WIW: Casual & the other specs (ETA WIB @ bottom)

Heading out for a day of coffee and shopping with my MIL - it's her 81st birthday on Wednesday (and will very likely be her last) so I told her this morning I was all hers for the day and we could do anything she wanted. So we're starting at Starbucks for coffee (she loves Starbucks because she thinks it's cool to drink "fancy" coffee - lol!), then we're going to get her nails done, then off to The Bay for some shopping and then we're finishing up with a pint of Guinness at the best Irish pub in town.

So comfort was key for my choices today - I started with my favourite jeans - the TR Camerons and added an a bright coloured argyle pullover in turquoise, white and citron. I decided to leave the pullover untucked for a change. For footwear I went with my cream leather insulated mid calf boots and chose my large cream handbag. When I head out the door, all will be topped with my citron short puffer.

I'm also wearing the second pair of my new glasses - these are even larger and geekier than the red pair. They are DKNY are a burgundy-purple colour combined with clear. I fully understand these won't be to everyone's liking but I adore the retro-geek vibe of these.

Hope you're all having a stellar weekend so far - catch ya later :)

Shannon -- You are a "Breath of Spring" today in your colorful sweater and coat. So fresh! I like your "geek chic" frames and think they are a fun way to switch up your look… a real benefit to having multiple pairs of specs. Enjoy your day out with MIL. Sounds like fun. I agree with her that "fancy coffee" is very "cool".

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

Perfect casual, cozy look! I love how cheery the bright colors are. I think the glasses are super fab!

  • donnat replied 10 years ago

Nice, sounds like a fun day. Lucky MIL to have you. Great glasses, i would love to be going for a guinness today. Have fun.

You look so fresh and spunky, Shannon! And love the new specs. What a sweet DIL you are. Your MIL is one lucky lady to have you in her life. Can't wait to see if you bring home a few new treasures.

I think both pairs of new glasses are very "you".  They're not something I would wear but that's not the point.  I think they look great on you and complement your style.  The argyle sweater is fun and perfect for the day you've described.  I hope you have fun with your MIL!

  • Glory replied 10 years ago

Fabulous outfit - love that jacket and the new specs. You are a wonderful DIL.
How does the light coloured boot hold up in the slush? I am afraid of the slush, very afraid. Plus they are very generous here with the salt.

  • Kiwibird replied 10 years ago

Brilliant outfit Shannon!  Love the sweater and the citron puffer coat is gorgeous.  And I love those new specs - they don't look at all geeky to me, they look so fresh and trendy!!

  • MsMary replied 10 years ago

Oh I LOVE the new glasses on you!!! And the hair!
(as well as the spring-like outfit)

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

What a cheery outfit! You are an incredible DIL to spoil your MIL this way. And, the glasses are terrific and just the thing to alternate with the red ones.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I think every time I see one of your outfits I say, "This is my fav so far." Well, forget all that, because THIS is my fav so far! I love argyle, and the color in the argyle matches your coat - perfection. And what a sweet DIL you are  - I'm sure your MIL had the best birthday ever.

    I love the new specs!

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

What a treasure you must be for your MIL! The size of those new specs as well as color feels youthful and stylish. I love them!

Well MIL and I had the BEST day! She's on a new pain medication regime now and it is making her so much more comfortable which translates into feeling better and able to do more - at least for the time being. She's also on supplemental oxygen now which is helping tremendously with her breathing. So we took advantage and had a full and wonderful day.

I bought her a beautiful pair of grey wool and plum glen paid trousers (or as she calls them "slacks") and a plum cardigan that she chose when we went shopping. The colour is magic on her olive shaded skin and auburn with white streaked hair. I tried desperately to convince her to let me take her picture and show you all how beautiful she looked, but much too shy for that so you'll just have to take my word for it. While drinking our Guinness at the pub after she was giddy as a school girl with her beautiful fresh manicure and chatting about what she could pair up with her new wardrobe items.

I also bought a few items - as if you doubted I would - lol!

