Eileen Fisher dress - good for apples?

After reading Angie's brilliant post this morning on how to dress an apple shape, I got to thinking about dresses. I don't really wear my dresses much anymore (other than my black sheath dress). I find it hard with my particular shape and high waist to get the top half and the bottom half of the dress to fit properly, the waist to be in the correct spot and for my tummy to not be accentuated.

I have had this Eileen Fisher dress in and out of my cart too many times to count. It comes in petite and is a fairly substantial jersey. I personally love this kind of cowl neckline as it elongates my neck and flatters my upper chest and collarbones, one of my favorite body parts. I think it would work well to hide wobbly tummy bits and if I added one of my structured toppers to it, would give me that structure and shape I crave.

Do you think this dress could work on my body shape?

ETA - I also like that it tapers a bit at the bottom so that there isn't too much fabric around the legs.

I love it. Totally worth a try, I'd say.

I love this type of sack dress shape!  I can't speak to the apple bit but I think it's definitely worth a try.

I think you should definitely try it.  It could be a workhorse!

I definitely would try it. I have two of the Lantern dresses from last summer and they are workhorses.

I think the sack dress will work great.

Oh you sweet enablers! I can see this working in the cold weather with boots, tights and topper, and then (depending on the heat) in the summer with sandals and no topper...off to press the "buy" button...

Ooh - I love it!  Want one for myself.  I may need to buy some substantial jersey and try making it....

    I would try it.

As a pear, I have all but given up on dresses. Skirts, I am enjoying, but dresses are just too hard to get the top and bottom to work.

Yes, you should try it. I think it will look wonderful on you as long as it is not too long.

It's a beautiful dress! You will only know if you give it a try!

Definitely give it a try! I love that cocoon shape and find it very flattering. I bet it will look great on you.

Well when I went back they were sold out of the Petite Large and only have Petite Medium left. My metallic silver EF top is a Petite Medium and fits and I know EF fits a bit big - but then the silver top doesn't have to go over my tummy and hips...what the heck...worth trying...

Bummer about the size availability, but I hope can find one to try.

Shannon - I would definitely try it.  I love EF but I am a slim rectangle and sometimes it's just too much fabric for me.  I think her cuts often favor adorable apples - lucky girl!!  I think that's a very pretty dress, gorgeous neckline and looks like a bit of cocoon shape reigned in at the bottom.  I think it might look awesome on you!!  Plus her stuff really works with leggings and tights a must in this vile weather as I sit here waiting out the blizzard!!  I'd love to see this on!!

Apple here and I would buy that in a heartbeat! Definitely worth a try!

  • Debra replied 10 years ago

This dress is wonderful, I'd wear it in a heartbeat and I'm sure you would look great in it, especially with your graphic jacket :)

Update: I found a petite large in the dress brand new in eBay so have purchased. There's no returns but I can turn around and resale if it doesn't fit. Then I'll know to go with the medium. Fingers crossed!

I think this has great possibility for you, Shannon!  Can't wait to see it!

    Many thumbs up. xo

This looks great! Good luck, I hope you love it!

Stunning dress. I'm an apple and I would have to try this is on if I saw it in store. I would expect it to skim the body and create a nice line. And I find cowl necks very attractive. Looking for forward to seeing it on :)

Thanks Beth Ann, Angie, Natalie and Deborah. Sounds like you all think the style has great possibilities for me. Let's hope I got the size right.

I have the EF lantern dress that Debbievhas and just love it. I think I may also have an EF dress very much like the one that you are considering with a cowel neckline and of the substantial jersey, except that mine is sleeveless. A 4 or 6 is usually my size and I got the dress in a regular XS for length.
You may want to try the medium too if you see a great price
