WIW: Bronze & Boots

Autumn weather is starting to creep in now and the leaves are beginning to turn already - time to bust out the boots!

Today's outfit started with my black knit pencil skirt and a simple black knit sleeveless sweater. On top of that, I added my bronze metallic open knit hi-lo cardigan (should have taken a pic sideways so you could see the exaggerated hi-lo hem).

For footwear, it was time to debut the new Doc Martens - oh so comfy and adds that bit of urban edge. I adore the pairing of a pencil skirt with stompy boots - great juxtaposition.

For accessories I went with my red/animal print clutch for a wild pop of colour and print, gold wedding band, red specs and red lippie. I would have liked to have worn a gold cuff but I'm a bit worried about any jewelry catching on the open weave of the cardigan so thought best to leave it off.

What do you think? Does it all work together? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Cardigan: Eileen Fisher (eBay)
Sleeveless sweater: Jessica (Sears brand)
Skirt: Cleo Petite
Boots: Doc Martens
Clutch: Material Girl

Cute Shannon! I like the boots with the sweater. What model of boots are they?

  • viva replied 9 years ago

Great outfit! I love how it still feels transitional with the skin on your legs and peeking through the sweater's arms. Really nice.

  • replied 9 years ago

You look great.  Your style evolution has been amazing.

  • Ingunn replied 9 years ago

Well, this is a new Shannon, and I really like her, too! What a wonderful mix of tough and ladylike. The boots make all the difference. Great outfit!

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

What Ingunn said. The boots give a whole different vibe to the rest of the outfit. Love that EF cardigan with your column of black.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Am I allowed to say "killer" ? Shannon this is fabulous! Wonderful combination of tough, ladylike, edge and elegance. Can I ask are you wearing nude hose or is it warm enough for bare legs? Our weather is warming up and I want to do the boots and bare legs look but it's not quite warm enough. BTW, thank for the inspiration. I have my new manager in the office on Thursday and was feeling completely uninspired re what to wear;)

I really liked this sweater when you bought it but It looks even better on you with your black skirt and sweater. LOVE IT!!

  • Neel replied 9 years ago

Love it! The boots with the skirt is just perfect like you said. And love the leopard and red clutch with this!

  • Windchime replied 9 years ago

Brilliant, Shannon! Your bronze metallic cardigan looks wonderful with your skirt and top (and hair). You wear your Doc Martens so well (which is one way of saying your legs look great!)

Hmm...now would this outfit be an example of soft-edge meeting hard-edge?

  • Thistle replied 9 years ago

Love the sweater and boots juxtaposition. You look fabulous! This is definitely a new fashion chapter for you, and you can see how much fun you are having with it!

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

This is ultimate Shannon v.2014 and you know I mean that as a compliment!

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Love this, Shannon! Wow. I think I like these boots even better than the Marcies on you! You wear this look so well.

    Can you tuck the laces?

The sweater is a perfect autumn addition and I love it with the clutch.

Ceit - these are the Doc Marten Casey boots - and let me tell you, I have got HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY feet today :) Soooooo comfy.

Viva - I'm so glad you mentioned that it looks transitional with the skin peeking out. That's what I was hoping for so I'm glad it works.

Ingunn - I like a little tough peeking out from time to time. Keeps people guessing you know? :)

Deb - no nude hose today. I have bare legs which is quite comfortable still at this stage. I do have on ankle socks though because I'm not comfortable with bare feet in boots.

Windchime - I read Angie's post about soft edge vs. hard edge and I do think this outfit is a combination of both - I'm probably in the middle of the continuum in this outfit.

Suz - Ack! Thanks for the suggestion - laces are tucked :)

Thank you all soooooo much. My happiness factor in this outfit is off the charts. I feel fabulous and am not ashamed to admit it!

    What a fantastic combination!

I can see the back hem peeking out... Love! You look great. Loves me some doc action.

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Well, I have to say when I read that it was time to bust out the boots, my whole body screamed "NOOOOOOO!!"  (But I am wearing closed toe shoes today, so I guess I'm slowly accepting the changing season my self...)  But then I took a look at what and how you'd busted them out, and my face broke into a big smile.  I seriously think this is one of my favourite outfits of yours... it's just awesome.  Tough, yet ladylike, and not at all forced.

