Best Purchase of 2012

I commented in my WIW post today http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....anta-scarf that my Danier Leather black blazer was my best purchase of 2012. Now I had a lot of great purchases this year - footwear, handbags, dresses, jackets, even a puffer or two. But my leather blazer makes me feel great EVERY time I wear it. I feel like it takes each outfit its paired with to a higher style quotient. So that's why I'm naming it 2012's best buy.

Interestingly enough, it was also the most expensive item I purchased in 2012.

Over to you....what was the best style item you purchased in 2012? Was it clothing? Footwear? Accessories?

This post is also published in the youlookfab forum. You can read and reply to it in either place. All replies will appear in both places.

I can't think of a best purchase, so I think it is a reminder to SYC and plan my purchases more carefully

But your jacket is awesome :)

  • texstyle replied 11 years ago

Fun question! I have also gotten several things I really enjoy this year but think I just got my favorite thing recently - this perfectly worn in, feminine leather studded belt from sundance that fits my casual lifestyle to a tee. I've been wearing it every day since it arrived since I live in jeans and cords in winter. I feel like I have jewelry on even when I don't! And DH loves it too which is always a big bonus.

My best purchase was pair of white skinny jeans. I thrifted a pair of white Christopher Kane bootcut jeans that were too short and then modified them to become skinny jeans. They aren't tight skinny jeans, more of a slouchy skinny which makes them more comfortable. I wore them all spring and summer and even into the fall/winter, although I find the slouchiness a little harder to style with winter shoe styles than I did with summer sandals.

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Great question, Shannon. And now let me follow it with one: what style number was that blazer again? (If you have the info handy, I mean....don't make a special search.) Just want to be sure I have the right one. I am strongly considering (if it is the same) in TAUPE! It might be my birthday present from hubs if I ask him nicely....

Now....considering....I made some really great purchases this year, thanks to Angie and YLF. Some of the best of my life so far. Which makes it awfully hard to choose.

Can I name more than one?

The first wasn't even a purchase, really. It was a "freebie" from consignment: a pair of classic trousers by Theory. So why do I name those pants? The quality of the fabrication made me feel so great that I immediately went in search of MORE products from the same maker and bought a sweater plus another pair of pants, and then found yet another sweater on consignment. (And was gifted with a lovely short trench by BJ!) I feel as if this has started me on the path towards buying higher quality, so it is significant.

My Stuart Weitzman booties, for the same reason...and they were the most expensive item I bought all year.

I would also add my Bleulab reversible legging jeans, because they are so comfortable and give me two looks in one!

  • Mochi replied 11 years ago

I'm not sure....I made some very good purchases this year (almost entirely shoes, boots). I think last year I was figuring things out so much and made some questionable purchases, and this year I don't have second thoughts on what I bought, even though some items were rather pricey. So for me just knowing I've gotten better grips on shopping and my style persona is the prize.

  • rute replied 11 years ago

My best purchases were 2 moto leather jackets a black and a grey. I've been wearing them a lot

  • replied 11 years ago

It's this one, Suz (although Shannon got it in the black): http://www.danier.com/leather-.....colour=198|cab485&mc=yes

  • ironkurtin replied 11 years ago

    My Rick Owens jacket.

My Herff-Christiansen LS tops, because I wear them underneath EVERYTHING.

My new "slut dress" which I have yet to air on YLF.

  • replied 11 years ago

I bought Monty (my python bag) at the beginning of 2012 and I think perhaps that was my best purchase. And I quite stumbled on him, since I was just looking for a bag that would look good with my taupe moto. I knew nothing about snake skin, or that it would be trending this year. I just thought the texture was interesting, the color looked good with my jacket and my hair, and the hobo style looked relaxed and casual. I think this bag upgrades any outfit I wear it with in an understated way. I wish I knew how to recreated the outcome of that shopping trip, but I think it was just serendipity.

I love that leather jacket on you Shannon, and I can see why it wins your MVP award.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

Great thread! Your jacket is KILLER, Shannon. And it's fun to recognize some of the favourites here from everyone else's WIWs.

It's like Sophie's choice trying to decide between my purchases (and the ones that were gifted to me that were sooooooo spot on). I am Team Bench. This is not a cop out because I just love ALL my new things so much!

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

That's what I thought, Ceit! Thanks.

I had ruled out a blazer in leather, but I am beginning to reconsider. Hmmmm.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Good sleuthing Ceit - yes, that's the one!

Suz - that leather jacket in taupe would look STUNNING on you! They must have just come out with it in that colour. Definitely worth considering.

Love all your favourites ladies - such a great variety.

IK - so when you gonna debut your slut dress? Would love to see it.

Mochi - "style personal" is a fantastic prize!

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! Suz, Shannon *and* me posted at the same time. Cracks me up.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Angie - I would say that being on Team Bench is an excellent sign that you have great taste in your items!

Suz - FWIW, I find this blazer style far more versatile than a leather moto.

HA HA HA HA - just did it again Angie!

  • ManidipaM replied 11 years ago

Red skinny jeans --- and boy, were they a surprise. If you told me last year I'd be wearing skinnies, let alone bright RED ones, I'd have laughed my arse off!

