WIW: The Blues and a K/T question

Today is going to be a bit crazy at work so going for pure comfort here - I popped on my cobalt skinnies (which I haven't worn in ages) and added an old animal print blouse in white/blue/black with a rounded neckline and flutter sleeves.

For footwear I went with my bone laser cut oxfords and my handbag is my cobalt/cream/black quilted leather bag. Jewelry is my white watch and silver wedding band.

My Keep/Toss question relates to the blouse. Is the style dated? Does the fit flatter? What say you my wise ones?

Thanks for looking and I welcome any feedback of any sort :)

Blouse: Reitmans
Skinnies: Jeanne Bekker
Shoes: Dolce Vita
Handbag: Danier Leather

I still like this blouse on you, Shannon! Does it semi-tuck? I think that shirt semi tucked with a white belt would rock. How does it play with your new tube skirt? With your white blazers on top it could look nice too.

The blouse looks fine, but maybe not my favorite of yours. I think it's the neckline -- is it gathered? I got rid of a top or two I had with that detail -- somehow they suited me a few years ago, but I'm not feeling them anymore.

Have you tried rolling the skinnies?

  • cobaltblue replied 10 years ago

I agree - try rolling the skinnies! This top might be more fun with a skirt. I love all your fab pieces individually (amazing handbag!), but at first glance the combination gave me an impression of scrubs. I might just be thinking that way because I'll be taking my baby in for his shots later, and the nurses at my pediatrician's office wear scrub pants in that very shade of blue. :)

Any feedback of any sort? You are a brave woman, Shannon.
OK so, although the colours are lovely on you, I think you are on to it re the top. Those cap sleeves and the trim cut are a little dated but what the heck, pure comfort is your goal and if that's how you feel in the outfit it's a success.

Ceit - the blouse does semi tuck. Could try it next time that way with my wide white belt.

Janet - the neckline isn't gathered per se but does have pleats. That's one of the details that's making me wonder about it being dated. I haven't tried rolling these skinnies - duh....why didn't I think of that???

cobaltblue - scrubs? Too funny. I work in a women's hospital you know...at least I fit in - lol!

    Lantana - thanks :)

I love the cobalt skinnies (they're on my list for fall as something to watch for).  And I really like the print of the top too.  But I see what others are saying about the neckline and the sleeves - they probably do date it just a bit..  Still looks fab though :)

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

I find the shirt a little dated but it would be perfectly fine under one of your many amazing jackets.... You look great though and IRL no one but fabbers would even blink at the idea of dated!

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

I like this outfit as is, but I'd love if that top semi tucked instead, just because that is more fashion forward to do so right now.  And how cool is it that the bag matches so well here!

  • Janet replied 10 years ago

Cobaltblue, I thought of scrubs too -- the combination of the color of the pants and shoes, and the way the pant legs fall on the shoes. That's what made me suggest rolling the pants.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I think the skinnies would look great rolled, and as for the top, well...I was faced with this same dilemma just last week (with a similar top too). I do think it looks a bit dated but it does look great on you. Perhaps under one of your blazers? I ended up putting my top in the donate pile, but I'm likely to pull it out again...decisions, decisions!

I love the cobalt for you. I still like the top but would like to see a semi tuck with a wide belt. Have a great day!

  • Thistle replied 10 years ago

I like the outfit on you, and I would like it better with one of your fab jackets popped over the top.

Not a huge fan of the top but it works, and I don't think it is dated. An Angie pick I just bought has pleating at the neckline.

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

I am on team semi tuck, white belt, roll pants, however, I am digging those cobalt pants.

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

    Also, might I add...lookin lean

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Love the cobalt on you! I think rolling might look terrific with these pants -- give it a try! As for the top, I'm with the others. Semi-tucking or layering with freshen it up a bit.

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

The top does feel a bit dated as is - I guess I'd try the semi-tuck option to be sure but I think it's the neckline and sleeves that are in question to me. I think those cobalt blue pants would look fresher with a simple white top semi-tucked and the legs rolled. Or a black top and black dressy sandals.

I love your outfit with the cobalt jeans.  The shirt is not as up-to-date as the majority of your blouses, but still looks nice.  I agree with others that it will look good under jackets when it gets cooler.

  • rae replied 10 years ago

Ooh, I think a little roll is a good idea! I still like the blouse, though it's not one of my favorites for you. Could still be a good background piece for trendier items.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Thanks for the feedback and great suggestions all!

I do like these cobalt skinnies so they will be staying around. Will definitely play with rolling them to make them more "boy-friendly".

I'm going to try playing with the blouse with semi-tucks, different belts, different bottoms, different toppers and see what I think. If it isn't making me smile, out it goes!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Sounds like a plan, Shannon! You have so many great tops I can see that you might not need to keep it. On the other hand, the colours and pattern are fab for you, so if it works elsewhere it might have a second life.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Sounds like you are on to it Shannon.  The cobalt jeans looks great, and to my eye the top is dated.  It's not that it doesn't look nice, it just looks kind of non descript.  It looks out of place when I think of the other pieces in your wardrobe:)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Deborah - you're on the same wavelength as my DS. His comment when I saw him for 30 seconds before heading out to work? "That's kind of blah, isn't it"?

  • hedgiehog replied 10 years ago

I know I'm late chiming in here but I really love the colour of the bottoms. I see what the other ladies are saying about the top. I am partial to black & white so I like the top. I think it would look great with a topper as well.

  • Peri replied 10 years ago

I don't understand what would make it dated. It looks like a lot of tops in stores today. I know this is my constant struggle...what makes something dated...but I'm really not getting it this time!

  • replied 10 years ago

Wonderful handbag and jeans! I'm only saying this because I know you have lots of other, more modern options, but that style of top is starting to look a little dated to me. Your style is off the charts lately, so if you can do without it, I vote toss. But I am seriously nitpicking because you're in the fine tuning stage. :)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Ok...so I tried on the top again with a few other options and it's just not speaking to me anymore. Time to pass it on.

Claire - yes, I am in fine tuning stage and I only have room in my closet and my life for things I truly want to wear. This isn't one of them.

Peri - I think the pleated neckline and flutter sleeves date the blouse plus it actually IS a few years old. Plus the cut is fairly narrow and long whereas current blouses are more voluminous.

Thanks all for your honest and kind opinions. Onward :)

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Shannon, do you know that one of the people I have learn't to listen too in terms of my outfits, is actually my young master 10 lol.  We know each other so well, and I don't think he has every been wrong.  For him it is simply a matter of something looks like me or it doesn't ha ha

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Deb - I hear you! DS has no problem telling me (politely though) when something doesn't look right on me in his eyes. I guess they know us pretty well, our boys :)

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

It may seem a blah outfit to some, but I do like the length of that top. I wanted to tell you that I use you as an inspiration, because at 5-foot and curvy we have similar body types. You make me realize I need to wear tops at an appropriate length, which I don't always do. Some seem to cut at the wrong place and make me look bigger in the hips and thighs. How do you figure out which ones to tuck and which to leave out? Is there a "magic midsection" guideline?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Julie - I'm so incredibly flattered that you I would provide you any inspiration. Thank you so much :)

I honestly have no particular guidelines as to how long my tops are - I find it depends on the cut, the fabric and drape and what they are paired with. It is pure trial and error.

Maybe post this tomorrow as an Ask Angie question? I would be interested in hearing if she has any particular rules for her clients.

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

    Mmm-hmm, good idea!
