Denim Jackets - 4 season work horse?

Just a quick check: are denim jackets something that can be worn year round, like a blazer? Or are they considered more warm season staples?

Great question and one that I've often pondered! I'm beginning to think they are more year-round than I previously thought.

It's too hot for me to wear the casual ones here in summer. I almost always miss my opportunity to wear them but am hopeful to wear them more this year. I think you could wear them like a blazer or cardi in winter if your overcoat fits over the denim.

Why shouldn't they be worn in the winter? Under a coat, of course.

I am so not good at rules...

I think this item is defiantly a year round item! Its all how you style the denim jacket. in the summer I wear them with a dress. In the winter I wear them with colored denim boots and long sleeve top and jean jacket. I love the denim jacket it is defiantly a staple in my closet.

Yes. I wear mine under my coats in Winter sometimes.

I wear mine year round, but on the coldest of winter days I'd probably opt for something different.

I think it depends on the weather in your area. In the south, it's definitely a mid-late fall til mid spring because we're so warm. If you're area is cool enough to wear a denim jacket year round, I think it'd be a great choice.

I don't know why you couldn't wear one year round.
In winter, though, I guess I prefer to substitute a leather jacket. I know you've got that covered, too!

I wear them in winter too. Perhaps I'm a faux pas. Granted, I use light bags in winter and suede all year round.

I plan on wearing my dark denim jacket all throughout the year. I will probably put my white one away when I pack up my summer stuff for the winter.

Thanks for the feedback - looks like wearing them year round works - but I agree with Krista about putting the white one away after summer is done.

I guess I figure that denim jeans can be worn all year round, or a denim shirt or skirt, so I wouldn't think twice about a denim jacket as a summer item (though I can see where a stark white one would seem more summery and might be a little out of place in snowy January).

I've actually seen a few gals wearing them at the (cold) office for those casual days, so yes I think you can wear them year round. I did once this summer.

I wear my blue ones all year round. But I do tend to wear the white one only when it's warm.

Definitely year-round, Shannon....though I tend to wear mine more in the fall/ spring. Summer is so hot where I live that I rarely need any kind of jacket, even at night, and in winter I just don't feel like wearing my light wash denim or my white denim jacket.

But I DO have a dark wash denim jacket that I wore consistently all last winter, layered over dresses (and under a coat, obviously!) and even (gasp!!) with jeans!! It is the same collarless jacket that Claire owns, and it was great to wear with scarves at the neckline.

I will wear any item and any color all year so long as it is weather appropriate. Does that make me a rebel?

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

For me, they are more mild to warm weather wear, because I tend to wear a lot of jeans in the winter and I don't do denim on denim. (Even in different colors, it's still too low contrast for me with all of the same texture.) I also find them just a little bit too stiff for wearing indoors, especially in the lab where I need fuller range of arm motion, so they're mostly outerwear for me.

I think techncially they are a year round item but in reality for me in Australia, I would probably wear mine Spring/Summer/Autumn with Winter being too cold for a denim jacket. And layering under a coat would be to bulky for me.

  • JR replied 11 years ago

I would consider even a white denim jacket in the winter, especially with an all-white or mostly white outfit. Theoretically...

    Year-round for me!
