Burgundy skinnies - what works, what doesn't? (pic heavy)

Not long ago I posted that I didn't like myself in skinnies and found them to be unflattering. Well lo and behold, last week I came across these Attitude by Jay Manuel dark burgundy skinnies, fell in love with the rich colour, tried them on and brought them home! I love the colour and the fit and feel they can work in my wardrobe both for casual wear and for work. The skinnies aren't a keep or return as they are staying.

I just spent an hour playing in my closet with some very quick stylings and I was right - these will be very versatile and I'm surprised at how well the colour works. Can I trouble you to look at these stylings and let me know what works and what doesn't? If there is something that doesn't, are there components of the outfit that work but one of the items needs swapping out? Plus I would love any and all suggestions on what else to pair with these.

BTW please excuse the complete lack of make up or hair styling. I literally took these about an hour after getting out of bed and just having had a cup of coffee. Haven't even brushed my teeth yet…

#1 - with black booties, silk shell and leather blazer
#2 - same outfit without the blazer
#3 - same outfit but with navy Lanai blazer instead
#4 - with denim shirt
#5 - with cream silk blouse, sand wedge booties and fur vest (this looked better in my head and is a fail)
#6 & #7 - with my emerald green cashmere sweater (thanks Astrid for the great colour combo inspiration!)
#8 - with a simple cream chunky knit and sand wedge booties
#9 - with gold drapey sweater, animal print belt and booties
#10 & #11 - with animal print tank, Spiegel leather jacket and black booties
#12 & #13 - with black tank, black booties and charcoal drapey Eileen Fisher cardigan (time to break this sweater out!)
#14 - with animal print tank and purple leather jacket (although the purple is a different shade, can they work together as tonal?)
#15 & #16 - with animal print tank, python booties and white leather jacket
#17 - with black booties and blush Zara blazer
#18 & #19 - with tall black leather boots and cream/black striped sweater

I have burgundy skinnies, sized up, from H&M and love them with browns and greys. I like all your stylings. I will mark this post to copy some of your ideas, if you don't mind. My favorites are 1, 9, 10, 11/12, 13/14 and 15.
ETA some of my burgundy jeans outfits. Looking now, those leopard booties may be too much.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Well, you certainly look great in skinnies from where I sit! I really like these and agree the colour is very versatile.

There's nothing here that is glaringly bad but my favourites are 1, 9 (LOVE!), 15/ 16. I also quite like #14 and it seems to work according to my monitor, anyway!

I'm a little less fond of 4-8 simply because the sweaters seem to cut you in half at the leg break, if you know what I am saying. If you draped the sweaters or faux tucked, I think the proportions might work a bit better. But I'm not sure you can -- depends on the fabrication, right?

Looking again, another solution might be to add a burgundy toned scarf in #8 -- just for some bookending. I know you don't really do scarves all that much, though.

18/19 works better to my eye...I guess the contrast is not as high and then the light stripes bring attention to your face.

  • El Cee replied 10 years ago

Shannon -- you look great in skinnies. This particular pair is a lovely color on you... and, yes, looks to be very versatile. I can see why you were excited to go play with them. All your stylings are great. I especially love #1, #8, #10, and #15. I very much like your amber-colored kitty accessory in #4. (He is beautiful! And looks fab with denim and burgundy.)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Joy, Suz and El Cee - thank you so much for your feedback.

Joy - I'd be humbled to have you copy anything of mine!

Suz - most interesting that #9 is your favourite. I love the drapey sweater with these skinnies and although I thought I would never EVER semi tuck with skinnies due to my mid section issues, I do think it works. It elongates my legs and makes the proportions work better, doesn't it? I can definitely semi tuck the green cashmere sweater (plus it looks great with the animal print belt). The cream sweater is more bulky and less likely to tuck nicely but you must by psychic 'cause I also thought of a burgundy infinity scarf for bookending. I'm actually really liking a lot of casual outfits with scarves these days and a feel a bit of pull towards them.

