WIW: For Gimli

No, not for the Lord of the Rings dwarf, but for the Icelandic fishing town of Gimli. Gimli is one of my favourite small towns about an hour north of Winnipeg, right on the lake. It's got a lovely beach with a boardwalk, a fabulous little restaurant that serves fresh pickerel burgers from fish caught that morning, a coffee house that makes the best lattes I've ever had and my favourite store in the entire world, Tergesen's. This store has been around over 100 years and has the tin ceiling and creaky wooden floors to prove it. The store carries clothing, some jewelry, a few kitchen goods and a wonderful assortment of books. There is also a lovely store called Koma Heim in the town which carries handmade artisan pieces from all over the world. Many of the jewelry pieces my husband has bought me over the years come from that store.

We're heading to Gimli for the day and comfortable clothing is needed. We'll be doing a fair bit of walking plus it's going to be extremely hot today. I started out with a drapey white/yellow tank. I really love this type of tank for hot summer days - nothing too clingy in the heat please. It may not be the most flattering silhouette but that's not my primary focus for today. I've paired the tank with my faded blue cuffed denim Bermuda shorts and my floral lace up shoes. My handbag is my vintage woven with the Bakelite handle.

What do you think? does it all work together? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Tank: Laura Petites (thrifted)
Shorts: Reitmans
Shoes: Blowfish
Handbag: vintage

ah Shannon I am feeling quite a bout of homesickness now. What a lovely description of a place I have been many many times. Have the most wonderful day!

Glory - YAY for Gimli!!! Don't you just LOVE it there? It is so laid back. My husband and I go there often. I'll enjoy my pickerel burger for you :)

Very cute! I love yellow and blue together but yellow isn't kind to me. LOL I like your vintage hand bag but I would probably choose a cross body bag for hands free shopping.

I like how the wicker look on your shoes and bag echo each other.  You look great for a casual day out and about.

this look says, hello summer. perfect for a day at the beach and roaming around town

What a terrific summer outfit. It is nice to see those floral shoes get some airtime!

Great description of your destination. Did you know that Winnipeg has one of Canada's top ten beaches, according to the Globe and Mail? Well, it's true!

I loved reading your description of Gimli. It sounds heavenly :) You look perfectly stylish and summery for a lovely day out.

Shannon my sister has such a fondness for pickerel and orders it whenever she can. Or course outside of Manitoba it can be very difficult to get. So nostalgic.

I was getting ready to talk about you and then I got diverted thinking about those pickerel burgers and coffee.  I want to go to Gimli!!!

You look like a refreshing kiss of lemonade in that yellow top and then there are those great floral shoes to kick it up.  Finally, there's that close-up photo that I crave, because I can see all the detail of your gorgeous summer purse.  Have fun, today.

Had a lovely day today and there was such a lovely breeze off the lake. I could have stayed all day...there is also a new "gastro pub" in Gimli (only open for two months now) called Ship & Plough and so we went there for lunch instead of our usual. One of their lunch specials is fresh pickerel tacos (strips of lightly sautéed pickerel topped with a broccoli slaw, fresh cilantro and a bit of chipotle sauce wrapped in a fresh tortilla) - it was AMAZING!!! Will definitely be going back there. I think there should be a law that you can't go to Gimli and NOT have fresh pickerel!

Suz - you are so right about one of the the world's top 10 beaches. Grand Beach, about 45 minutes north east of Winnipeg, has one of the best beaches in the world and has actually been showcased in several travel magazines and on travel TV shows as well.

Thanks for the kind words about my outfit. I hope you're not getting sick of Casual Shannon yet?

We could never tire of Casual Shannon! Your travelogues alone keep us hankering for more. You are managing a very nice stay-cation I'd say, and those tacos sound amazing!

This is just the sort of outfit that looks appropriate for the day's activities. I love your jute-trimmed floral shoes and that handbag is fabulous! Is the handle covered with leather or is it Bakelite?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Claire - tomorrow's post will be incredibly dull. What do you include in a WIW post for laundry and gardening day???

The handle on the vintage bag is Bakelite (you have a good eye!). I have an EXTREME sugar eye for anything Bakelite, which is getting increasingly hard to find at reasonable prices.

Those shoes are an amazing find. I am enjoying this simple, summery but still delightfully individual outfit.

I was a bit confused--you went to Iceland? But how cool. I really want to visit this place, and this store! Plus, I want to try the best latte ever, right?

  • celia replied 10 years ago

You do casual as fashionably as you do work wardrobe.
Gimly sounds lovely. One of these days we have to visit Winnipeg and surroundings.

Gimli sounds pefectly magical!  Love the sunny colors and cool, easy shapes of your outfit.  I do wonder how you carry a handbag all day.  On sightseeing trips a crossbody has always been necessary for me.  Of course, I'm still carrying "mom" stuff.

  • Aziraphale replied 10 years ago

Hahaha, I clicked on this post because I was all, "Whut?  Gimli?  Shannon doesn't seem the LOTR type..?"

You look great, as usual.  I think it does all work together.  It's a sort of restrained primary colour thing -- yellow, blue, red, but subtle versions of each one.

Aziraphale - I actually AM a HUGE LOTR fan. Own the trilogy on Blu-Ray and have read all the books, including The Hobbit. See...you just never know, do you??? :)

  • Aziraphale replied 10 years ago

Well colour me surprised.  I guess I was fooled by your great style and conspicuous lack of Dungeons and Dragons-inspired jewellery.  ;-)

I am loving casual Shannon week. The town sounds wonderful and your outfit fab including bag!

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Another fantastic casual outfit! Gimli sounds like a delightful town, hope you had a great day.

Cute outfit for your fun day.  I'm with Claire on loving the clever combo of shoes and bag. Enjoy.
