WIW: Chunky Knit & Leather Puffer

What does a gal wear on Casual Friday when it's -31 with a windchill? A chunky knit and a leather down filled puffer coat!

Today's outfit started with this "faux turtleneck" chunky knit sweater in a soft cream colour. I can't stand turtlenecks on me - I always feel like I'm being choked. But this cowl-turtle hybrid is perfect for still keeping my neck warm while not being too tight.

Paired with the sweater, I chose my TR Cameron slim BF jeans and chose a snakeskin belt for the semi tuck. I love how this sweater is warm and thick but soft enough to drape.

For footwear I went with my beige wedge Toms - I have sprayed them several times with waterproof spray so they are fine to wear out in the snow. Plus the grip is surprisingly good.

To finish off the outfit, I am using my snakeskin handbag and am wearing my rose gold/black watch and gold wedding band.

When I head outdoors, everything will be topped with this cobalt leather down-filled puffer coat. I realize this coat is not traditionally flattering - it is seriously "puffy" but when you're going out at -31, I'm thinking more about keeping warm. I love the bright cheery colour, the gigantic collar, the two-way zipper and c'mon….it's LEATHER!

So what do you think? Good for a cold Casual Friday? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Sweater: Nygard (thrifted)
Belt: Olsen Europe (thrifted)

    You look very huggable!
Are these boots warm enough for -30? My feet would freeze to death in anything short of sheepskin in these temps...

  • Mona replied 10 years ago

Shannon, the leather puffer is wonderful. Both warm and bright coloured at the same time.

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

That puffer is the most beautiful color. It cheers up these dreary dark mornings. It is so refreshing in a sea of black. Your sweater looks warm and cosy.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

Oh, burr...that would be -22 in Farenheit - wowza, that cold! We've gotten to those temps (with windchills), and me no likey...so please don't send that weather my way :(
You look warm and cozy, and I love your belt. The faux tuck looks great on you, btw.

OMG...the leather puffer...it's beautiful on you!

You look adorable, cozy and chic. Perfect casual Friday outfit for a cold winter day. I love your snake accents... and your leather puffer is fantastic. What a great color for you! I do not think it looks overly puffy. The belting gives you nice waist definition. Still waiting here (in Connecticut) for true sweater weather. It has been oddly warm the last couple of days.

Leather puffer. Cosy chunky sweater. BF jeans. You know how to do the minus temps. I hope that you have wooly socks under those Toms.

Fantastic sweater and I think that puffer looks great too!

    -31?!? Ugh!

The outfit looks nice and cozy with lots of texture to keep things interesting, and I love the coat.

Shannon!!  Love this on you!  That is such a great sweater.  I've been looking for it's sister in black.  Such a score and i love the faux tuck!!  I am so glad you kept the leather puffer.  Such an awesome color, shape and so practical!!  Tell me it really is a wonderful as it looks so I can be totally jealous!!

Gosh, this is all kinds of fab Shannon! Love the cream tones and great belt. Your smile and red lippy are your best accessory though. The leather topper is stunning and I personally don't see it as overly puffy at all. Love it.

The cobalt puffer takes the cake :). You look lovely!

  • Missey replied 10 years ago

That cobalt blue color of your puffer is so beautiful on you!  Love the whole outfit.  Perfect outfit for staying cozy.  The temp is the same here in MN and I plan on copying this outfit to the letter!  Thanks for the inspiration :)

Sveta - not to worry! My son put me on to these thermal socks they sell where he buys his outdoor work boots so I bought three pair in men's small (they don't come in ladies sizes) and they are fantastic! My feet are toasty warm.

It's funny how your style eye changes over time - last winter I wasn't sure about this sweater. I thought it might be too chunky for me and I felt a little "meh" in it. This winter? Love it!

Glad you all think the leather puffer is ok - I was incredibly warm this morning.

Thank you for your lovely comments all :)

Love the outfit and the coat! I'm just surprised it's not longer: if I were going out in that weather I'd want the equivalent of a sleeping bag with sleeves. lol

"What does a gal wear on Casual Friday when it's -31 with a windchill?"
Ideally, one wears comfy PJs, gets a mug of steaming hot chocolate, and curls up on the couch under a warm quilt, with a good book.

But as you had to get out of the house, I can see why you put on the fabulous turtleneck and puffer coat. You look great!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Sheesh that's cold, I have trouble wrapping my head around minus temps :)
You look so warm & fab & cobalt loves you.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous cold weather outfit.  A leather puffer, that is so cool!  I have a traditional black, long, one for our super cold days.

  • texstyle replied 10 years ago

Beautiful - from head to toe!

  • replied 10 years ago

You look super. Ugh I am still so sick. I hope you hear about the job soon!

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

OMG, your leather puffer is positively the stuff dreams are made of! I'm faving this thread....

  • JamC replied 10 years ago

That puffer is so unusual and it's beautiful color works so well for you.

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Oh no! Not the Danier leather company again! Everytime I see this stuff I go GAAAHHHH and have to wipe up the drool.  That coat is TDF I cannot even believe they make a down filled leather coat!

And why can I not find a chunky sweater shaped like that at the bottom for under $75?  That doesn't itch?

    California is CCCCCCOld now!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

This is an amazing Friday look!  I'm even more impressed to learn that you managed to pull off something to gorgeous while staying warm.

Love it all.  Especially that puffer!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

E - I do have a knee length red puffer coat that is equally warm but this one is  a great length with jeans.

Ceit - sorry you're still sick. Get better soon ok?

Thank you all so much for the kind words :) I felt comfy and to be honest, rather fab all day. I think I've finally figured out how to dress casually and not feel sloppy.
