WIW: Leather Love (ETA styling question)

What better way to make a gal feel good then to wrap herself in some leather love? This is the mauve leather jacket my husband bought me for my birthday last year. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't worn it very much this year and when I put it on this morning, I wondered why 'cause I still love it.

I've popped the jacket overtop of my asymmetrical ruched tank and added my tweed front slouchy trousers for bottoms. My Doc Marcie boots are my footwear of choice today and my black/white handbag rounds out the outfit.

I'm wondering if a different handbag would have been better with this? I'm also wondering if this leather jacket would look good with white jeans? Any and all comments/suggestions welcome.

Jacket: Danier Leather
Tank: Attitude by Jay Manuel
Trousers: Jessica (Sears brand)
Boots: Doc Martens
Handbag: Danier Leather (thrifted)

ETA: Since I'm going to hold off on some shopping for now and I have rediscovered my love of this jacket, would totally appreciate styling suggestions on how to transition this jacket into spring. Because it is a fairly distinct colour and has an interesting collar and alot of detail, I have trouble figuring out what colour tops to wear under it. Would love your help!

Yummy leather jacket! You look like a rocker! I like the way you put the outfit together, but it would be even more freaking awesome with the Fossil bag (with the matching maroon stripe) and leopard shoes from your previous WIW! And maybe some skinny black pants instead of the grey trousers?

I am loving the leather! Very nice outfit :) I havent had much time to YLF with company here but I hope you are feeling less frustrated. You look great!

This is a great jacket, and I bet it would work well with white jeans. I like my dark green leather with white jeans and I see a similar light/dark contrast here. I think you could use a different bag for a different look. The ladylike polish of the black and white and the slight rockerness of the jacket works to my eye. I thikn you could give the outfit a different feel by using a more slouchy bag like your tan one or I think your snakeskin clutch would be very nice too. Not better, just different IFKYIM?

  • replied 11 years ago

Hmm, the fact that you meantioned the handbag sounds like you were a little unsure. It's not bad but I think I would like to see the outfit with another. There is just something, maybe the outfit has a slight rugged vibe and that bag has a more classic refined feel. All that said though I still love the way you look. Not sure about white jeans with the jacket, see what the others say. You should definitely wear the jacket more!

  • replied 11 years ago

This is really nice. The color palette is subtle with some great texture in the trousers. I like the bag with it, and I think white jeans would switch in perfectly when it's warm/dry enough to wear them. Nice!

Beautiful jacket, your hubby has good taste! It looks very versatile, you could wear it with just about anything. I like how you've styled it here, the slouchy trousers are fab and the fit looks great.

  • replied 11 years ago

I think it would look great with white jeans!

I think your Fossil bag would match the jacket vibe better too. I do like the Marcies with those trousers.

Wha would that jacket look like layered over your Nygard cardi?

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

I thought exactly what Ceit did! Fossil bag! If you want matchy, of course. I like the bag ;you have very well and it picks up the colors in those fab trousers.

    Looks cozy and rich.

  • Raisin replied 11 years ago

I love the outfit, because I do like subdued colors. The tux stripe is fab too, I have a pair of pants like those and love them. I'm used to seeing you with more color, so for a bag I thought a punch of color could go nicely. I think you could almost do any color with this.

  • replied 11 years ago

I happen to love the bag with the outfit, the jacket is burgundy not cognac, right? The trousers look amazing, so are the marcies, ylf! the black bag is restrained, it gives such a nice, editorial quality to the entire shebang, IMO.

I think the white jeans would definitely work.

  • Thistle replied 11 years ago

Scrumptious jacket! That totally should be on your body more often.

White would also work very well, but will be higher contrast and give a different vibe. I think it would ok smashin, just be different.

I am terrible with accessories, and I struggle with them personally, so I would listen to the other ladies.

  • Jaime replied 11 years ago

I love those trousers every way you wear them including this! I thing the bag looks good here and would love to see the jacket with white jeans!

  • Glory replied 11 years ago

Love love this jacket on you!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 11 years ago

You look fab as always. I love the bag too. They are currently selling one that is very much like yours in black, red, green, and possibly a few other colors.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'll check the Fossil handbag with the jacket and see how it works - I think Zap might be right though. The jacket is definitely burgundy not cognac so it may not quite work. But will absolutely give it a bash. Sarah - I was wondering about the snakeskin clutch too so will see about that.

Natalie - ooohhhhh...I do like the suggestion of the animal print shoes with this jacket. Will definitely give that a go and maybe with my slim cigarette pants. Love it!

You guys are the BEST - these suggestions are totally helpful and give me new ways to wear this jacket.

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

When in doubt, I always go back to my basics. you can always pop stripes, polka dots or an animal print under the jacket. Also, your b/w graphic print dresses can go under it too. Great job shopping your own closet. There's always going to be some fab new thing in the stores that demands our attention but let's enjoy the things we already have and love!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

With the jacket - white jeans (or any white bottom) would certainly work, I think, if you got the other pieces right (i.e. a lighter shoe option as well). Mauve can look stunning with navy (and, I would think, with denim). Day Vies had a great mauve post a while back...maybe look it up?