El-Cee - kitty Gain is quite convinced he goes with EVERYTHING!

Keep the feedback coming ladies - I always learn so much from your wisdom :)

    LOVE 1, 8, 9, 10, 12/13, 14, 15/16, and 18/19.

I'm not loving 3 -- to top seems to not belong.  I think the skinnies would work with the vest over a light sweater, perhaps.

On my monitor, the colors in 6/7 aren't harmonizing.  Now I love my rust colored pants with cobalt and teal, but my monitor is reading as a strong mint or aqua.  Not sure I'm seeing it accurately.

9 must be a party look!  How "Diva" are you feeling.  What happens if you wear a leather jacket or......wait for it........the fur vest over top?

The pants are fabulous.  They're "relaxed skinnies" which makes all the difference!

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

    Oh.  Brush you teeth!

  • Kristin L replied 10 years ago

They all look great IMO, but my favorites are 6/7, 9 and 18/19.

  • unfrumped replied 10 years ago

Yes, I think they work and it's all in the styling.
I like the more somber or richer colors with them, than the aqua.
#9 is fab, with bookending. Also 1, 10 and 15.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Beth Ann - so glad you chimed in. I assume you meant #5 when you said "the top seems to not belong"?

My poor green cashmere sweater just never photographs correctly :( It is a shade lighter than a true kelly green IRL. Definitely not mint or aqua. My yellow toned wall throws off the colour on this sweater every single time.

Oooohhhhhh….love the idea of the fur vest over the gold sweater outfit…SHAZAM!!!

And yes, they are relaxed skinnies. I don't do skin tight so sized up one and love the fit. Here's hoping they don't bag out though or they will be too big.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Cross posted K and unfrumped - thank you for your comments.

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Love your stylings! The burgundy skinnies were a great find for you! I love 9 and 10. The fur vest is a bit tricky. And I might need some styling advice from you on that, as I have a similar one.

  • Nebraskim replied 10 years ago

These are great and the burgundy/denim color combo is fresh. I think I dislike skinnies on me, but really haven't tried in years because of fit issues (my really large calves mean the lower legs are usually tight.) So why did you try them if you thought you would not like them? Was it the color? A desire to get out of comfort zone? Were you surprised when they worked out?

  • pastrygirl replied 10 years ago

I like all these stylings! Particularly the metallic sweater -- what a great combo!! I also like it with the gray jacket. Gray and burgundy is a combination I plan to wear a lot this winter. I also love #17!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 10 years ago

I seem to have gone through the exact same process.  Decided I wasn't enamored of skinnies then bought some because they seemed to work.  I also see a similarity in that the ones we both bought are not super skinny below the knee and aren't suck to the butt skinny either.

I think they look really good and liked every outfit.  I do think I prefer them not tucked in boots which is opposite of most skinnies.  I really liked 5, 9 and 12.  I think it is my usual proportion thing.  Broken record here.

Great find Shannon.  It is so nice when you find a piece that adds variety to the wardrobe and is still so figure flattering.

  • Aubergine replied 10 years ago

Those do look great on you, and very versatile!

I had to post because, looking through those, #5 was actually one of my favorites! And I'm usually not crazy about fur vests at all, but something about the funkiness of the vest with the delicate pattern of the blouse really works for me.

Other outfits I really liked were 9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14. The only one I was a little unsure about was #17. Something about the shape of the blazer makes me wonder if it would be better with wider-legged pants or a skirt than with skinnies? Or if maybe a longer top peeking out from under the blazer might be worth a try here? I'm sometimes pretty clueless about proportions, though, so feel free to conclude that I don't know what I'm talking about at all!

  • Shirley replied 10 years ago

What a visual treat. My favorite is 10, 11. I also love all the sweaters.

  • Mo replied 10 years ago

it looks like you've found plenty of ways to integrate them into what you've got!  I'd keep 'em.  At first glance of just the thumbnails without opening them, 6/7 and 18/19 seem to not work as well to me, due to the contrast tops cutting straight across the hips.  Granted, I have not opened and looked in detail, but from first glance that's the impression I get.