PS.  Do you have to lace the boots up?  No zipper?

  • Janet replied 9 years ago

Wow, what a great combination that manages to be drapey and tough in the best ways! I love that you're wearing those boots in a more unexpected way. The clutch is another unexpected touch.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

Elizabeth - no zipper, just laces. But I don't mind. It reminds me of my ice skates when I was younger :)

Janet - "drapey but tough" - maybe that should be my new rubric?

  • replied 9 years ago

Wow!  Love this unabashedly urban look .  The bronzy sweater is absolutely perfect for a day like today - and I like bare skin peeking out - covered yet not heavy.  Red is the perfect makeup and accessory hit here too !  10/10 from me :)

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Shannon, that's why I had/have figure skates!  LOL.

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

No boots.  No boots.  No boots.  Not yet!

Well, OK.  I can enjoy these boots on you because they're so amazingly fab.  You look great today, and cool looking, happy feet are something to be celebrated.

  • Neelie replied 9 years ago

Love the outfit, especially the sweater - really unique but so wearable!

  • Suzanne (ambergreen) replied 9 years ago

Hee, I had the opposite reaction from Elizabeth P and Beth Ann--in other words, "Heyyyy...I wanna wear (taller) boots too!" We are looking at weather in the 90s again this weekend. Ugh.

In any case, you make a fine argument for adding DMs back into the collection. Another vote for fab. :) Plus, I love bronze. Your sweater is very stylin'.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

Thank you all so much :)

I've had many wonderful comments at work today too - the outfit seems to be a hit. I admit I was a bit worried as it's definitely out of the norm for my work environment. Even my boss asked about the boots and then when I commented that they had tartan lining, suggested I roll the flap down to show off the tartan!

And the bronze metallic sweater is even more comfy than I could have imagined - how can you make something with metallic thread running through it and make it so soft and non itchy? Wonderful.

  • Alana in Canada replied 9 years ago

This is absolutely inspirational! Fantastic--I love it to pieces. I am so glad you are posting your outfits. I want that metallic sweater and those boots, for sure!

  • Susie replied 9 years ago

This looks fab, Shannon! I love that you can wear these bold boots looks.
Your outfits always look creative and stylish without looking 'forced.'

I have a similar EF sweater in a pullover style. I think I might try it with a pencil skirt; thanks for the inspiration!

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

This is something I'd wear head to toe! Hopefully that's a compliment. :)

  • Catnip replied 9 years ago

Love, love, love the cardigan on you!  Eileen Fisher must be designing specifically for you (and for me too).

  • Cerinda replied 9 years ago

I like every individual piece, love the way you've juxtaposed different feels, and adore the whole!  Tough, ladylike urbanite rocks!

  • jackiec replied 9 years ago

Love it all. And your red specs just POP and look fab!

  • AviaMariah replied 9 years ago

I so love this combo but the boots make the outfit.  Now I'm wondering if I have room for a pair of Docs.  Thanks a lot!!

  • Parsley replied 9 years ago

That sweater over the black outfit looks fantastic on you, Shannon! I thought it was a dress underneath and did a double take on seeing that it was actually two pieces.
The boots make the outfit quirky and fun. I have to admit that the boots with this are not my cup of tea, but they do add lots of personality. A nice thing with this outfit is that you could dress it up by adding a more refined shoe and it would have a completely different feel, or wear it more casually like this. Whichever way, you're adorable!

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

Glad you feel fabulous because you look sensational.

  • frannieb replied 9 years ago

Great outfit and like the boots. Every time I see your outfits. I go oh I would wear that and then want to go find the EF piece you are wearing.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

So Shamnon, what's the temperature there at the moment? I think I might run cold:). How warm do you need it to be to go bare legged?

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

Stunning outfit, Shannon! I thought you had on a sheath dress till I read that it was a skirt and shell. Fab look with the sweater and boots! And I love the red lipstick and red & leopard clutch!

  • fuzzylogic replied 9 years ago

I love your playful style! Is there a look you haven't tried?!?

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

It all works together beautifully. I love the boots with the skirt. I would tuck the laces if possible. That clutch is gorgeous.
