WIW: new combination for older items

I have a bit of a challenge for myself this month (thanks for the challenge push Carter!) to wear older wardrobe items in new combinations. My wardrobe isn't huge my any means and I tend to get stuck on wearing things the same way which then makes me feel like my wardrobe is even smaller. Need to get more creative!

Today's outfit started with my cobalt pencil skirt that's going on 3 (or is it 4?) years old. I paired it with a cobalt tank. I bought 4 Lord & Taylor tanks early in the summer in black, white, lilac and cobalt and they have been indispensable layering pieces.

On top of that, I popped on my black blouse thingy. I like how enough of the cobalt tank shows so it looks like I have a cobalt dress underneath.

I chose my quilted black/cream/cobalt handbag and then my black Naot cross strap shoes to finish off the outfit.

As always, all thoughts/comments/suggestions for improvement welcome.

I was sorry when the cobalt/black combo was done too much in the 80s or 90s and became a fashion no and am thrilled that it is back again.  I love repetition and cohesion in an outfit and in this case, the bag perfectly mimics the elements in the outfit.  Blue is definitely your best color Shannon.  I am thinking of using your outfit as inspiration either today or tomorrow but may not have time to think it through.

    Fab all around.

Love the combo.  Colorblocking seems pretty modern to me.  You look great.

Great outfit. Cool how it looks like sheath dress.

Love the combination and inspired use of the black thingy!

I always love seeing this skirt and great personal challenge. I adore your black blouse thingy, it's a very cool item.

Love the black thingie, I'm not sure I've seen that before. (?).  This looks comfortable and pulled together... the perfect combo.

Cheryle I'm horrified at the mere thought of black and cobalt being a fashion "no".  Eek, I'd be naked!

Well done! Love that the bit of visible tank makes this look like a dress...very wardrobe-expanding. I'm sure you can make a dress (or a jumpsuit) with your black tank. What about the white and lilac tanks?

Thanks ladies :) I'm hoping my personal challenge will restart my fashion mojo - I feel I've been a bit uninspired the last few months.

Black and cobalt out??? Like Elizabeth, I would have been lost. It's one of my favorite color combinations.

This blouse thingy is so bizarre - some days I love it and other days, it's too floppy and drives me crazy. Ha - we are fickle beasts aren't we? :)

Carter - the white tank could combine with my white capri pants or white jeans for a column of color but alas, the lilac tank is a stand alone item.

Cobalt looks so good on you. ( What do you all mean about cobalt and black being a no no ??? Please don't tell.me so )
The black thingy looks perfect with the outfit , it gives it movement and a certain artistic flair.
I too get stuck in the same combinations , especially in our long winters.
Looking forward to see how you work your closet.

I love black and cobalt, and the thingy looks really versatile. I still have no cobalt. I need some cobalt. I like your new picture place.

Looks good!  I really like how the tank and skirt look like they could be a dress.  It makes the outfit look streamlined even with the drapey blouse.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

Sounds like we have a lot of cobalt lovers here :)

Celia - it's so easy to get in a rut with combos isn't it?

donnat - I think this new pic location is a bit better since there's more light (although my kitchen light is almost making it too bright!).

Sara - I love it when two items purchased years apart end up being the same color. Such a happy coincidence.

A NEW combination of old colours ALWAYS makes me happy. And your rendition is fabulous. I like your August challenge. Rock on.

Cobalt and black is one of my favourite colour combinations.....it's rich, luxurious, dressy and oh-so-drool-worthy!

Love your outfit! It's GORGEOUS! The handbag is a brilliant addition. You look smashing as always, Shannon!

Very nice! Love the long line created by the cobalt pieces, and the black adds great movement and drape.

  • Suz replied 8 years ago

Fabulous, Shannon! I like the column of colour and I do think that great skirt might have been serving you well for 4 seasons. Brilliant!