But to be fair, thanks to a lot of help and nudging from YLF, I've had some very happy purchases this year --- new black shoes and bronze sandals, a black leather bag and a floral canvas one, an assortment of knit non-T-shirts and woven tunics and tops... It's been a long time since I was quite so satisfied with my shopping expenditure.

ETA: Oh! I want to see IK's 'slut' dress too! :-D

  • Raisin replied 11 years ago

For me it would be my new blazer, even though I don't have much chance to wear it yet, I am sure I will in the new year. I love the oxfords DH got me. And I can't wait to get my menswear shorts on this spring! The mustard Joie top was a surprise as I wasn't sure the color would be good on me, but I've loved it and worn it a lot so far.

  • bj1111 replied 11 years ago

    so many definitions of best...

...value, jrew tissue turtles in a handful of colors, theory blue moto and surprisingly, fur vest.
...source of a smile, vintage 2.55 purse, fur vest
...versatility, helmut lang printed dress--worn as a cocktail dress to a black tie event, sundress watching koalas, under an oversized sweater, over tnecks, under peplum/moto/dinner jackets.

really, the best thing i bought this year was satisfaction with my wardrobe--buying things that i love without making price the absolute measure, cleaning out the closet of things that make me less than fab and wearing everything instead of saving it for a special occasion.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

bj11111, you are Team Bench! But I love how you isolated that the best thing that you bought this year was satisfaction with your wardrobe. Very inspiring.

Shannon, I feel like hugging you.

  • Isabel replied 11 years ago

WOW, that is a fab jacket !

I don't know...I bought tons of stuff this year in replacing my entire wardrobe. I love a red plaid wool LLBean short coat that I got as well as a rose wool blazer with piping from Boden. Yet, the most practical and useful ( and I am very happy with it ) is my grey trench with a removable lining from Nordstrom's. How is that for an answer ?

I can say, that because of YLF, I loved everything that I bought. I gave myself permission.

  • Amy replied 11 years ago

I've made some mistakes this year, as usual. Most notably buying three pairs of jeans that are too short. When will I learn that I have to be patient and mail order tall pants?

However, I did end up with one thing that always makes me feel good: my Mcginn sparkly tweed jacket. I LOVE it.

  • annagybe replied 11 years ago

I had to think about it, but this year, probably my Improvd woven leather jacket.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

    Right back at ya Angie!!!

bj111 - you're so right that there are many definitions to "best". Love your items and your satisfaction with you closet.

Fantastic items Manidipa, Rae, Isabel, Amy and Anna!

  • Phoebe replied 11 years ago

Best buy 2012 was a black lace pencil skirt plus black leather jacket that I wore nonstop.

  • replied 11 years ago

    Mine is my Frye 8Rs.

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

Ooh, this is hard. I am pretty sure I bought more clothes this year than any other year of my life, but I was adjusting to a new size, revamping and honing my style, and having a lot of fun taking advantage of having the disposable income to do it. I will be slowing way down in 2013.

I may have to be on the bench on this one, but right off the top of my head, I can tell you that the Zella quilted jacket, the burgundy Pliner booties (I'm wearing today), my blue leather IRO moto (my most expensive purchase probably ever), and my black Fossil booties are up there. Also my white Vince blouse, the burgundy Elizabeth & James blazer, the Clergerie spatter-patterned oxfords, and the blue oxfords. I also scored a simple black Vince boat neck top recently on one of the flash sale sites that is becoming a workhorse.

My closet is in great shape -- I'm happier with what I have to dress with than I have ever been before.

  • Angie replied 11 years ago

You are sooooooo benched, Janet :)

    Smiling back @ Shannon.

  • Sveta replied 11 years ago

I struggle to pick just one! SE python and Dave Tate animal print booties are on the list - they make any outfit look great. So are my summer purchases - FS nude cage sandals and Hush Puppies yellow and cream flat oxfords.
My first ever white trousers from Express and white cotton blazer from Melanie Lyne - I felt like a movie star when I wore them in summer! My first slouchy trousers from Long Tall Sally after my mom tapered the legs - I have to stop myself from wearing them every day. Burgundy Naya booties, MK animal print belt, JNY polka dot dress...
I will stop now - should go and sit on that bench I guess...:-)

  • rae replied 11 years ago

Oh, wow, how to choose?? Gap BF jeans? Gidigio boots? Zella jacket??

I guess I am benched, too. I cannot decide!

  • Tina.b replied 11 years ago

Have so enjoyed reading about everyone's favourite pieces and shopping successes this year! I'm agreeing with the difficulty narrowing down to a single favourite item.

For me the ultimate measure of the success of an item has to be how often I'm drawn to wear/use it. So my #1 pick is my black Balenciaga Velo bag. After eight or so months I have to force myself not to carry it everyday. Even when it doesn't match. It is so easy to use, perfect strap length. Looks right with all sorts of outfits and is totally me. Casual yet classic.

  • Janet replied 11 years ago

Tina.b, you just reminded me of another brilliant purchase this year -- my metallic clutch! It goes with everything and I have to remind myself to switch things up and use my other fab purses too.

