K/R Yellow Leather Jacket (ETA decision made @ bottom)

The two pairs of shoes I ordered from The Bay arrived today - the animal print pointy toed flats and the grey leather with green neon sole oxfords. Here's the original thread http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....al-oxfords.

The pointy toed flats were surprisingly comfortable but half a size too big. They also aren't real leather so I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not I'll try the half size smaller. They did have the potential to be very comfortable.

The grey oxfords are INCREDIBLE - soft, supple leather, great colour mix and ridiculously comfortable. They are staying - and you'll see them below in some pics.

I went to The Bay after dinner to return the animal print flats (they didn't have them in the store yet so couldn't try the smaller size) and the white Bernardo faux leather moto. While there I thought "what the heck", I'm going to go and try on that yellow moto again at Danier Leather. So doing the girl math from my returns, plus some birthday money I got, this pretty yellow sweetheart ending up coming home with me.

The leather is buttery soft - I just want to pet it all day - and the colour is lovely. It's not a sour yellow but rather a soft, golden egg yolk yellow. The fit is excellent in the shoulders and I can "just" do it up - once it relaxes the fit will be better. The sleeves are at least three inches too long and will need shortening if I keep it, so for the purpose of these pics, I've just tucked the sleeves under.

I've done a couple of quick stylings and must tell you that I'm pretty smitten with this jacket. It makes me smile. And I think the colour is much more versatile than I originally thought. I think it could be worn in all seasons quite honestly and will become more summery or fall like depending on what you pair with it - add an animal print scarf and my brown Esprit trousers with boots, and you have a fall look. Add my white straight leg jeans, open toed booties and a white tee, and you have a summer look.

I like the length with trousers but am less sure about it with a dress. This styling with a dress isn't ideal but you get the idea re: length. I will be honest though, if you think the length, fit and colour is good with pants, I'm not worried about pairing it with a dress.

So over to you...keep or return?

P.S. please excuse my dirty floor - the cats have been playing with this silly cardboard box and there's slivers of cardboard EVERYWHERE!

Love those oxfords! Swoon! I also really like the jacket worn with pants. Personally I find it a bit too long for dresses, but it works superbly with jeans. The color looks great on you too.

  • Kristin SF replied 11 years ago

LOVE THAT JACKET on you! What a fab color and so unique. It makes me happy, too! I can just tell how soft and buttery it feels. I love it with jeans, and I really love it styled with black and white. Great find, KEEP!

  • MsMary replied 11 years ago

    OMG those SHOES!! LOVE!!

I love the jacket with pants. Not so sure with the dress, but it seems you'd get plenty of use out of it even if you didn't wear it with dresses or skirts!

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

Love oxfords! Love the jacket! I think they both should stay and jacket will be perfect with shortened sleeves.
Your color choice reminded me of the time what I got my yellow pencil skirt. I was hesitant at first how versatile the skirt in this color would be and then I discovered it goes virtually with everything and in addition it is a lot of fun. I think this is the way with this jacket.

  • Echo replied 11 years ago

I don't know what it is, but I cannot get over feeling that the jacket looks too big. Of course only you know how it feels, but even zippered up, there seems to be too much room. The sleeves especially look to be a bit roomy. Could you do with a size smaller, or would that be uncomfortable?

That said, I LOVE the colour, and I think it pairs really well with the outfits you put it with. I even think it might go well with some dresses, but maybe not with the one in the picture.

    And I adore the oxfords!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Echo - I did try on the one size smaller but it was actually uncomfortably small in the upper back and shoulders.

it is a slightly slouchier style and the leather is very supple - it is not a stiffer leathered structured moto. In fact in the front where the zippers are attached and on the bottom at the back, it's almost completely unstructured looking. Perhaps that's what throwing the look of the fit off to you?

  • Joy replied 11 years ago

Your yellow jacket makes me smile and is a perfect Shannon topper. I like it best with pants. The oxfords are fun too. Your MIL can't possibly think you wear much black when she sees you in a yellow jacket.

Nobody likes to hear "I told you so" so I am not going to comment. :)

  • Nicole D replied 11 years ago

Oxfords are a major score! Jacket is a lovely colour and I love it with the sleeves pushed up. Really like it with the "zebra" dress. Keep em!

  • Beth Ann replied 11 years ago

Beautiful, Shannon! Love it best in 6 and 7. Sunny color seems to hit your happy place!

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Love the jacket on you & I think it would work with a plain dress or skirt - something more neutral (like #6 but a skirt instead of pants) or something textured.
    The oxfords are fab too.