#1 - a grey and white/cream knit Chanel-esque sweater jacket. I'm loving the colour combo of white and grey these days and I thought this would look great with my new grey wide legged trousers but it also looked fab with my Camerons that I was wearing while shopping. Could also work over my black sheath, with black trousers, white jeans, etc. Brand is Dex.

#2 - a faded denim and leather sleeved mixed media jacket. Ever since seeing Angie sport her denim and leather jacket, I have been craving this version of mixed media. I also wanted to replace my faded denim jacket which I now find just a bit too cropped for my liking. I saw this baby and it was love at first sight. Brand is Guess.

#3 - this item was actually what I was specifically looking for after seeing it on The Bay's website. It's a cream with animal print front hi-lo drapey top. I am so into this type of shape and drape these days. It works with trousers and pencil skirts alike. And this top will work well with my black trousers, black pencil skirt, cobalt pencil skirt, white jeans, etc. It also looked nice with the Camerons. Brand is Lord & Taylor.

I see these three new items as winter refreshers but also great for spring - when and if it arrives! I'm also trying to ensure that approximately half of my clothing items can transition into both my work and my casual wardrobes.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

So glad that your MIL and you had a delightful day. I love all your WIBs and can see each working now and into the spring.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Sounds like a fabulous day! Love your purchases. The mixed media jacket is swoon worthy. Based on this I could be converted to wearing a denim jacket:). I am looking forward to seeing this on you. And it sounds like this could work for the office as well?

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Sounds like a memorable birthday out for your MIL!  And you are laughing at winter with your sunny ensemble!  Aren't you glad you filled in your coat wardrobe this year?

Love the items you purchases -- particularly the hi/lo top.  I thought of you fondly this week as I wore my Cleo burgundy skirt!

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

This is such a happy outfit (for a happy day!) and it makes me smile to look at it.  =)  And you look GREAT in your new specs.

  • Sharon replied 10 years ago

What a lovely day. It sounds like you both had a great time. I haven't seen you wear those bright, spring-y colours before and they look wonderful on you. So fresh and fun. Your new purchases are wonderful. I can't wait to see you model them!

  • carolbee replied 10 years ago

Lurvvvve the hi-lo top. Very much meets my new wardrobe scheme, if you get sick of it, send it over!

  • El Cee replied 10 years ago

I love your new wardrobe additions -- especially that hi-lo top -- and am looking forward to seeing you model them. I am glad that you and your MIL had such an enjoyable day.

  • Karie replied 10 years ago

I came back to take another look at your fabulous outfit, and then I saw your additional post. Shannon, I think it's so wonderful that you gave your MIL such a special day. It's important to show the ones we love how much we love them while they are still with us.
I predict each of your new gorgeous purchases will become wardrobe workhorses. I look forward to seeing how you style them! And since they are all items on my shopping list, I predict that I will be copying your stylings ;)

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

your new glasses are lovely, they light up your face! love the way your puffer picks up the green from your sweater. your use of accessories and mix of shoe and bags to make a complete outfit is always extraordinary, and once again you have used them to take your look to the next level.
glad you had such a good day with your mil.

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

Shannon, you looked like a nice warm breath of spring in our outfit!  I'm glad you had a wonderful day with your MIL and you both made some excellent purchases.  A day of shopping and manicures with a pint of Guinness sounds about as good as it gets!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

What a wonderful day. So glad you were able to do that with and for your MIL. You will treasure those memories.

And your purchases look superb to me. Wonderful transitional items that will look as fresh in springtime as they do now. Smart shopping!!

Speaking of denim and leather -- I, too, have been craving that look ever since I saw Angie sport her jacket. The sleeves of hers are not real leather, but coated to look like it (I think...). But I know what you mean. So I ordered one, too! I will pick it up at the border tomorrow and if it fits I will show you. But mine is darker denim -- not as good for springtime. However, my other denim jacket is faded, so it might be a good complement to that (I hope.)