  • Runcarla replied 10 years ago

Isn't Jay Manual something else? Love his stuff. You know he's a Canadian boy,eh!

These pants absolutely work for you. #3, #9 (my favourite) and every combination with the grey leopard top get my vote. I like the denim top for the colour, but would like to see the pants colour repeated (the infinity scarf?) # 6-7 are my least favourite, but it is the colour of the top, not the shape. I think the shape of the top is good.

Don't know if these would work, but for colour clashing fun you could audition your orange top, and don't you have a hot pink one too? And, the yellow leather jacket?

  • Tricia replied 10 years ago

10 - 14 all look terrific. I think I like these with the longer tops the best, and/or with jackets.

  • Sveta replied 10 years ago

Burgundy is a great neutral color and works really well for the skinnies.
My favorites are ##1,9,10,14 and 15. I like the idea of 18 with boots but would prefer to see the sweater more fluid and a bit longer but it is not bad at all.
The colors in #3 just do not play together well - at least on my monitor.

  • bj1111 replied 10 years ago

faves: 1,5,9,12,15 and 18.  what i like most about these...the cark color schemes are softer--charcoal instead of black e.g. while the bright outfits esp the one with the white jacket (i die) are vibrant.

tiny tweaks: try #2 with the taupe shoes.

experiment:  use #2 blouse under the white jacket.

  • Angie replied 10 years ago

Look at you creating your little burgundy skinny jeans capsule. You clever lass. I'm glad they are keepers, Shannon. You look divine in these little darlings. Special shout out to #9, #10, #16 and #18.

  • Inge replied 10 years ago

These were a fantastic find for sure, Shannon, wow! The skinnies look fab on you, and so does this colour. Angie's faves are my favourites too. LOVE how versatile these are going to be for you. And how fun is that striped turtleneck jumper!-)

  • karymk replied 10 years ago

Awesome job! I adore you in the burgundy pants, they are so versatile with what you have! The only stylings I did not think were your best looks were 4-8. This was fun to look at. Thanks for taking the trouble to show us your great handiwork.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

It is exactly this type of feedback that makes YLF such an incredible place! I always learn and grow style wise with your suggestions.

I'm glad you all think the burgundy skinnies work for me because I really REALLY am happy with them. And yes Carla, LOVE Jay Manuel's stuff! I have a few of his pieces now and am really impressed with the fit and quality at such a reasonable price point. I'm glad that Sears Canada is carrying his line.

Nebraskim - it was the colour that drew me in and I just thought "why not try them". And yes, I was very surprised that they worked. I really had a preconceived notion of how I would look in skinnies and it wasn't that at all. I really am trying to learn that you cannot predict the fit of anything until you try it on.

Dianthus - these do fit quite similarly to your cobalt skinnies and I thought about them when I tried them on. Neither one of us likes that "stuck to you" kind of look and these didn't have that. And look at how versatile your coloured skinnies have turned out to be?

Aubergine - I do like the fur vest with them, just not with that blouse. But I already have another idea to incorporate the vest so still think I can make it work.

Carla - will definitely try these with my hot pink sweater. My orange one is actually put away for the winter as it is a very light weight knit and offers no warmth whatsoever. I actually returned the yellow leather jacket so that's out too.

bj1111 - LOVE your tweak suggestions and will definitely give those a whirl. Thank you!

Angie & Inge - when the two of you chime in and use words like "divine" and fab" - you just make my day :)

Inge - that striped pullover was actually a Goodwill find last year and is one of my favourite cold weather casual items.

Thank you ALL so much for your comments. I always appreciate your time and thoughtfulness.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

Well clearly they were a great choice and you were right to immediately decide to keep them. You look great in a lot of these. I agree with Suz and maybe others that the horizontal line, when it is high contrast, is less good than the semi-tuck like in #9, which I love. I expect to be seeing more of these in the future!