It CAN be a tricky colour to work with, I agree. Have you tried with with yellow or mustard? How about greens? Anything from mint to sage? Or even chartreuse? Or greys? Charcoal to light silvery grey. Or how about TAUPE? Does it work with the portobello skirt? It might be off, I know...there is a similarity in tone and it could clash a bit, but you never know until you try!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Rita & Suz - thank you so much for your suggestions - many of which I had never thought of. Especially excited to try the jacket over the b/w Maggy London dress and the portobello skirt. Going to play in my closet this weekend!

  • Inge replied 11 years ago

A fabulous look, Shannon, and I love all the extra suggestions too. I'm so glad you are re-discovering this beautiful jacket, because it's gorgeous on you!

To transition into Spring: I have the feeling that a lot of colour combos will work, especially if you throw cream and/or white into the mix.

Here are a few visuals: it's more about the colour combos than the actual pieces + most of them are not the exact same shade of purple as your jacket, but I think the colours will still work with your fab jacket.

    - white + ink blue/navy

    - light or mid-greys + white or cream accents

    - citron / chartreuse / soft yellow + light-wash denim

I'm also thinking of: mint, lavender, teal, bright and mid-greens, or maybe even turquoise...

  • Tina.b replied 11 years ago

What a beautiful jacket, I do hope you wear it more often! I really like it with the dark neutrals, you look very sleek. Lots of great colour pair suggestions above. I'm going to have to study the list, that is my great weakness in fashion, I never have any idea what colours go!

  • harmonica replied 11 years ago

you've got great input - i just wanted to say you look fab as always! gorgeous jacket!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

Well, this is just so you and so beautiful! Rich, warm colors and textures. LOVE. I'd say just wear this baby with lighter colors and fabrics come spring - you can wear this anytime, temps considered.

  • RoseandJoan replied 11 years ago

Honestly Shannon, you look gorgeous and I would wear the whole shebang in a heartbeat. Also, what I know about colour theory could be written on a postage stamp but with regards to the jacket I think soft autumn shades would coordinate superbly.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Tsk tsk for not bringing that beauty out to play this year! So fun with gray, and I can soooo see it with yellow/citron for this S/S's leather trend. I remember the day you got that jacket - it was a fab story!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Oooh. Trust Inge to give us the links!!

  • Inge replied 11 years ago

    :-)

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Loving your leather love, Shannon! I have been wondering about that jacket and am thrilled to see it come out to play again.

An 11 out of 10. Fab juxtaposition with your amazing tux trousers!!

  • Day Vies replied 11 years ago

Yeah, where has that darling little gem been? I love it with the trousers and the plain black top. This is Fabulous (with a capital F).

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Inge - you are AMAZING! Going to study each and every one of these outfits. Thank you so much!

Please know I have not fallen out of love with this jacket - quite the contrary. But I had taken it to be professionally cleaned and when I got it back put it in the hallway closet instead of my bedroom closet and forgot I put it there - not too bright - lol!

Thanks Tina, Harmonica, Una, Julie, Rae, Angie & Day Vies! Can I be piggy and ask one more question? Are there any specific necklines that I should avoid as they won't work with the Mandarin collar of the jacket?

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You might find a collared shirt or blouse a little more problematic with a mandarin collared topper - although that does not stop me from wearing the combination. I button all the way to the top, or pop the collar.

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

That jacket is so supple and pretty looking, I want to touch it! I love, love, love this jacket. And yes I think give it a go with white. Also it would look fab with grey.

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Nothing to add except the jacket looks great on you & I'd love to see it with denim.
    Inge you are amazing:)

  • Aida replied 11 years ago

Perfectly styled Shannon! I adore those trousers every time I see them, sooooo good :D :D As for SPRING styling ideas for that luscious moto:

    - in a column of white!
    - paired with tonal pastels (blush, pink, cream)
    - paired with opposite pastels (pale yellow, pale blue)
    - paired with something metallic
    - printed casual top + faded denim + natural sandals
    - fully buttoned-up sheer blouse + cami + slim bottoms
    - in a pattern party, if you're not tired out of that
    - printed pants would be fun

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

Shannon, I love this outfit, and the jacket is just divine with its lovely shoulder shooters (don't know what to call those zing tips at the shoulders but they are nifty)!

I love mauve with chartreuse, or I saw a website describe the color as "Bosc pear". Here it is shown with a lot of white.

Also, a lovely sky blue looks great with mauve, and add a touch of butter yellow for a springtime trio of soft primary colors. Faded blue jeans could do the trick for the soft blue.

It's fun to suggest these, and I love to play with colors!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Great suggestions ladies - thank you so, so much!

Julie - I WANT that room!
