WIW: Denim Skirt & Floral Tee (and a hair question)

Casual Friday (or in our office "Denim Days") doesn't need to be just about jeans so I thought today I'd wear my dark denim pencil skirt instead. Plus it's going to be HOT so the skirt will be more comfortable than jeans.

I paired the denim skirt with my voluminous white and blue silk-blend floral tee and simple gold flats. I am using my cobalt/cream/black handbag again (used it yesterday) and a gold watch/wedding band round out the outfit.

Although the outfit is very casual, I still feel put together and appropriate for my Denim Day at work. What do you think?

I also have a hair question - last time I was at my stylist's we were talking about how much we're both enjoying how my hair is growing and I must admit, I'm really liking having a bit more hair to play with, as opposed to my super short pixie cut. She asked me if I would consider growing it out to a chin length bob, either all one length or with a few layers in the top for some movement. I do have a tiny bit of wave in my hair (if I work it) and she also thought I could just sort of "scrunch" it while it dries and go with my natural hair and then also have the option of blow drying and flat ironing it for a sleeker shape. She thought we could leave the side swept angular bang/fringe the way it is since she thinks that front shape really suits my face. Would love to hear your thoughts on this possibility and whether or not it would look good on me.

Tee: Laura Petite
Skirt: Revolution (thrifted)
Flats: Enzo Angiolini
Handbag: Danier Leather

Love that denim skirt!!! Love the pairing... I am terrible at suggesting hair styles.. So leaving it to the experts...

  • krishnidoux replied 10 years ago

Great casual Friday look, Shannon! That tee is simply exquisite, and you have balanced its movement with a structured bag in the same hues. So perfect!

Hair: I am growing mine out too, for a bob as well!
I would really like to see you with longer bangs while keeping it trim at the back, as an in-between style while you are growing it. I think it would suit you very well.

Love this outfit and the I could definitely see you in that hairstyle!  If I know and trust my stylist , then I would try most suggestions...

Fabulous rendition of blue and white! The pale gold is lovely with it. And as always, your accessories add extra punch--the bag in this case, adding depth to your blue palette.

As for the hair, it is worth trying, no? If you hate it, cutting back is easier than growing out after all! But I suspect it will be a look worth keeping the you ring the many other changes in your life.

I love the outfit!  Those flats are super cute!  Where are they from?  I am not good with hair suggestions either, but I think growing it out a bit could be fun and if you don't like it, it's easy to cut it back to your old style.

I love you in these colors.  Calm, muted, but not pastel.  So pretty with your coloring.

I could see you with an inverted bob similar to mine (maybe a little shorter).  I have to say that this haircut elicits so many compliments, and not just the "your hair is so pretty" type.  I actually get "that is a great haircut", and I do think it looks good on most straighter hair types.  I do have an undercut as well, where the underneath layer is cut shorter to help the upper, visible layer hang better; if you have thick hair, this is a good idea to prevent the back from poufing too much.

Oh, I like this skirt and drapey tee combination! What Raisin said about hair :)

  • Glory replied 10 years ago

Love this ensemble and the pencil skirt - another great find.
Hair: I would try what the sylist is suggesting - you can always cut it again. It sounds like it would be very fun

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

The proportions on this outfit are perfect and great shoe choice. I love your hair short but that shouldn't stop you from trying something else - you can always cut it again!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Great outfit, Shannon! You have worn that tee a lot this year (not said in a critical way, I hasten to add...for me, wearing a lot is a good thing!!) and you wear it so well.

Re the hair: what does your heart advise? You would look good with it, I think...but the question is whether it would have the easy care and the bit of edge you are after. It could (and we have many examples of sensational bobs on YLF!!). But would it.

Personally, I think your face shape and personality are ideal for a shorter cut. On the other hand, it's always fun to go for a change. And hair can be cut.

I like the tee and denim skirt - this is a combo I like to wear as well.  I think your hair could look good in a bob and it could easily be cut shorter if you don't like it.  It would be a change and could solve any hair boredom you might be having (not sure if you are looking for a change or not).