  • Missey replied 10 years ago

I do love the skinnies on you; all are lovely but my personal faves are 3, 9, and 13.  My very favorite is your smile, it is beautiful in all outfit variations!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Shannon I like each of these outfits. Personal preference dictates I like some better than others but I have no complaints:)

#1, 10 & 13 are so fab with #1 being the standout for me.

Tell me why do you think these skinny jeans are working for you where others haven't? I know for me, I allow my weight to dictate things like this. Do you think this has any bearing for you? Hope this isn't too personal a question:) I have always thought you looked great in skinnies regardless but I do know how sensitively we can see our own proportions.

  • Ariadne replied 10 years ago

    YES!  1, 8, 19, 10, 15 and 18 are my faves.

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I'm so chuffed to catch one of your posts. I have only saccaded the thumbnails and will go back for a forensic look in a mo.
My immediate reaction is that the proportions for all are spot on except the iterations with the turquoise top. They look "half and half", chopped across the middle, to my eye.
I shall go and see if that is the case close up. Penny

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

OK! I think I've nailed it. The emerald green (sorry, not turquoise) sweater isthe only one where you have not scrunched the sleeves. Isn't that interesting? Angie always says that flesh adds structure, so isthat what I am picking up on?
Anyway, that aside, the rest of your stylings show a range of looks from at home by the fire to dressy. The colour is versatile and the cut looks great on you. What a find!

  • londonkiwi (now back in NZ) replied 10 years ago

Just chiming in because firstly you rock those skinny jeans and secondly that many outfit changes first thing in the morning is amazing.

My favourites are #1 and the one with the white jacket.

Also to say that over two years ago I bought a pair of burgundy jeans encouraged by Inge and Jean and they have been huge work horses in all seasons.

  • CocoLion replied 10 years ago

What a pair of jeans!  They look outstanding on you, they flatter in every picture.  And how do you manage to look so cute without makeup and "only" one cup of coffee?  *Envy*

Ideas -- for the vest outfit (#5?) try minimizing as the furry vest is so maximal.  Black turtleneck and black booties maybe for a spy girl vibe?

For the teal cashmere sweater -- it's an unusual color combination but I like it.  Are you open to trying different color footwear?  (I love the tan shoes when bookended with the lighter sweaters, just not as much with the teal sweater.)  For example, brown for a tonal look, or black would work too, then tie it together with some accessories featuring a bit of brown or black.

Love the striped sweater in the last photo, looks great on you!

And the sparkly sweater (#9?) is perfect for a holiday gathering.

Speaking of dressy, have you tried these jeans with a pair of pointy pumps (don't you have Okalas?)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

Wow - you prove that these are perfect for you!  (I need a pair!)  I was surprised by and immediately loved #9.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

Morning, Shannon!  Yep, it was #5 I was referring to.  I like Denise's "spy girl" idea.

I suspected that the green sweater was photographing differently.  I trust your eye completely.

  • Momo replied 10 years ago

They look great! 10-16 are my favorites.

  • Jules replied 10 years ago

This time of year I am stocking up on skinnies. I hope skinnies under tall boots never goes out of style because it is the perfect thing for Canadian winters. Yours have enough width and scrunch at the bottom to also be worn with booties etc. I think I need to go to Sears more often!
I picked up some burgundy semi-skinnies from Jacob but mine are quite a bit brighter. I like them with grey and mustard.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Shannon, I am seriously thinking I need to do a Sears online order. Our Sears, like our Bay, has nothing in stock, which is the problem -- I cannot try on. So I hang back, not knowing the sizing. Lantana made a good point about sleeve scrunch, I think. Also love Denise's "spy girl" styling idea.

  • Emily replied 10 years ago

    I really like #4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 18.  Especially 10!!

These look like an awesome fit on you and you wear the skinny style beautifully.  Excellent find.  You are clearly in possession some sort of special Sears shopping talent - Sears Whisperer?

