Black & Blue with kitten heels

I'm not crazy with how this photographed but I like how it looks in the mirror, so that's what I'm going with!

I started today's outfit with my cobalt blue slim leg jeans. I like a less body con top with slim jeans so added my drapey, asymmetrical tie black top. I love the way this top feels on - so soft and light. I'm also really liking the look these days of dainty pointy-toe kitten heel pumps with jeans so popped on my black pumps. For my handbag I've chosen my yellow & cobalt clutch and jewelry is a silver ring and gunmetal cuff.

What do you think? Does this work together? How are the proportions? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Top: Cleo Petite
Jeans: Jeanne Bekker (petite)
Pumps: Calvin Klein
Clutch: Trouve
Cuff: thrifted

Another great combo! And can I add that your hair is looking super good the last couple of photo ops. The slightly longer front/ top is a very feminine look. Your new cut is really working for you!

I like this look, elegant and confortable!

I really like how your hair is shaping up too!

I like the black and cobalt. The only thing I think looks off is the slit for the tie of the shirt, but I think in movement it would look more natural, and it is just the staticness of the photo freezing it like that. I think the pumps look nice with the skinnies!

I think the pumps look great with this and I love the blue and black combination - another terrific outfit!

Shannon this top is a little shorter than what you would normally wear with pants, yes? So I think it may be a matter of the eye adjusting. If anything I would like to see the tie a little more to the side, but otherwise you look look fab! Great colours and lovely combo.

The bag is the perfect choice to complement the outfit.  Looking good.

Love the color combo and that is one great clutch.

Ceit and Deborah have hit the nail on the head with this outfit - I'm feeling uncomfortable with this top. It is true the slit where the tie is on the top moves better IRL and I've actually tried to move it over to the side more and make the gap a little less obvious. But the top keeps shifting and moving so that the tie ends back more towards the middle. There seems to be a high "fuss factor" with it so it may not stay in my closet.

Deb - do you think the top is too short with pants?

Glad you like the pumps with this though - these are quickly becoming a favorite pair of shoes.

Gorgeous! The tie top is so cute and I like how you styled it. I think the tie is probably suppose to be tied higher though to create a kind of blouson look--or at least that is my guess. It looks great this way too. Love the clutch with this--it's so perfect!

Agree with Ceit and Deborah.  I can see the top with a pencil skirt, but I think the proportions are just a little too short for the pants (cutting you in half).  If you could half-tuck, would that help?

    I love it! :)

To my eye, the slit on the top seems too high, as oppsoed to the top looking too short, Shannon. If it were a less deep slit, the proportions would look sorted. Does that make sense?

Loving the concept, footwear and palette though! Have a wee ponder as to whether this top deserves a place in your wardrobe seeing as you've found it fussy to wear.

It's funny: I would actually prefer to see the top a few inches shorter (so, hitting about 2 inches above the crotch point), so we see more leg. For myself, I find that tops that hit right at the crotch point, as this one does, make me feel the most frumpy somehow. I always cut them off or have them tailored (or I don't buy them), because I can't stand tops that hit at this spot, especially if they have a straight hem, vs. a curved one (curved hems offer the same visual as a shorter hem, because you can see more leg, I think). Of course, tops for skinnies or jeggings are a different animal, but for tops with regular old pants that are straight, tailored, or full, I think the 2-inch-above-crotch-point rule is golden (have some vague recollection of Angie saying this on some long-ago blog post, but maybe I am inventing it).

Just my two cents! I think the outfit is cute! Love the snakeskin clutch and the color combo.

Now back to the grant proposal I am writing.....

He he he, Angie and I posted at the same time!

Thanks for the useful feedback ladies.

I remember wearing this top with my black knit pencil skirt and thinking it worked but also remember fussing with it a fair bit during the day. Plus I'm finding with the weight of the tied portion, it keeps sliding off my shoulder on that side which I'm finding really annoying.

I agree that the slit goes up too high - I could add a few stitches to the top to make it smaller and see if that works but I'm not sure I want to bother. I have the feeling this top is going to end up in the donation pile when I get home :)

I really like the architectural, color block look here.  I don't have a problem with the slit and tie, I think they make this outfit different.  However if you think it comes to high, could you sew it up a bit?

ETA -- An alternative would be to wear it higher, bunched up and blousey at the bottom.

I can understand getting rid of a shirt that you have to fuss with because I tend to do the same thing.  However, I think this one would be fine if the slit were sewn closed more.  I like the color combo with the cobalt jeans and black and I especially like the kitten heels.

I love the color combination, and the shoes are fab with the skinnies. As always, your bag adds polish and interest. I like the sweater, but I find assymetric designs hard to work with and prefer more symmetric ones. Your hair is really beautiful now!

Love this look, Shannon.  This is one of my favorite color combos, and the silhouette is very appealing.  I agree with the others that the top could be switched out.  That said, the top is good, just not quite a 10.  I'm learning that 8's can stay for awhile, til the budget and shopping karma allows a replacement.  I like the drape very much.

Love the colors and clutch! I agree the fussy items can be an irritation, but a few stitches in the slit could do wonders. I like the shape of the top and a few stitches might help the ties lay better and need less fussing. Ok maybe im an just in the SYC make it work mode...  Fab pairing with the cobalt jeans!
  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Shannnon for me the top is a tad to short for pants. But I am seeing shorter tops on store this season. I think this top is perfect for skirts (as we have seen on you already). The real question is how comfortable were you wearing this top with pants? Please don't get rid of it, cos its stellar over your pencil skirts.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
Ok...so I've decided I will try to make this top work by adding a few stitches at the top of the slit to make it less obvious and see if this also helps to have the top lay better. If I still end up fussing with it and feeling kind of "meh" when wearing it, out it goes!

    Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

Shannon: send the top to me. I am your donation pile!!

    :)

FWIW: I was so taken with your slim neck and slimmer face that I could not look below neck level!!

    :)

Love the colour combo. I also love the discussion about the top length. I am glad to see that Angie and Jonesy weighed in to say is not too short. I hope not, as I also prefer my tops to end more or less around there. But I agree the slit makes it look a bit odd. And the fuss factor would drive me mad. So I like your idea to alter it a bit and see how that goes.

  • Debbie replied 11 years ago
I love the idea of altering the top a little. I love your outfit. Your hair looks wonderful.
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
Hmm how about tying the ends up high so the hem falls asymmetrically? Love the concept (as you know, a slouchy/oversized top + skinnies + pumps is a staple of mine ^^) for you, especially with the kitten heels.
  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
Aida - I thought of you this morning when I grabbed these kitten heels..."Aida would wear these pointy toe heels with these coloured skinnies".....

Thanks by the way on the compliments regarding my hair. I'm really happy with the direction it's heading. Shout out to Lorri, my stylist - THANKS :)
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
    I totally would, too :D