  • Marley replied 11 years ago

Very cool oxfords! I'm not sure about the fit of the jacket or the color. If you love this color on you and it works in your wardrobe, then the color is fine because you will be happy wearing it! But, what about the fit? To me, it looks big and kind of wrinkly?

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Love the oxfords. I wasn't sure in the original thread but they look very fab. Im not sure about the jacket. It's the kind of thing that I would get excited about and then tire of very quickly. It reads very much to me as a casual piece and I feel I have seen you in jackets that are much more flattering in their design/cut. I don't mean to be negative but I want to like it more than I do.

  • Lyn D. replied 11 years ago

Shannon, it is your personality made into a lovely leather jacket!
Not a colour I would normally enjoy, but it seems to 'go' with everything in these photos.
Wearing it you would never go unnoticed!

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

Love the color on you. If you love the jacket, keep. The shoes are so cool !

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

I really like the way the jacket looks with grey. I think it will look great with a mostly white outfit as well. And of course with black, it is a classic look and great for the office.

It looks like the jacket is designed to have looser sleeves but a more fitted body. Or, it could just be a trick of photography and the fact that they aren't properly altered yet. Or, Shannon, you have delicate slender arms. So the sleeves fit is the only issue. Otherwise, the jacket is perfect in every way. You can see from the pictures that it's soft, quality leather.

ETA -- oxfords are amazing! No question about those.

  • rae replied 11 years ago

I was SO hoping you'd try the yellow. I'm smitten with the color and kinda want one for me, too. ;)

I was also questioning whether the sleeves are too wide. I'm raising an eyebrow at myself because of my recent sleeve issues with the trench... the soft, slouchy materials might not photograph the way we see them IRL. The sleeves also look so amazing pushed up, which you probably would not be able to do if they were as fitted as the body.

  • ElleH replied 11 years ago

I love those Oxfords Shannon & think I want them! I love the colour of the jacket. I don't feel I know enough to comment on fit in this changing time in fashion, where looser fits are intended in the design. It seems to fit in body & shoulders when zipped so maybe the arms are supposed to be like that for layering.

I want some of those Oxfords in the other colour, if budget & priorities, as per Angie's great post, allow. Do they run narrow? Do you think they are soft enough to stretch in width? Are they more of a jazz ballet type shoe than an Oxford do you think? I hope so as that is what I want. A soft barely there shoe.

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

I'm with Cocolion, Shannon. I immediately noticed how big (differentiated from long) the sleeves are. The body seems to fit quite nicely, but I think your arms are swamped by the sleeves.

    The oxfords are adorable!

  • Raisin replied 11 years ago

Gosh I love oxfords of all sorts, and these ones are great on you!

The jacket - color is fab, it's a bit loose to my eye. Are you planning to wear it mostly in Spring with thinner tops, or would you put knits or sweaters under it too?

ETA - I think it's the arms that are too loose, not the body, the body looks really e good zipped actually. But not ridiculously loose, just something I noted if you want to be super PPP.

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Shannon, this is a great purchase. It brightens beautifully the outfits you wear it with above, and the colour is flattering on you. Keep. And congratulations for your new Oxfords. They are very cute.

BTW I absolutely adore the jeans in 6-7. They fit you so well! And go really well with the jacket too. What are they?

  • Karie replied 11 years ago

I love the jacket and the shoes! I would wear the jacket year round, too!

  • Thistle replied 11 years ago

Love the shoes, those are keepers for sure.

I love the jacket on you. It goes with all of your neutrals, and the yellow looks great on you. It is also a happy color for you.

I think the sleeves will be fine when shortened. I think a bunch of the "slouch" comes from rolling them under and there being that extra fabric. I am not totally sure on that, though, as I am still figuring out fit.

  • Vildy replied 11 years ago

I love the jacket. And you didn't ask about the handbag and maybe it's because it's closer to the camera but would really like the jacket outfits worn with a smaller and jauntier handbag. That jacket just sings.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

The shoes are a no-brainer and glad you all like them.

Echo - I would say they run TTS and are medium width. I don't find them too narrow but if they were, the leather is soft enough that I think they would stretch some. They are definitely more like a "barely there" shoe but have a surprisingly supportive and comfy footbed.

Krishnidoux - the jeans in 6 and 7 are a pair of dark wash Reitmans straight leg jeans - they are pull on jeans of all things. They are very comfortable and I've had them for a few years now. Amazingly good quality for low price point.

