Casual dress formula #2

I picked up this green dress at Old Navy last week for $19 and will be keeping it regardless. I love the colour, the cotton is lightweight but the dress is lined so no see through problems. It is probably not the most flattering silhouette in my hip area but to be honest, it doesn't bother me. If you feel the dress isn't fab, I will relegate to just wearing around the house and not out.

I've tried it with my Stuart Weitzman animal print sandals and RL vintage cross body bag, as well as with my faded denim jacket.

Does this work? I would also pair the dress with my flat floral shoes for super casual.

It's a great color on you and I actually like the way it fits.

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

To clarify on the fit: it does look cut a little wide around the hips almost as if it's a little big on you but the alternative, to have it fitted, would mean the fabric would pull and it wouldn't hang as well. The way it has a sort of purposeful bell shape is feminine and evokes runway cuts to me. So this is why I like the way it fits.

Thanks for the feedback Denise and your analysis - it is definitely cut this way on purpose. I did try the size smaller for comparison but it was then much too tight across the bust.

I really like the color on you Shannon, and I love the pairing with the leopard sandals. I feel I can not objectively comment on the fit as I have poison eye for this kind of skirt shapes on anyone.

As Denise said, I think that the fit/hip issue is intentional, and I like it on you! The color is lovely, and it seems like a great easy breezy summer dress.

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

It does fit differently that on the model: from the site I thought the skirt is A-line but on you it looks like a tulip-pencil almost. However I still like it and the color is great. Is it true to life in the picture: it looks more grass or even apple green in your picture and more emerald on their website.
Online price is $45- how did you manage to get it for $19, you Wonder Thrifty Woman?:-)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Sveta - the colour IRL is somewhere between the website photo and my photo - I would call it a true Kelly green. When I look at the website model, it definitely fits differently. Is it possible I got some "rogue" dress? It was the only green one they had left in the store. As for the price, it was sale on dresses in-store last week.

I'm wondering if I should order one online and see if the fit is the same? Never mind - they're out of my size now.

I'm actually just thinking that maybe it's the way it was packed and where some major creases are. I suspect it might soften up some in shape once washed.

I absolutely love this dress on you! Color, fit, everything! It would be a waste not to wear this out of the house.

  • Diana replied 11 years ago

I like it! The color is gorgeous and I am a big fan of tulip shaped skirts. Yes, it emphasizes the hips a bit but it is supposed to, and the looser fit around the hips makes it look intentional. I am super pear-y and I wear this shape of skirt all the time.

I actually think this dress and the accessories/jacket are perfection on you!

I really like the way the dress fits and I think it's flattering. I love the cognac/leopard paired with this green, and I really like the light color of the denim. To my eye this is pitch perfect.

You ladies have made my day! Whoo too!!!
Thanks for all the input - always very appreciated!

I think the skirt shape is different and cool! I love it... and I kinda want it now. Cotton you say? Need to take a look! How did you find the sizing?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

I found it TTS - I'm consistently a medium at ON. I am wondering though if because it is so different IRL than on the model on the website, if it's just this one dress (like a one off sort of thing) or if the skirt is shaped this way on all the dresses.

Regardless, it's super comfy, lightweight and ultrasoft. Definitely worth taking a look.

It's great. I love the color on you. It would be great with a darker denim jacket as well...or your white one. And your green patterned shoes....so many clothes....so much fun!

I love this dress and this color on you and I am glad you are definitely keeping it. As an aside, I will mention that I did not notice one thing about the hip fit being unflattering. Now my self-conscious area is not my hips but my permanently pregnancy shaped middle and that is probably the area I tend to focus on with myself and others (mostly to admire others' waists). I just found this a good reminder to myself that everyone else is not zooming in on our self-perceived issues like we are. Back to the main point - love the dress and the styling options!

I really love the vibrant colour and the shape is good. The dress really lends itself to accessorising, so it will be a goer for wearing OUT.
How does it look with a white denim jacket? I'm thinking that it needs a slightly shorter one than in pic #4 ?

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

I find the fit of the dress ver feminine and flattering. The color is amazing and I particularly like it with the animal print shoes. The detail at the hem is very pretty and adds a touch of vintage.

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

I wouldn't be self-conscious about this fit in the least! As Diana says, the tulip shape looks completely intentional (despite the website photo) and very flattering. LOVELY colour --- will be perfect with your vintage buys too. That green always looks great with retro.

Beautiful color. I needed that dress on our very hot day yesterday - sweltering! I think you will appreciate having this for wear in a heatwave. It is so much better than the pineapple skirt for any potential patio gatherings or strides about town.
Lovely with the denim jacket !

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

I think it is a super colour and a fab summer dress! It's wonderful to have simple outfits like this on the hottest days. I love the tulip shaped skirt, myself (both in general, and on you) and do not find it unflattering to you.

How does it look with that new flowered blazer you picked up?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Thanks for the boost of confidence Claire, Shevia, Lyn, Deborah, Manidipa, Christieanne and Suz!

Lyn - I have a white denim jacket but it's the same length as my faded denim.

Christieanne - definitely better than the pineapple skirt!

Suz - oooohhhhh didn't think about the new floral blazer. Will have to try that out!
