WIW: Yellow & Grey

Hmm.....this looked a lot better in my head than in real life. I've paired my  yellow and oatmeal striped v-neck sweater with my darker Glen plaid grey wide legged trousers. There are darker grey flecks in the oatmeal stripes in my sweater which work with the darker grey of the trousers. I wish I had a grey belt but I don't so black had to suffice. I've popped on my trusty Clarks Mary Jane pumps and am using my grey snakeskin clutch.

I'm wondering if my cream handbag would have worked better? Can you help me analyze and let me know what does and doesn't work with this outfit?

Sweater: Gap
Trousers: Ricki's (thrifted)
Belt: Danier Leather
Clutch: Sondra Roberts (thrifted)
Watch: Calvin Klein (thrifted)

In the photos the trousers are reading more taupe than grey, so I think the outfit works well just as you have it. The cream purse could have been an option too, for a little more lightness.  Or you could try some cognac ( boots, belt, or bag) to bring out the earthier tones of the sweater.

The wide legged trousers have a lot of weight compared to the lightness of the top. The last volume + volume look worked better I think because the sweater tied more closely to the bottoms?

I don't know...you certainly don't look horrible but it doesn't have the same wow as some of your other outfits.

I would like it with a lighter bag Shannon. I kind of feel like the top is not bookended right with all other items being dark.

Had you not mentioned your own dissatisfaction it would not have occurred to me that there is anything wrong with this outfit at all. I will start with what I like very much: the semi-tuck with belt showing. Now that I have read the other comments I would be curious to see another light element in the outfit - maybe light shoes or, of course, the cream bag. Meanwhile, rest assured you look quite nice already!

I love yellow and grey, so I think this works great.  I think your cream handbag could have worked well too, but it's great as is.

Like Raisin, I like yellow with grey. With that smile and twinkle in your eye, I'd say you look pretty confident to me. I like that clutch.

I don't see an awful lot wrong to be honest. Just a touch more light in the outfit with  a different bag as you suggested is probably all thats needed. I still like it :)

I think the outfit looks fine too.  The cream bag would have looked nice with the yellow top but the grey looks good too.  The yellow brings some spring into the outfit while the pieces are still warm enough for cold temps.
  • Thistle replied 11 years ago
I love the yellow striped top on you. So happy and so spring.

The trousers look fine with it to me. I think perhaps it is the accessories. What if you paired with some lighted colored shoes and handbag?

I love yellow with grey and I think the outfit is great as is, Shannon.  If you want to tweak it, I would play with accessories; cream bag sounds nice, maybe lighter (greyish or even cream) shoes too?  If you are in the market for a grey belt, may I recommend pewter instead?  it works similarly with a little bit of extra interest.  I reach for mine whenever I do know know which belt to choose.

Keep these fabulous suggestions coming ladies!

Love the idea of a pewter belt (now on my shopping list - thanks Tanya!), swapping to my cream handbag and lighter shoes. Hmmm....I don't have lighter shoes that will work with the length of these trousers. I have been thinking of shortening these a bit to work with a lower heel height since right now, they can only be worn with these shoes. Will give that some more thought.

I think I would like it with a lighter shade of grey (bottoms)
  • rae replied 11 years ago
I think it works just fine outside of your head. But if you want to tweak for next time... hm. White belt and light colored shoes? White bag? Do you still have those taupe silky slouchy pants from last year?
  • catgirl replied 11 years ago
I like this but agree with Ceit that if something is wrong, it's the relative weight of the two items.

    KILLER

I am wearing this outfit formula right now! But will change into a full skirt in a moment as I head off to a client.

A cream bag would have lightened things up, but the clutch looks fab too :)
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
    I think it looks great like this, Shannon! Just not The Most Springy Possible (which is fine!). To remedy that I vote swap to a white belt, python booties, and cream bag/clutch :}
  • annagybe replied 11 years ago
I think the shape of the pants is bugging me more than the color combination. But clearly I'm an outlier.
  • Debora replied 11 years ago
I'm with Angie! You never have a bad fashion day in my book.
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
You don't like slouchy sweaters over wide legs Anna? I have a feeling these are photographing as more flared than they really are; wide leg trousers are SUCH a pain to photograph -_-
  • rachylou replied 11 years ago
Ya, I like it. It's soft spoken, but nothing wrong with that. It's all a juxtaposition of casual and formal, a mix of genres, also nothing wrong with that. A shot of cream would certainly turn up the volume, tho.
  • annagybe replied 11 years ago
If they were wide all the way down, I'd think they'd work better. Right now it looks like they go in at the knee.
  • Krista replied 11 years ago
I don't see anything wrong with any portion of this outfit.  I also like the black belt and shoes, as well as the grey clutch.  I think the other suggestions for lighter accessories are nice, but I would just think of those suggestions as additional options to switch it up next time you wear these pieces.  As usual, YLF! :)
  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

You look fab as is, but you could of course experiment with a lighter bag, or bottom.

  • Aida replied 11 years ago
Alright, Shannon you must clear up the pants for us then! Are they straight all the way down? I know that my wide legs that are NOT even a little flared photograph as nipping in at the knee in almost every photo.
  • Nicole D replied 11 years ago
What?  I like that outfit!  I think the clutch just nails it.  Are those shoes Indigo?  I have an almost identical pair but it has purple stitching, hard to tell in your photo.  You look fab!
  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago
I agree with Ceit - the pants look a little heavy, with this top, to me. I'm not sure I like the fit of them either but that could just be the photo - do they fit well?
  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
Sorry I'm so late in getting back to this thread - crazy busy evening.  Let me see if I can answer all the questions:

Rae - yes, I still have the taupe slouchy trousers but they are a bit snug still. Five more pounds and I should be good!

Aida/Anna - the trouser legs are truly wide legged all the way from the hip to the hem. They don't narrow at the knee but they do seem to photograph that way. Maybe because of how I stand?

Caro - they do fit well but maybe don't flatter?

Should these trousers be donated? They appear to raise some concerns.
  • Missey replied 11 years ago
You are so petite...the volume on the bottom of the pants overwhelms, to my eye.  I think it would work perfectly if the trousers were more straight legged.
  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago
I've been on a train all day, Shannon, but wanted to say "hurrah" for yellow and grey.  I think the wide legs are looking a little flared in this photo.  I don't remember noticing that in other photos.  That could be generating questions.

  • Nanabear replied 11 years ago
What are you talking about? I think it looks great ;)
  • Aida replied 11 years ago
I like the trousers Shannon, mine all photograph the same way. I've just accepted that they are hard to take good pictures of! I know that in person they'll come across as more fluid and elegant, so I don't think you should be worried about culling these.
  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago
Thanks Aida - I appreciate your "eye".
