WIW: Full skirt & a bit of vintage

I think I've found a way to wear this green skirt that makes me happy - I've decided that if I'm wearing one item that's voluminous, the rest of the outfit has to have shape and structure. Volume on volume does not make me happy.

So today I've paired this full twirly skirt with a simple black tank and my black short sleeved blazer. IMHO the fit and structure of the blazer balances out the fullness of the skirt. I like that. I popped on my trusty Clarks sandals again and am using a modern oversized print clutch. Then I added two vintage elements with a gold bangle and a green hummingbird brooch. I like pairing the vintage pieces with the modern clutch. Although I'm still not overly thrilled with how wide my hips look in a full skirt, this outfit feels like ME.

What do you think? Have I tamed the full skirt? Do these proportions work? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Blazer: RW & Co (thrifted)
Tank and skirt: Cleo Petite
Sandals: Clarks
Clutch: XOXO (thrifted)
Bracelet & brooch: vintage store

It's really pretty, Shannon! Your hips don't look wide because the skirt is flowy and moves, it isn't a solid rectangle.

Have you tried your Nygard cardi with this? I think it might work too.

Yay! I adore this skirt. Shannon your styling here is just brilliant. The tailoring of the jacket enhances your waist and creates a lovely retro silhouette. It's incredibly flattering..you look stunning.

I love this look on you!

Love the skirt and am glad you found a way to make peace with it. This is a fab look and it would never occur to me your hips look wide.

  • Vildy replied 10 years ago

Yeah the skirt itself is full/wide by its nature but it gives your lower half extra  presence and a way to flounce that around assertively. :D  You could always  stitch down its fullness in the top portion but would you want to bother?

I agree that if you're going to have a full skirt this is a great one for you to have. Love how you accessorized it.

This outfit looks great and the vintage touch feels right for you. This is a beautiful skirt and it's wonderful that you have found a way to wear it.

Very nice - I love the color of that skirt! The proportions looks spot on. I often tame volume on the bottom with fitted on the top, and vice versa. And that clutch is gorgeous, too!

    Beautiful!

I was hoping you would keep this skirt, I love it on you.

Lovely Shannon. It works well with more structure on top of the volume. Gorgeously accessorised as usual.

I think the skirt looks great and your hips don't look wide to me.  I think the fitted top is a good complement to the flowy skirt.

You nailed it, Shannon!! And it is fun to play with your "vintage" or "retro" side, too, don't you think. Especially in the summer!

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Stunningly k-word worthy. You nailed it, Shannon.

I love that skirt on you and you made such a fabulous outfit with it. I like the clutch with the round skirt.
I think I am even going to copy you today :)

    Looks great!

I think this outfit is gorgeous and kind of glamorous. The jacket balances the flowey skirt perfectly. Fear not, there is no wide hip in this picture .

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

    You've nailed it, and it's fab. P.S. I see your kitty. :P

I'm wearing a full skirt today too!  (Will post WIW shortly).  I love this combination, and no, it does not make your hips look wide.  Coming from a pear, I can tell you that skinny skirts emphasize my hips a lot more (just look at the VC tubes...); with a full skirt, it's clear that the volume comes from the skirt and not from your body.

And you match the theme of today's blog post too.  You rock the black footwear.

    What do you think?

I think it looks great! The black tones down the green and
the blazer looks tailor made. I don't think it makes your hips look wide; it lies
perfectly and seems delicate & feminine. The clutch is FAB!

Have I tamed the full skirt?

    Absolutely!

    Do these proportions work?
    IMO: Yes!

Suggestion/alternative: Perhaps this skirt could also be
tamed with a similar shade (but not exactly the same shade) cardigan paired with
    a lace or crochet tank/top. J

Love it! Much more modern and crisp than the version with the retro leopard sweater. I daresay I'd like to see it with the Aras or your Danier leather jacket, too.

  • kellygirl replied 10 years ago

It works! This is a fun look for you. I'm used to seeing you look more modern but vintage suits you just as well. The soft skirt is so pretty against the black blazer. Nice!

    *clapping hands*

So glad you all like this and I'm really glad I didn't get rid of this skirt. It just took a bit of playing with it to find proportions and fit that worked for me.

Joi - thanks for the styling suggestions.

Rae - I'm definitely thinking with the Ara booties and Danier jacket come fall.

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Yay you gotta love a structured jacket :)

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Beautiful proportions and balance of soft and structure.  I still think full skirts don't photograph their best bits --- two dimensions doesn't do them justice, and the movement is delicious.
