WIW: Chambray HEWI

I've been on the lookout for the past two summers for a light weight chambray shirt dress to no avail. I've tried on dozens but there were always issues with fit or style. So imagine my surprise and delight when my perfect chambray shirt dress was spotted at the thrift store last night!

Today's outfit is all about chambray simplicity and started with the dress. I love the weight of the fabric - nice and light but not sheer in any way. I adore the tone of blue - a nice denim shade. I like the roll tab sleeves since the sleeves full length are ridiculously long on me and this allows me to wear the dress without alterations. Plus I like how the slightly bulky roll gives the dress weight - to ensure it doesn't look too "floaty" if that makes sense. The length is perfect - most I tried on were either way too long or way too short. I literally brought it home, washed it, tossed it in the dryer and voila!

I chose my nude peep toe sandal booties for a clean and long leg line and then echoed those nude/neutral tones in the my snakeskin handbag. Jewelry is a silver ring and a fiberglass cuff made by a local artisan. Red specs and red lip finish off the outfit.

So what do you think? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Dress: Old Navy
Shoes: Steve Madden
Handbag: Elliott Lucca

The outfit looks great very stylish. I really like the shoes and have been looking for those Steve Madden ones but I keep coming up with a very similar style that has a higher heel which I cannot do :(

It's perfect! I've been looking for that kind of dress, too. And this one is amazing. And you look amazing in it. :)

Another greatest hits! i have a verrrry similar dress I got several years ago from Lands End that I enjoy wearing year-round by adding leggings during cooler months. You will have many enjoyable wearings of what I predict will become a workhorse for you across many occasions.

    You ARE the thrifting queen.

  • Glory replied 8 years ago

Shannon where did you buy your Steve Madden Peeps? I would love a pair - the heel is lower than many I have seen.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 8 years ago

Gail & Glory - I know what you mean about the heel height of these peep toes. The higher version of Steve Maddens won't work for my feet either. I bought these ones (Steve Madden "Shallow") at Sterling Shoes. They occasionally have them at Hudson's Bay and Amazon as well so check out those sources. And shoeme.ca has them in black.

Thanks for the validation that I was right to grab this chambray dress at its hefty price of $5.99 :)

That is indeed the perfect chambray dress! The fit is prefect! Infact everything about it is perfect. You look fantastic in this Shannon.

Fantastic find - looks great on you and what an easy care piece for summer. I really like how you accessorized it.

Great find!  I think the length and hemline are perfect.  I've tried on many shirtdresses with curved hemlines and it just looks too much like I'm missing my pants.  I like the straight hem on this one.  It makes it look more intentional - like a dress and not a too-long shirt.

Love the simple chic-ness of this.  What a score.

  • Eliza replied 8 years ago

Love you in this chambray, Shannon.  Nice cut, fluid without being overwhelming.  Good proportions.  Looking like summer!  Very lucky find.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Score!  Love these kinds of shopping stories!

The dress is a perfect choice for you, and is modern, casual and flattering.

I have to say there is something here that is really nailing it in terms of structure and fit of this dress. I can't put my finger on it, but your shoulder line looks fantastic - and the length of the dress is perfect. I'm all about a good shoulder line ;)

Neat pairing of cuff and bag - I have a resin cuff from a local artisan too that you've reminded me to pull  out - wonder if it's the same designer?

Wonderful outfit! And the blue nail polish finishes it off with pizazz.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

What a lucky find! It is the perfect chambray dress for you. Looks great with those shoes, bag, and cuff, too.

  • shiny replied 8 years ago

    Yeah for Old Navy!

My only suggested tweak: roll the sleeves up a bit higher... a bit above the elbow... I think it'll balance out where the hemline is hitting. This may be my personal preference but give it a try and report back for me.

On my ON dress, which is petite, the sleeves are actually too short when I unroll them. I don't think my arms are proportionately too long either. Regardless, I don't really care for them unrolled for some reason. After some playing around I have decided the perfect place is to roll them up  about an inch above my elbow. The hem hits just above the knee so to my eye it looks more balanced to have the sleeves rolled just above the elbow. Also reduces some of the sleeve volume, and sits tightly so it doesn't unroll. Then again my version of this dress does not have the sleeve tabs.

  • Windchime replied 8 years ago

The dress looks amazing on you! I'd say it was well worth the wait.

Those kinds of scores are what keep me going back to thrift stores every now and then. I might walk away with nothing several times in a row, but then I'll find something fabulous for a fraction of the retail price.

    Enjoy your new dress!

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Oh, well done Shannon. This dress was meant to be yours.

Glory, you're in Canada, correct? I found the Steve madden shallows at a mall store... Soft moc or town shoes maybe? I was also eyeing them, so had a brief moment of happiness until I actually tried them on and they didn't work for me, at all. Ironically the higher heel height ones do.

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

It is perfect! I like it with these shoes very much.
You don't call yourself Thrifting Queen for nothing! :-)

  • lyn67 replied 8 years ago

    Super chic!

  • jackiec replied 8 years ago

Oh my goodness this looks great on you! What a steal at $5.99. I'd have paid full price for this b/c it's summer perfection.

Glory - I tried the Steve Madden's at Shoeme.ca before I saw them in stores. I also tried them at The Bay. Unfortunately they didn't work for me - but seem to work for lots of fabbers :)