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

First to the outfit comments, thank you all so much. I think I'm starting to learn (finally!!!) about choosing items that I will wear over and over again, like this tee. I'm definitely swaying into the camp of having fewer items that I wear more often - and it feels good :)

Now to the hair question, Shevia and Suz have expressed exactly what I'm thinking. Although I think I would enjoy the change, I like less fuss factor with my hair and I do worry that a longer length might not work with my style. Gosh, I can't remember the last time I had hair cover my ears!

ETA: And I wouldn't have thought myself of growing my hair into a bob without my stylist's suggestion.

    Lovely outfit. Perfect work casual.
The hair:. I would start the growing out process and see how far it gets you.
You can Always cut it back if you don't like it or it proves to be too much upkeep. Your hairdresser sounds like she is talented, with lots of ideas. I am sure she will keep you looking great. It doesn't hurt to try it.

  • Joan Joplin replied 10 years ago

I love the outfit! I think you'd look beautiful with the longer hair, but I'd keep the bangs. Your facial structure works really well, with sideswept bangs. The height they're at now hits your cheekbones and highlights them nicely.

  • JulieJohn replied 10 years ago

Great outfit, I love that top, the sleeves, the print, the drape. It's dreamy with this outfit and looks like a great no-nonsense formula for a hot day.

For the hair, it's an easy thing to mess with, as you are enjoying being a human. Later when you are a ball of light you will think back fondly on the days you had hair to play with. ;)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Joan Joplin - thanks for the insight regarding my bangs and and how it works with my cheekbones. I hadn't thought of that.

I think I'm going to stick with my current style for a while longer as I'm really enjoying it and think a bit more on it. Thanks for your feedback all :)

  • harmonica replied 10 years ago

Love your casual Friday outfit! You have the denim pencil I've been searching for for over a year now. Is it like a real pencil and sans pockets?

As for the hair, it would be fun to try. If you don't like it it's easy to cut it. But I agree with Suz - you need some edge!

  • Ingunn replied 10 years ago

Lovely casual Friday outfit, Shannon! I adore that bag (did I mention the bag?) You could certainly add some length to your hair, but I agree with Suz and harmonica - keep the edge in your style. Your hair is really fab right now.

  • Nova replied 10 years ago

Love the denim skirt.  Perfect for a casual Friday.

  • cobaltblue replied 10 years ago

You win a prize for best denim skirt! I've seen a lot of "tee and denim skirt" in my time, and it usually "ain't pretty." :) You look great, and your accessories raise your casual look to another level. The only thing I miss here is a bonus peek at your sweet kitty (kind of a Where's Waldo touch I look forward to in your posts!)

  • Debbie replied 10 years ago

Love the outfit. I di read you are going to stick with your hair style. My feelings on hair right now is if isn't broke don't fix it.

  • deb replied 10 years ago

I had the same hair dilemma a few years ago and decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. It is now down to my shoulders and if I want a shorter look I can put it up. I wore my hair short for 30 years and it is so nice to be able to play with it now that the kids are gone and I have more time.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Harmonica - the denim skirt has flat back pockets and had front pockets that I had my seamstress remove and sew flat so that there is no front "lumpage".

Cobaltblue - ha ha too funny about Gain in the pictures . I'll let him know :)

Definitely going to keep my current hairstyle. Was just a passing thought I guess.

    Thank you everyone.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

That's a super duper denim friendly casual outfit. You look fab in a denim skirt.

I think you'll loose that Special Shannon Spunk with bobbed hair, so I'm a nay vote. But I am all for growing out the layers of your pixie in lieu of a short style that has more movement. I am loving the longer fringe. It's great. Modern short haircuts are about movement - which is why I went longer this year too. I hope that makes sense.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

(Not so secretly smiling to see that Angie agrees with me...)

I couldn't bear to lose my hair twin!  :-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Angie - that makes perfect sense and thank you for weighing in :)

Suz - you're stuck with me as your hair twin -lol!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous casual Friday look, love the blues on you.

Re the hair, I have chosen not to read the earlier comments so as not to be swayed, but I don't see you with a bob:). I love how your hair style draws the eye up and kind of defines your features, it's very flattering and I think highlights your beauty. I am not sure if I have explained it well enough but I think even a short bob could weigh your features down x

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Deborah- I appreciate your insights about my hair. I think you have incredible style which very much includes your distinct hairstyle. I understand what you mean - I have a fairly narrow face and I know that longer hair can accentuate that which isn't all that flattering. Thank you :)
