Look what's on it's way to me thanks to my MIL

My mother-in-law knows of my love of vintage and of my love for handbags that are a bit unique.

While I was out the other night getting my hair trimmed, little did I know that MIL and hubby were in cahoots choosing a gift for me. My MIL wanted to thank me for helping her out so much in the last few months, helping her make the move to our home a smooth transition and for being with her at the hospital on the weekend. She is such a sweetheart and I count myself incredibly lucky.

I found out because they kept whispering and giggling last night at dinner and finally they couldn't keep it a secret anymore so hubby just sent me the photo of the purse (with MIL's blessing).

The two of them found this handbag on Etsy and it is so me I can't stand it! It's circa 1960, has authentic Bakelite clasp and handle and is gathered grey patent leather.

I am one lucky lady!

Isn't it Ceit? It's apparently quite small - like an evening bag, which is sooooo cool.

Perfect for you. And the fact that your DH knows what Bakelite is and what would suit you and how to look for it... well, you can't buy that.

I do indeed have the sweetest MIL. If you'll indulge me for a minute, I'll tell you a story about my MIL and why she and I are so close.

My husband was 23 and I was 22 and we were engaged to be married. Young but we'd both been living on our own since we were 18 and we felt ready. My in-laws had always been very accepting of me and we'd gotten along well from day one. One day in March, DH discovered a lump and it was confirmed he had testicular cancer. He went into the hospital a week later to have the testicle removed but during the surgery they were surprised at how large the lump was and had some concerns regarding the cancer spreading. They wanted to slate him two weeks later for additional surgery to check the lymph nodes for malignancy. Sure enough, that second surgery showed every single node as cancerous and we were looking at a long road ahead of us. We had to cancel our wedding one month before the date and the next two years involved other surgeries and many, many cycles of chemotherapy. During that entire time, my MIL and I held each other up, gave each other strength and bonded over our mutual love for the same person. Although I never ever would have wanted those two years to have taken place, it created a very special relationship between myself and my in-laws and I am extremely grateful for that.

BTW - we were finally able to get married 3 years after our original date and let me tell you those words "in sickness and in health" had a lot of meaning!

Una - hubby only knows what Bakelite is because I go on and on about it all the time - he couldn't forget if he tried!

Shannon you are a real angel and apparently your MIL is too! DH is one lucky guy, and it is clear he knows it. And the new bag is gorgeous - I am so happy for you!

  • Jem replied 11 years ago

I love that story about your in-laws (although am sorry you all had to go through the bad part). It's wonderful that it made you close instead of push you apart. And I LOVE your purse. It's perfect for you and such a thoughtful gift!

  • jayne replied 11 years ago

You so deserve this. YOu are one special person Shannon!

  • replied 11 years ago

Touching bit of history you shared, that gift is so much more than just a handbag with all the thought and love that went into it.

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

What a touching story you shared. I am so glad that your husband is OK now and that you have such a close relationship with your MIL. She and your husband are real sweeties! Cool purse!

  • ramya replied 11 years ago

Shannon a touching story... It is amazing that you both forged a strong bond... And such a cute gift...

  • Ornella replied 11 years ago

You are lucky Shannon, for many reasons. Over the last weeks and months I have only managed to put together a few pieces of your changes involving MIL, but enough to tell me you have a lovely, wise woman nearer to you which in itself is a gift when two people take care of balancing their individual and mutual time and needs, which you two seem to have nailed down. Wow!

Gorgeous handbag and how wonderful that she knows and appreciates your taste so much.

    p.s.
I hope we'll meet her some day too ;-)

You are one lucky lady and they are very fortunate to have you! I honestly feel a little bit teary reading your post.

  • KathyL replied 11 years ago

Such a touching story. Your MIL sounds a lot like mine. I know how lucky you must feel to have someone like that in your life. Beautiful purse. Your dh and mil did good :)

  • Marley replied 11 years ago

Oh my - I was just reading your other thread about using vintage or not (I say USE) - and I saw that you referred to another of your threads and so I went hunting for it, found it, read it - and now I'm in a puddle of tears - GOOD tears! Thank you for sharing! I think the 3 of you - MIL, DH and you - all sound like very special people.

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

Shannon, what a beautiful bag. Grey patent leather? Swoon-o-rama. Can't wait to see how you work it into your beautiful wardrobe. Love the story about your great family too, thanks for sharing.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Shannon, I only now saw your story about your early life with DH and MIL. It made me want to cry. Not only that, but I feel as if your husband is even MORE deserving of the YLF husband of the year award!!
