WIW: Black Watch trousers

Got my black watch trousers back from hemming and busting them out! I went for a very simple pairing today with a fluid black knit top with scrunched sleeves, my black patent Ara booties, black leather hobo-style handbag and when I head out the door, my ancient black quilted jacket.

Love these trousers…BUT…I think I may have bought them one size too large. I wanted a fluid fit but as I'm walking around this morning, I'm constantly tugging them up and because of the leather yoke, there are no belt loops so I can wear a belt. Yikes! I'm actually thinking of nipping to The Bay at lunch time to see if they have the size smaller. At the very good sale price, it would be worthwhile. This is a lesson to myself (and others) to try on more than one size - I just grabbed this size and put them on and went "yep, that's the slouchy type of fit I'm after". But I'm not entirely sure of my size these days and didn't even try on the size smaller :(

Anyway, what do you think of the outfit? Do the trousers look too big to you? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Sweater: Sears
Trousers: Lord & Taylor
Booties: Ara
Handbag: Christopher Kon (thrifted)
Jacket: Nygard
Watch: Fossil

They are so great. I am super tempted to get a pair myself! They do look like they may be a touch big, Shannon.

You're so right!(trying one size up and down, too-it happened to me sOOo many times-- to fit better in those!)

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

I love this outfit and like the look of the size on you, but it's not good to always be pulling them up. A size down sounds like a good idea.

Gorgeous.  I don't remember seeing that jacket before and think I would have remembered it.  It is beautiful and the details make the outfit I think.  I love all the texture and sheen in black.

I hope the trouser issue is sorted soon because you look absolutely fab in this.

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I really like them - and I like my trousers to fit like this.  (That said, since you're losing weight, it might be worth trying the size down too).

A great outfit and I love those trousers. If your after a slouchy look....perfect but they have to be comfy. Nothing worse than your pants falling down :)
Maybe try a smaller size and see how they feel.

The trousers look great from here :-) but I agree with amiable...if you are still losing weight you may want to size down. Love the whole outfit, especially that jacket.

Great trousers -- I am a sucker for Black Watch! I say go and try the trousers in the size down -- if they are bugging you, you won't love them enough.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

They look great from here but definitely try the smaller size and see what you think. Love them with the slouchy tuck!

  • Tanya replied 10 years ago

I would definitely try the smaller size Shannon and see how you like it.  Love those trousers and the outfit is great.

I so hear you on trouser sizes Shannon. I do it too a LOT now a days!!!
So much that DH has banned me from buying trousers until my size has stabelized.
I hope this get resolved for you coz you look awesome.
    P.S.: Gret a smaller size

You know what Shannon ........ you just made me realize something!  I bought a pair of plaid trousers yesterday from Next and they seem a bit loose and they don't have belt loops too.  I too wanted a slouchy fit.  AND I never tried the smaller size :-O  Thank you!

You should deftly try the smaller size if it's bothering you.  And you look lovely today :)

Gosh Shannon, you look stunning in Black Watch tartan which is my favorite.  I hope you get the sizes sorted to your satisfaction but from the looks end they just look divine on you!!

I was just talking to a lady at work who is quite the excellent seamstress. She pointed out that the leather yoke has a seam on each side so it would be quite easy and inexpensive to have the waist taken in if need be. It is actually just the waist that is too big which is causing the trousers to slide down which in turn, makes them a wee bit too slouchy all over. When I pull the trousers up to my waist for a proper fit, everything looks better.

I'm still going to go and try on the smaller size but if those are not available or are too snug in the butt area, then I can have these ones taken in at the waist a bit. All is not lost :)

I do absolutely love the feel of the fabric and the plaid pattern though.

    Thanks everyone!

Oh, good. It sounds like a little waist alteration will do the trick.
I'm so glad, because I LOVE this outfit on you!

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

Shannon, this outfit is perfection!  To my eye the fit of the trousers is modern and fluid.  Isn't it frustrating when things don't fit as well in motion as they seem to when you try them on... I hope you find a comfortable solution to the waist slippage.

  • JAileen replied 10 years ago

I hope you can get the fit fine tuned to your satisfaction because these look great on you. I love love love them!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Such an amazing find, Shannon!  I agree that you must have the right fit -- either through alterations or a smaller pair.  Still, your happiness factor seems high, and they look amazing!

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

Well, I love the looks of these but if they are falling off then obviously you have to fix the problem.  I was going to say maybe you could add some belt loops but actually I think a belt might compete with the leather waist detail or hide it which would be a shame.

I haven't worn my black watch pants yet this season as they are a bit too warm for right now (since they're essentially flannel) but now you're making me want to pull them out anyway.

  • Amy replied 10 years ago

Looks nice, Shannon! Can you just have a couple of darts added to the back at the waistband to make them a bit snugger?

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

11 out of 10. My type of outfit.

By all means try a smaller size.

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Well, you inspired me today - this is a 100% win in my book!

  • Vickie KY replied 10 years ago

YLF> IT sounds like you have solved your fit problem. That is good as the outfit looks really nice.

I think the waist alteration will do the trick! It is gorgeous, Shannon, and I love the entire outfit. That jacket is so fab, too!

  • Sona replied 10 years ago

I love the trousers and sweater but not loving the quilted jacket. I think the outfit itself has a very modern vibe to it and the fur on the jacket makes it a tad dated with the other elements? I'm also thinking an oversized clutch may work better than the hobo.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Amy - unfortunately because of the leather yoke on the trousers, I can't do any darts at the back because the leather is all one piece on the back. However, the two side seams could be taken in and that seam includes the leather so would be easier to do.

I did buy the smaller pair (also came in petite) and am going to try them on again at home and see what I think. In my ideal world, my trousers would be between the two sizes - some fluidity but not too much. I do love fluid and slouchy but these have bagged out even more throughout the day (darn that 2% spandex!) and I'm feeling quite sloppy :(

So will wear the smaller size around the house a bit this evening and see if they bag out the same way and then make a decision to either buy the smaller pair or have these altered.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

    Cross posted Sona - lol!

I was wondering about the jacket. It is at least 8 years old. It has certainly done its time and I have no problem giving it the heave-ho. And a clutch is a great idea - thanks :)

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Love your stylings and the pants look great, but only you can tell how they really "feel" on you. I tried on trousers yesterday at Club Monaco and thought they fit perfectly--except for being a teensy snug at the waist. Well I went up one size and voila-- much better fit so that's what I went for. I wanted slouch too.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous.  The epitome of style :)
