WIW: Black, blue and purple booties

Today is the maiden voyage of this Jones New York skirt I bought at Sears a couple of weeks ago. It's a simple lined black pencil skirt but with a strip of cobalt blue at the bottom. I've paired it with a black jersey knit, cowl neck, dolman sleeve, zippered shoulder top that has ruching on each hip and absolutely lovely draping. I love the way this top feels on and how it hides any imperfections. Because the cowl is a little low for work, I've popped a cami underneath. For footwear, I decided to wear my blue-purple Play Aerosole booties (an Angie recommendation last fall) for just another shot of colour. For handbag, it made perfect sense to use my yellow & cobalt snakeskin clutch. Jewelry is a simple gold mesh bangle.

I know booties with skirts/dresses on shorties like me isn't to everyone's taste but it's definitely my favourite footwear combination.

What do you think? Colours and proportions work? As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

Top: Lori Michael Collection (Winner's)
Skirt: Jones New York (Sears)
Booties: Aerosole
Handbag: Trouve
Bangle: Michael Kors
Nude microfishnets: Hue

Phenomenal.. I love that top shannon.. this is so perfect for skirts that are a little tight ...
I must keep a lookout for similar ones...

Love, love, LOVE your colour blocking! Wow! You look so good in this, and the bracelet is just the PERFECT little add-on to bring the whole outfit to another level. Booties make it ultra cool. I love this silhouette on you, so you. And when I saw the envelope clutch! OMG. Sublime. This is such a harmonious outfit both in colours and in structure.

BTW the cowl doesn't look too low in these, but I understand you wore a cami as a protection especially for work.

How do you do that so well?? I'm in awe. Thanks for taking the time to share your great outfit with us.

I like this Shannon! On my screen the blacks have very different tones, but if I pretend the skirt is charcoal then it works :) Booties look really cute with the skirt.

Wow. Love! And I have similar blue suede booties. And a similar shaped color block dress (with different colors). Think I will wear them today and be your twin!

LOVE LOVE LOVE that bag. Link? I may need a bag JUST like that... if you don't mind...

Wow, Shannon - you are at the top of your game here! LOVE those booties and now feel myself lusting after a pair! The skirt is terrific. The top is a great silhouette. And the bag and cuff, with their similar textures....so fab.

Question: Can you wear this top with a jacket as well? I always wonder how dolman sleeves work if one also wants a topper? Does it feel weird or okay? Or do we just limit wearing those tops to times when we don't need a topper?

Cool bag. You look funky but understated. I love your boots and your hemline. Great outfit!

Oh ho hum, another super fabulous, amazing outfit from Shannon. ;-) I love your outfits and they are a never ending source of inspiration!

Suz, I have a dolman sweater very similar to Shannon's that I wore last week with my denim moto on top. It didn't affect the sleeves or anything, it was fine.

Ceit - the blacks do photograph as different but I think that's because the top has a bit of sheen. Looking at them IRL in the light, they are almost exactly the same.

Shiny - would love to give you the link for this clutch but they don't have it anymore on the website. I got it at Nordstrom in January - it's Trouve. I remember someone on the forum (sorry - can't remember who it was) saying they saw it in the store though so if you have a Nordie's close to you, it might be worth checking out.

Suz - I tried the top on under a jacket and this one works just fine (yippee!). I find it depends on how much fabric there is under the arm. This one isn't too excessive and the fabric isn't thick so it works.

Thank you so much for your lovely words ramya, krishnidoux, Jen, Ann, Laren and Shevia!

I have been trying to get the bootie/skirt combo to work on me (a fellow shortie) and have been unsuccessful. I really how you look in this combo. The blue shoes are very fun with the skirt. Initially, I thought it was the pencil skirt that was throwing me, but you are pulling it off so well. Maybe I just need to adjust my eye to it on myself.

    Another vision of Shannon-Fabness!

You wear booties with skirts and dresses with the BEST of them.

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

Wow! Another home run! Love this! The blue on the bag is KILLING me!!

  • merwoman replied 11 years ago

Oh let's crack open the champagne for this maiden voyage - gorgeous Shannon!
To my eye it's a very sophisticated and elegant blend of colours and textures - love how you've put this together, and the final, stunning result!

You are so good at accessorizing! I LOVE this outfit on you. The skirt is beautiful! The booties too.

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

LOVE IT! This is such a great combo, and you find the best dresses.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Thanks Una - but just to clarify, it's not a dress - it's a separate top and skirt. But that's cool that it looks like a dress!

Thanks Kathy, Angie, MaryK, merwoman and Ingunn!

I can't get over how well you put outfits together. This is playful, practical, and just so very you. It makes me think that you always had a good sense of style, but maybe only needed YLF to help point you in the direction of a few more places to shop.

    Love it all.

W.O.W. This is your best yet. I just can't get over the zipper on your bag matching the booties. W.O.W. This is so figure flattering, chic, modern, stunning. Well done!

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Another gorgeous outfit! I really like the low contrast between the blacks, blues, and purple. So moody and cool.

I am loving the booties with skirt/dress thing. I have tried my burgundy booties with different things and the skirt length seems critical to pulling it off, for my short chubby self. I think knee length shows the curve of the leg and keeps me from looking chopped off.
