WIW: Shorts to the office

Today's outfit started with my new EF black silk shorts. We're allowed to wear dressy shorts to the office on Fridays so I'm taking advantage.

I love these shorts as they are a silk blend that just feels amazing against the skin and they move so beautifully when you stride. They are also a longer length and have some fullness so they almost act like culottes.

I added a black leather belt and then tucked my cream silk EF tee. On top of that, I've added my black crepe EF drapery vest. I prefer the vest with a sleeveless top but didn't have one that worked here.

Now this outfit is a fair bit of drape and fluidity so I've added some structure with my nude peep toe booties and snakeskin handbag. As well, my bare arms and legs provide some structure.

Gold watch, red specs and red lip finish off the outfit.

The shorts and tee were purchased on our recent vacation and have already proven to be indispensable wardrobe workhorses.

As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

I love those shorts! They sound divine. YLF!

I am SO glad to see you back posting and hope it is a sign that life is back on track.

I see what you mean about a lot of drape but the belt adds the needed structure to my eye.  I really like this on you and can see you wearing an iteration of it with booties and a long sleeve top for fall.

Those shorts are a wonderful length and make an casually elegant outfit.

They are really as a elegant as a skirt - I would totally wear them to the office!

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

    Looks great - modern suit!

Thank you ladies! It's interesting you all used the word "elegant" because that's exactly how I felt about these shorts when I tried them on. They really act like a skirt as Daria pointed out. I've also worn them a number of times with a semi-tucked tank and flat black sandals for weekend running around.

That is a fab shorts outfit for work - You nailed how shorts to work should  be done.

What fabulous shorts, Shannon! They look great. I really enjoy my Zara draped sarong shorts; they've been a really good addition to the closet for those days when you want to look a bit elegant yet still need to move and bend a lot. I expect these will fill a similar role for you.

So great to see you post, my friend. I hope the world is looking a bit better and life is settling a little.

You do look elegant in those shorts. I love the way you detailed the construction of the outfit, as always there is the exact amount of drape and structure.
    Glad to see you around.

I love this look. I call it polished casual. A nice look to celebrate a summer Friday. Side story: last year when I still worked in an office setting, a co-worker who frequently worked taking PBS programming to pre-school kids, so she was on the floor a lot, wore a comparable shorts outfit to the office. the shorts were knee length, olive linen and she wore a crooped jacket over it. A VP, known for being a sexist jerk and pretty much universally despised by all women in the org, made a snotty comment at a meeting to the effect of "I would appreciate you not wearing play clothes to the office." That comment raced through the building, and the next day probably half the women there, including me, wore some version of professional shorts to the office in solidarity. The female HR director also chatted him up for his inappropriate comments.

Drapey shorts are so good to have - I'd love a pair myself. This is a really nice work outfit for any day of the week, as it doesn't scream "shorts" at all!  Looks very nice on you .

Nice!  I've never worked in an office where shorts (of any type) were acceptable.  I really wish I could wear something similar when it's as hot as it's been lately.

    Elegant-chic-arty-minimalist. Very cool look, Shannon.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

Suz - that's it exactly! There are times you need to be able to move around and a skirt will end in some sort of wardrobe malfunction! These type of drapey shorts ensure everything remains covered but can act like a skirt.

Nebraskim - love your story about the "shorts rebellion"!

Mochi - how nice to hear from you  :) "Elegant-chic-arty-minimalist" - I really need to chew on that comment. I think this is actually the direction my style has been taking for the last 6 months and I'm really enjoying it.

Thanks all for your kind words and to Cheryle and Suz - yes, life seems to be returning to a semblance of normalcy and all is well :)

Elegant and chic! I love those shorts. There is nothing casual about this outfit, yet it's relaxed and stylish. You rock the 'shorts to office' look, Shannon!

I am glad to hear life's starting to feel a tad normal for you guys. I love and hugely admire your dedication towards fashion and documenting your outfits even when things might stil feel crazy sometimes. You're fabulous....in every way possible....and an inspiration to me

So lovely to see you Shannon. What a gorgeous outfit! The new shorts and vest look great together, like a lovely casual suit. I agree with others who've said this is an elegant look. Lovely!

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

FABULOUS. The nude shoe makes the look. Elegant and chic.

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

Great soft shorts, love the length. I bet they are wonderful in motion! Was there enough texture difference for you in this outfit Shannon? From the photos the tee and shorts have a similar texture, which if true, would probably make the vibe function more like a dress or jumpsuit. Really like the nude footwear here, adds to the softness in a very nice way.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 8 years ago

I was going to say the exact same thing as Angie ... Something about that nude shoe is really wonderful.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

Maneera - your thoughtful words touch my heart :)

Diane - it does sort of work like a casual summer suit, doesn't it?

Angie - thank you :) and I've decided I must always have a pair of nude spring/summer shoes in my wardrobe. Remember the peep toe lace less oxfords we both had in that neutral taupe shade? Those shoes convinced me that a nude/taupe shoe in warm months is incredibly versatile.

Aida - you've got such a keen eye for detail. Yes, the tee and shorts are very similar in texture so together almost feel like one piece . But then the vest breaks up that "smoothness" by having a slightly nubby texture.

Ummlila - the outfit would feel too heavy with a black shoe, don't you think?
