Which ones?

Yesterday I posted a thread about cigarette pants http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....hem-length and ended the discussion knowing I wanted a pair of slim, black trousers, in a non petite length so I could have a bit of scrunch. These have the potential to be a real workhorse item in my fall/winter wardrobe.

MaryK just posted that Gap/BR/ON have a 25% off sale this weekend (thanks MaryK!) and there are two trousers I'm interested in: Gap real skinny and BR Martin fit skinny. The Gap ones are on sale plus the discount but only in the regular cropped length. Although I don't want cropped because they are "regular" and not petite, trust me, they will NOT be cropped on me!

I know that Suz mentioned the Gap real skinny trousers collect lint like crazy and I have two light coloured cats - might not be a good match.

Anyway - over to you. Whiches ones to order:

Yay = Gap real skinny
Nay = BR Martin skinny

    I've been wanting to try the BR martins myself. I vote nay!

    Thanks Zap - the Martins are the ones I was leaning towards too so went ahead and ordered to try. I'm going to leave the Gap ones for now.

    Are you ordering or do you have a chance to shop in store? If ordering, can you get both to try and then return the ones that don't work or is this just way too much hassle?

    I have the GAP Really Skinny - not sure about the lint collecting aspect because I have a black lab - so I wouldn't really be able to tell anyway :)

    Have not tried the BR Martins yet, though they are next on my list. Just one thing about the Really Skinnies from the GAP - I don't know if it's just me or what, but they don't really scrunch on me that much...in fact, they are *really* skinny on my calves, which makes them perfect for tucking into tall boots. I'm not certain I'd be able to get that cigarette pant-like scrunch at the bottom that Angie likes with these. On me, the GAP skinny pants are almost like leggings on my calves. I think I have fairly average-ish to slightly larger calves at 14.5" to 15" around.

    I think if I try the GAP Really Skinnies as a 'cigarette' pant, and want that scrunch, I'm likely to size up - not sure if that would make the difference between them looking like leans/leggings versus cigarette pants with a tiny bit of nice scrunch.

    Looking forward to hearing what you decide and what works for you.

    Thanks VC! I'm ordering online because there's a sale on plus I find both stores have my size available online and not as often in the store. I can definitely order both and return whatever doesn't work. But then I remembered trying the Gap skinny jeans and they were just WAY too tight on my calves and that's not what I'm looking for. So will try the Martins and hope for the best - otherwise, will just keep on looking.

    Shannon, it's been a while but I ordered a pair of slim black pants from BR last year and I LOVE them. I can't remember the model but I thought Angie might have recommended them back then. They do collect a little lint from things like white cotton napkins in restaurants but not so much as to be a problem. They are the most comfortable dress pants I have ever worn.

  • Debbie replied 11 years ago

    Shannon I have both and I highly recommend the Martin's. For me they are holding up much better. I have had both pairs for approximately the same amount of time and I am going to replace the Gap ones but the Martin's look brand new.

    Shannon if neither of those work, I got a pair of slim black pants at the Jones Store a while back. On me they are good with flats but I have a 33" inseam. They would have scrunch on you. I haven't been at the store for a while but they may still have them or a newer version. I am on their mailing list and think I saw something like that at the store.

    Thanks text style and debbie for the info on the Martins. They sound like good pants!

    Dianthus - how come I never remember Jones??? Thanks - that's where I'm going to check out white button down shirts too. Should we plan another shopping day???

    Would love to do another shop together. Let me know how your schedule looks for the next few weeks.

    Will PM you - sounds like a date!

    Shannon;
    What about the Gap True Straights? They are more of a cigarette width. They can collect lint, however. Unlike the Martins (I think), the Gap skinnies and straights are machine washable, but they shrink in length and a bit in width. I think my daughter's shrunk by a full size or more. I haven't worn/washed my straights enough to notice.

    OK, I'm really hesitating to admit this, but I actually bought a pair of slim-leg black pants from *hushed tones* Talbots-- hey, in my defense, Angie said "leave no retail stone unturned".

    I tried on the BR Martins and both Gap pants but got turned off by the fabric. The fit, too, was just so-so. I was getting ready to leave the mall when I saw that red door and thought "what the heck". Told the saleswoman what I was looking for and she steered me right to a couple of racks of cigarette legged pants. I had to size down, but the pants fit perfectly and were exactly what I wanted.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

    Thanks for your input Donna - Gap is sounding less and less like an ideal choice.

    No need to be ashamed of Talbots Gaylene - I really like some of their stuff! Unfortunately no brick and mortar store here but I think they deliver to Canada. I'll have a look at the website and see what's what. Thanks for the tip!

    Shannon, I have Martins from last year and they fit me better than Gap ones, which I tried on too. However a lot of gals here have Gap trousers (Angie included) so it may depend on your body type.
    I like Martins with one exception: they need to be dry clean. I ignored that and washed my grey pair. After 2 washes it shrank and now fits me almost like leggings! :-)
    So I bite the bullet and dry clean my black pair. That may be a favor towards Gap pants as they are washable.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

    Thanks Sveta - I read that in the product description and did kind of say "oh poop".

  • replied 11 years ago

    I have the Gap Really Skinny and two cats (one longhaired orange and white and one shorthaired brown tabby) and I haven't noticed the pants to be any worse than my other black/dark ones for attracting and displaying cat hair.

    I refuse dry cleaning so that ruled out the Martins for me.

    I voted nay just because I came across a pair at the flea market and they were really thin IMO, and I'll only end up wearing them as legging alternatives. Of course I have no idea how many seasons ago my version is from...

    ETA: I should have said I came across the Real Skinnies. Those are the ones I thought were thin. Voted for the Martins.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

    Hmmm....some negative info coming through about the Martins...well good thing is I can return them to the brick and mortar store (now that we have one!) if they don't work out.

    Appreciate all your feedback!

    Don't get me wrong Shannon, I *love* my GAP Really Skinny pants, it's just that they aren't all that 'scrunch-able' in my regular size on me. Pretty skinny-ish, if you know what I mean. Perfect for all kinds of other looks, such as tucking into tall boots and the like, but on me, I wouldn't call them 'cigarette pants' which I'm thinking are ultra-sleek and slim, but *not* true skinny pants.

    On me, there is no getting the GAP Really Skinny pants over a pair of booties, no matter how sleek the booties might be. Uh uh..not happening. Just for the the record, I wear anything from an 8-12 these days, and in my experience, I'm not going to get that teensy bit of scrunch/slouch at the bottom of the ankle with the Really Skinny pants from GAP.

    Meanwhile, I'm interested and intrigued by what Gaylene has said about Talbot's having some nice cigarette pants - and I agree with the "leave no retail stone unturned" mantra. I'm also very curious about the BR Martins which I have heard a lot of good things about here at YLF over the years.

    Good luck and I can't wait to hear your review(s) or report back on what worked or didn't work.

    I just walked out the Gap with a pair of black Real Skinnies. It has two way stretch and hugs the curves very well. The leg below the knee is not clingy either - it has a very flattering fit. The waistline is very very comfortable on the squishy belly like mine.

    I'm not sure what your body type is but i have thicker thighs and smaller yet muscular calves. I LOVE it. I have yet to wear it for a full day but back in the dressing room, it looked amazing! So...YAAAAAY!

    I will try the BR next time and let you know ;)
