WIW: Neutrals & Flats

It's going to be super hot again today - I don't know about you, but I'm now tired of the heat.

Anyway on to the outfit: I started out with my black clams and then added my navy/cream polka dot dolman sleeve waistband blouse. Because the outfit has a lack of colour, I wanted to make it still visually interesting with pattern and texture so am using the snakeskin handbag again and my black/cream quilted leather flats. For jewelry, I've popped on my gold mesh cuff.

Does this work? Do the textures and pattern mixing make the outfit interesting or is the lack of colour just boring? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Blouse: Winner's
Clams: Reitmans
Shoes: Shelly London (thrifted)
Handbag: Elliot Lucca
Cuff: Michael Kors

Shannon, this outfit is anything but boring! Good grief, it is perfect!
The only thing I would change is to have the cami on top of the clams to prevent the "grinning".
We have 24C today - a welcome break for sure!

    It's perfect!

As captain of Team Neutrals, I will say -- not boring at all. Color is merely one way to create interest, not the only way. Well done you!

I like Sveta's suggestion too: better to have a little bit of cami showing below the top than to have pants showing beneath the top.

We have 23C too -- although 12C right now, as I rode in this morning there was frost smoke on the river :)

I love the sheer top over a more fitted bottom. I think too that the way the top folds it shows a line across your lower waist, but I don't know how you would fix that. Does the top have an elastic waistband that blouses over?

    Tick :)

Thanks ladies - FYI this top has a sewn in "under shirt" similar to a cami but sticked to the elastic waistband, side seams, shoulders and neckline so I'm not able to pull it down or anything. The "flounce" part of the blouse is the only part that does not have the under shirt attached. The only way to completely prevent the grinning would be to add another cami under this blouse and that would just be too hot.

Ok I see it now -- I think it is part of the look then :)

Yeah, I have one like that too. A non-removable cami stitched to a crocheted top, but the cami is a lot shorter than the top.

Not sure why manufacturers do that.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I think with this one April the cami stitched to the flounce part of the blouse would make it too heavy and not "floaty" enough, if that makes any sense.

I'm Team Neutral and I LOVE this look! Perfection. You could wear this anywhere and look sophisticated and appropriate.

I might have to copy. :)

I think the neutral colour palette is great. I do love colour, but variety is the spice of life. It's like a break from hot, sunny weather - it goes down really well sometimes. And you've pulled it off very well.

If the cami is built-in and invariable, the other possibility to prevent "grinning" would be to wear this top over light-coloured bottoms, if you have any. It's not that this outfit is bad, not at all, but it's an 8 or 9 as opposed to a 10, because of that issue. You still look great.

I agree with the others - nothing boring at all - I love the pattern mixing you've done here, perfect! You could certainly try white pants as another option but I like it.

Well, you *look* fresh as can be! But I hear you; I am tired of the heat, too! Where is our leather jacket weather??

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

    I love this!!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Totally works. You look fresh and graphic!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

And I've recovered from seeing your vintage bag. I can't respond on that thread in fear of fainting again.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Rae - exactly! Leather jackets and boots...PLEASE!

Angie - so glad you've recovered. You had me scared last night (lol)!

Gorgeous, it most definitely works! Those clams are the perfect length for you. I'm glad you kept this top, it's both soft and dramatic.