The jacket - there appear to be questions and concerns regarding fit on both the body but more so on the sleeves, as well as some questions about the colour. The sleeves are definitely not going to fit like my black leather jacket which has knit on the back making them very fitted. This is a looser style jacket overall and is not at all what I would call a structured moto. The leather is much, much too soft and drapey for that. Danier would shorten the sleeves and I could also ask about narrowing them some if that's possible and affordable. Do you think that would solve the issue?

  • Claudia replied 11 years ago

I think you scored with both these. Especially crushing on these oxfords.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Shannon, the colour is so fresh and fun, and I agree it could be styled in many ways for different seasons. i much prefer this jacket with the trousers at this point, but it is possible as the leather warms and once the sleeve issue is fixed, it would look fine with dresses as well.

I am uncomfortable with the fit of the arms as well. I do think shortening would help, but overall they seem a bit bulky anyway. I wonder what Danier would say re: alterations.

    Your new oxfords look great!

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

Oh, the oxfords are the bomb!

And if anyone can rock a yellow leather jacket, it is you! I think it looks particularly great with the pants outfits, and it's a terrific accent for all the black and white in your wardrobe.

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

I like the oxfords and the jacket worn over the dress I dont mind the proportion of either although it is less conventional that a shorter jacket would be. But I am struggling with the yellow, it is SO your personality in a jacket though! Perhaps it is the beige wall and the yellow jacket pairing throwing me off....

  • lyn67 replied 11 years ago

I actually love the motto with the dress, too, and it's such a fresh colour! lOVE THE OXFORDS, TOO:-)

  • replied 11 years ago

I think the color suits you but, I know I will need to hide under a rock after this, did you try the size down? The jacket looks a little roomy for a brand new leather jacket. I am just thinking about your prior Danier purchases and how they molded / stretched after a while plus the fact that you are on a weight loss program. That looks like lambskin, it will stretch.

I think you should go for the next size down.

    Shoes are awesome :)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I did try the size down and it was uncomfortably tight across the back of the shoulders and had about a 2-3 inch gap at the waist - I don't mind a jacket that can't physically be done up, but I like it to at least look like it could and the size down didn't.

I'm getting the sense that I should be returning the jacket?

  • replied 11 years ago

No, not all all. I do love the color. I have not read the other comments yet. If the next size down does not work, and you love it, keep it.

  • Sara L. replied 11 years ago

I think the jacket looks great on you! The sleeves look okay to me and once you get them shortened that will probably fix any minor sleeve issues. I think some of the problem is that some fabrics just don't photograph that well. It's hard to get a sense of the softness of the leather from a photograph.

  • ironkurtin replied 11 years ago

Oh you are so much braver than I am. I could never do a yellow jacket. If it makes you happy, keep it!

  • Jules replied 11 years ago

It's such a beautiful colour, especially on you. I agree that this kind of warm yellow can transition better into fall than a citron. My wondering question is, if leather is not that tight to begin with, will it still stretch all that much? I think not?
I'm no fit expert or stickler! I especially love it with the dress, the outfit is beautiful and totally distracts me from any less than ideal jacket-over-dress fit.
The price is good enough that I don't think you need to be *that* hung up on long term wear.

  • Jules replied 11 years ago

Oh and I love the way you rock Reitmans, lol. The more into style I get the less I find appealing there, but for basics, why not? And the quality is good especially for the price point. Everything I have bought there has lasted for years & many washes, often long past the point I want to wear the item! The pants become lounge/garden mucking wear.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Decision made: I'm going to return the jacket. I think there are enough questions to make it not "the one".

Not gonna lie - I'm disappointed BUT I also know I will appreciate all of your honesty and my return when I find something better - it's all good :)

  • Jules replied 11 years ago

I mourn this one along with you, Shannon.

  • bj1111 replied 11 years ago

shannon...i'm glad you returned the jacket. i didn't want to comment because it made you so happy so that happiness factor is worth it. but you don't want another closet orphan.

perhaps a yellow bag would add some happiness?

  • biscuitsmom replied 11 years ago

:( I loved the yellow jacket (sniffle) but I know there will be others you are 100% happy with

  • krishnidoux replied 11 years ago

Re: jacket: if you don't feel it 100%, then it's the right thing. Maybe another better Danier jacket will come along. I did like it a lot on you though, but I see how too many hesitations make it not worth spending all the $. You are so wise in your purchases now, it's an inspiration for me.
