago

Wow, love the sheath and blouse, the spotty tights are gorgeous with the booties, I need a sheath !!!!!!