  • Diana replied 10 years ago

1 and 10 are my favorites. You look great in skinnies. I'm not crazy about the ones with the turquoise and white sweaters, I think because of the proportions. I am also not wild about 9 even though I love the gold and burgundy combo, but I am personally not a fan of the shapes created with tucked or semi tucked skinnies on anyone really.

  • lyn67 replied 10 years ago

Keepers o sure, esp love them with the cuncky sweatters!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Sorry I'm so late in getting back to this thread…

Deborah - not too personal a question at all :) I think there are a few factors in why these skinnies felt right for me. First, the fabric was stretchy enough that I didn't feel like a sausage but thick enough that I didn't feel every lump and bump showed through; the rise isn't too low so that I worry they will fall off my backside if I bend over; and a newfound comfort with my body. Yes, I've lost some weight and inches but I am by no means at my ideal weight and size. But I've come to some sort of "truce" with my body over the last year and I'm letting a lot of my hangups go - they just hold me back, you know?

Penny - I think you're totally on to something with the sleeve scrunching. It does give me more structure in an outfit. I also think the green sweater would work better with a faux tuck as well.

Denise - oh my goodness, your observations and suggestions are brilliant! I can't thank you enough. You have such a great eye for pairings and proportions that I will truly take these to heart. I love your idea for "spy girl" with the fur vest and I'm glad you like the burgundy/green colour combo 'cause I love it (it truly is better IRL than it photographs). I have chocolate brown heeled booties that would work well and could be bookended with my animal print belt. I have a pair of Okala copycat shoes that would work…OH MY…I just thought of pairing those shoes (which have a dalmation black and white toe) with my black sequinned tank and leather jacket for another sparkly holiday outfit! THANK YOU DENISE!!!

Suz - I'm really pleased with several of Sears' offerings this season. Both Sears and The Bay have upped their game in terms of what they're carrying but I also think through the teachings of Angie and YLF, I'm learning how to make local items work in similar ways as higher end items, which is making both me and my bank account very happy.

Thank you everyone for your fantastic feedback :)

  • Robidi replied 10 years ago

I like them all, but #9 is just stunning!

  • replied 10 years ago

Holy cow woman! You really have shrunk! I haven't been getting to everyone's WIW's for a few weeks and you have been hard at work, obviously.

Ok, now that that's out of the way, these skinnies look great. There were so many great outfits that I couldn't decide which ones worked and which ones I was just biased towards (my preferences over yours). I have to say that I can agree 100% with the ones that Angie mentioned. Enjoy your new pants!

  • Petite Marj replied 10 years ago

Another brilliant capsule, Shannon. Many thanks for all of this  work...
My eye immediately went to #9 - such a "regal" colour combination. The top has a lovely drape too. #10 has a definite "city chic" look with the animal print peeking out from the moto.
As has already been mentioned, I'd love to see #5 with your black booties and a silky burgundy top.
These skinnies already look like they are going to be one of your best fall/winter workhorses.

  • Mia replied 10 years ago

Wow, instant workhorse.  I love that they are from Sears.  Perfect burgundy for your wardrobe.  You just can't go wrong with these but I think you already know this.

Are you able to get a leather/pleather jacket under your fur vest?  Can look very mixed media without buying another item  and up the cozy factor.  When I do this people sometimes think it's one garment and ask me about it.

  • Marley replied 10 years ago

Great purchase Shannon!  #9 sends me into orbit!  LOVE it!

  • rute replied 10 years ago

love ALL of them! 11 is my favorite!!
It's a color that goes with everything!

  • viva replied 10 years ago

Love 9, 13-16. And am completely envious of your jacket collection.

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

These skinnies look like they will fit perfectly into your wardrobe.  I like all of them except for the turquoise top.  I'd rather see navy blue than turquoise paired with the burgundy color.  Nice find!

  • Petite Marj replied 10 years ago

Many thanks, Shannon, for giving my my very first YLF icon. Seeing it brought a huge smile to my face...
