WIW: Dressing for the Cold

Today is supposed to be our coldest day of the year so far... -42 C with windchill. So comfort and warmth are paramount in today's outfit.

I started with this loose turtleneck striped sweater in cream and black, paired with my slouchy skinny jeans and a simple black belt with gunmetal buckle. For indoor footwear, I'll be wearing my python booties. For some additional texture and shine, I'm using my patent croc leather handbag with the big gunmetal clasp.

I have a question - is the outfit better with the sweater partially tucked (pics 1 and 2) or untucked (pic 3)?

BTW - when I step outside I will be wearing my jeans tucked into my Sorel boots, have on my knee length LE down coat, wooly scarf and wooly Thinsulate mitts.

What do you think? Does this work together? How are the proportions? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Sweater: Pria (thrifted)
Jeans: River Canyon Blues
Belt: Danier Leather
Boots: Sam Edelman
Handbag: Danier Leather (thrifted)

I normally read YLF when waiting for the bus but it was too cold to take my gloves off this morning!

Shannon, this looks so nice for a Friday. I hope this week hasn't been as bad as you feared it would be.

    I like the semi-tuck!

I like this look on you. I vote for semi tuck too! Love how the booties pick up on the cream in your sweater as well. Bet your glad this week is over eh? Have a nice glass of vino this evening :)

I prefer the semi tuck to, the untucked version seems much more casual.

    Sorry, double post, "stupid" computer!

    Semi tuck!!

    And stay warm, beautiful Shannon!

It is cold again here, too. Brrrr!!!

I'm still a sucker for semi -tuck (sporting it myself today too), but both look good. Keep warm - you look toasty and stylish!

Great look! I should try something like this (but I would have to find some BF jeans first). I like the semi tuck version best. I think you look very warm and comfortable for such a cold day.

  • Isabel replied 11 years ago

Yes, semi tuck. You look amazing...but your post make me think of brrrrrrrrrrr...no matter what.

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Semi-tuck to the top! It has just that extra bit of sass.

Loving the texture that the accessories --- and your hair! --- add to the simple, modern, graphic effect of the jeans and sweater.

Love this with the semi tuck, contrasts the strong horizontals of the sweater and gives you the perfect proportions. You've really illustrated to me how to wear stripes effectively and I've been breaking them out way more often! Love how you've accessorized, perfect outfit for a cold winter day. Yesterday was our coldest day of winter too, ugh!

Good lord, -42C! Our weather is so crazy. I guess I should expect that cold snap to head our way, were only at -6C today out East.

Well I love the stripes, you look ready for the cold and still stylish!

Thank you all - I'm wearing the semi tuck as per your guidance. Feeling cozy and comfy.

I've decided the semi tuck is high on my list of great things I've learned from YLF!

I love this combo on you! It's a little tough, a little cozy and a whole lotta chic.

  • Ingunn replied 11 years ago

OMG, -42!? That's insane. Wonderful outfit, as always, and I love the semi-tuck. I hope the sweater is pure wool. Stay warm, Shannon with the fabulous smile!

    *faints*

  • rae replied 11 years ago

You look cozy and happy, but my brain cannot comprehend that much cold. I would be in ski pants and electric boots to keep warm!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

I am with Rae - can't even imagine how you survive that cold. Is it snowing heavily? Excuse my California ignorance of such things......
But you look amazingly ready for anything and smiling through it all!
Those booties are just killing me - first on Suz and now on you. Great contrast with the stripe sweater.

    Stay cozy!

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Simple and strong. It's 0F here, minus 15 windchill. Brrrrrrr.

    Love the semi-tuck.

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

Had to come over after Angie mentioned the faint worthiness on Suz's thread. Love the partial tuck and slouch with the patent bag! OHHH now I might faint too :)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Christieanne - have had a lot of snow so far this winter but usually when it's this cold, it doesn't snow. In fact the ski is a beautiful clear blue and the sun is shining brightly. We usually get snow when it's warmer and cloudy.

Rae - yeah, it's not fit for man nor beast when it's this cold. I'm afraid I do have to smile when you California girls say it's cold there - lol! But I do know it's all relative.

Thank you DV, Ingunn, Beth Ann and Sarah!

Angie - you ok??? Was the fainting from the outfit or our temperature - lol!

  • Tina replied 11 years ago

These jeans are just so fab, I love the outfit!
I completely sympathize on the weather. It has not only been cold, cold, cold - the snow has been relentless, even when it's super cold. Our winter began with a huge snowfall the third week in October and it has not let up even a bit. On the bright side, I'm getting regular workouts shoveling the driveway. I'm in northern Alberta.

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Stay warm she says:) Love the semi-tuck.

  • Krista replied 11 years ago

I'm late to this party, but I love the semi-tuck! It gives the outfit an extra "je ne sais quoi!"

And in all honesty, I'm hoping your -42C doesn't make it's way east.........

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Fainting always means that your outfit was beyond KILLER.
