WIW: Black & Yellow

I realize many folks don't like black and yellow together (bumble bee connotations?) but I often like to wear really high contrast outfits and this combination tickles my fancy.

This outfit is a loose copycat of a Pinterest black and yellow outfit I really like. I started with my black baby bootcut trousers and paired them with my graphic print multicolour tank. I then topped that with my bright yellow with white piping Academy blazer, with scrunched sleeves. I added my black/white leather handbag and taupe leather wrap watch for accessories.

The Pinterest version has just a black and white top and a chunky gold necklace. But I decided because my top was a bit "busier" than that, a chunky gold necklace just seemed like too much.

So what do you think? Does it work? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Tank: Laura Petite

I love the colour combination. Not everyone can wear yellow successfully but you can, Shannon. There are some lovely arcs in your outfit composition: handbag, blazer hem, sliver of instep and the patterned top.

Love it! Works all the way! :)

I love black and yellow as a color combination (I also like orange and black combos, which have their own Halloween connotations instead of bumblebee ones --funny how we create these cognitive associations with certain color combinations).

I think this outfit looks fantastic, even better than the inspiration outfit, because the graphic print shirt you're wearing actually has some yellow to pull it all together. The whole outfit looks great on you!

Love this outfit, Shannon! And that bag is beautiful. I have a lot of black and white and just bought a yellow/citron bag, so I will be rocking this color combo this spring/summer. Buzz buzz.

I love black and yellow, and your outfit works beautifully, Shannon! It doesn't remind me of bumblebees at all. I bet that jacket and top will look great with white pants, too, for summer.

Yay for yellow and black combo lovers :)

Parsley - this top and jacket does look great with my white jeans in the summer. This little tank top has been one of my best wee purchases.

    Thanks all!

Wooohoooo. Happy, HAPPY outfit. 11 out of 10. You are so fab, Shannon.

The combo would look great with white pants too. xo

Gorgeous. I think the lovely top in the print removes all bumblebee from the ensemble. :)

So pretty and fresh. Makes me think of spring and daffodils.

I love this combo too, especially with your bag (and I'm not a handbag person). But wow, look at the inspiration photo...they just HAD to put honeycomb in there didn't they?

I'm on Team Orange with leopardluxe as well, and yes, Americans' problem with orange and black is also so annoying. I really wish they would get past the predictable comments and just let us wear these happy combos!

I think it works beautifully!  I love yellow with black and white!

Well I just love love love this! I wish I had a top like that to go under my citron leather jacket. I also happen to love orange with black!

I love black and yellow too!! But avoid it due to the bumblebee thing. Although you look nothing like a bumble bee. But a pretty spring flower on the other hand .... Yes :) ..... I love sunny and happy outfits!

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

Absolutely no bumble bee in sight!  Although I'd sure take a flower or two at this moment (It's snowing outside.)  Love this cheery shade on you, and you've styled it beautifully.

  • unfrumped replied 9 years ago

Wow, you really pulled this off. Maybe because it's more citron-lemon-y and not bee-golden yellow, but I think it's just your fab styling--the colors and proportions are so pleasing that there are no bee-lines!

Love it! I can't wear much yellow, but I definitely enjoy it on others. You wear this beautifully. I personally enjoy pairing yellow+black+white (actually am wearing this +blush today). I think this looks great as-is, but see no reason it wouldn't also look good with a big necklace; I don't think a big necklace and a print is "too much" though, so don't mind me ;)

Gorgeous! How is the fit on the Academy blazer? I've been meaning to stop in at Gap and try one on.

I also love the color combo...no bumble bee in sight!

    Looks great.

    Beautiful springy freshness!

Dapper! This color combo has been a favorite of mine from a very early age. A friend of my mom's did her sewing room in black-white-yellow and it was the first time I ever saw a room done over like that, so impressive. It was bright, chic, and friendly, and your outfit is just like that.