  • Mo replied 11 years ago

Ooh, this is hard. My two leather jackets I have only been able to wear once each, because of climate, so I don't know if I can consider either a 'best' purchase yet. I also adore my wine skinny cords, but again climate limited their wear until very recently.
I can say my $8 'paper bag' olive dress was a big hit and I wore it more than anything else this year. Also, it shifted my style dynamic in dresses to a drapey silhouette. I will declare it the best purchase based just on number of times worn, and also because it moved my style direction.

  • TraceyLiz65 replied 11 years ago

Way too enthused with my weight loss and some great thngs to limit to just one. I will say that I am most thrilled with my new collection of shorter and cropped jackets that are better for my height than what I was wearing last year to cover up the weight...
Second to that would have to be my two pairs of shooties...Oh, wait can't forget my purses... see too much to pick!

  • milehighstyle (Linda) replied 11 years ago

My tall black Blondo boots from NAS. Having short, thick legs I never thought I'd find boots that I could tuck jeans into. So fun to wear and comfortable "to boot". Thanks for the recommendation, Angie and everyone else!

  • Sarah A replied 11 years ago

I am going to have to go with my JCrew calf hair leopard print belt. I considered this and another one I didnt like as well but that was 1/3 the price. DH convinced me to get the more expensive one I liked better and it has made all the difference. A good lesson to me: spend the money for KILLER as opposed to trying the scrimp the pennies and not be completely happy.

  • modgrl replied 11 years ago

It has to be my new boot purchases. All of them have been getting so much love.
I am really happy I didn't wait for the R&B to go on sale. I bought them at full price and have been enjoying wearing them for months.

My worst purchase of the year was a pair of Seychelles pumps. I wore them around the house and they seemed comfortable enough. They killed my feet after a few minutes outside. Also, the leather on both heels tore right away. That was a waste of $98.

  • Emily replied 11 years ago

Oh gosh, it's hard to pick! I think by virtue of "most worn" and by that I mean at least once a week I would have to say my Silver Suki Skinny Jeans, which I may have purchased boxing week 2011, so I guess they technically don't count.

In that case, it's the JCrew Tipped Peacoat. LOVE that coat.

  • Sylvie replied 11 years ago

I am benched. I can't pick just one. I bought several workhorses:

    Red belt from Strasbourg
    Black/white oxfords
    Black moto jacket

    My new recent loves:

    Red skinny jeans
    Frye Melissa boots

  • jenanded replied 11 years ago

This has been hard as I am planning on some rethinking for 2013. BUT I do love my marc jacobs crossover bag. Right size, cross over, but holds a bunch of stuff. I can do life hands free yeah!

  • JAileen replied 11 years ago

Mine has to be my brown Frye campus boots. I wear a lot of earth tones and they go beautifully with everything. I love them equally with slacks or jeans. I got the version with the lug sole and so I also have great footing when it's icy. It's been a win win win.

  • Jewell replied 11 years ago

Been looking forward to this thread, and I've really enjoyed reading everyone's responses. My best purchase of 2012 was my fucshia blazer. I tried unsuccessfully to wear blazers for months before finding one in a smile-inducing color that fit my body and style persona just right. Despite not being a super expensive item, it was my most expensive purchase of the year and I paid full price for it. That was an important lesson for me. My second best purchase was the two pearl necklaces I bought. I didn't realize what a wardrobe hole this was until I filled it. No MCP's wardrobe is complete without pearls!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

First off, thanks so much for all chiming in! It has been delightful reading about what you love in your wardrobe.

It's interesting to note that the favourite items run the gumut of everything from jackets to jeans to boots to handbags to belts. You just never know what's going to become a workhorse. I also like that for many of you, these favourite items either started a style shift or were purchased as a result of a style shift.

  • cciele replied 11 years ago

Well, I guess my answer would depend on whether my best purchase is a workhorse or something cool.

Workhorse: black James Perse t-shirt or Zella quilted jacket
Something cool: Pink spikey Jeffrey Campbell combat boots or black strappy Demobaza trousers (I don't think I've posted photos of these here)

I think I need to sit on the bench while I decide...

  • Joy replied 11 years ago

I've been happy with several things but the best will probably be the Stuart Weitzman python booties. They bookend my hair, have a fun pattern/texture, low heel and are 12 hour shoes.

  • Nanabear replied 11 years ago

As a frugal student, my best purchase would be my best deal. I bought this pencil skirt in first week of January. It was leftover stock from boxing week so everything was on deep discount. I had been searching for a classic pencil skirt within my budget for ages for presentations and business competitions. I found the perfect dark grey pencil skirt at Sears. It had 3 layers (built-in slip!) and was made from substantial quality material. It went to the top of my kneecap so totally competition-appropriate. And it was marked down to $6! I couldn't believe it and found out there was a further 50% off on all clearance. The cashier couldn't believe it either and we had chuckled at the $3.39 (incl. tax) skirt.

This skirt has accompanied me to Utah and won me 4th place at an international business competition, so we're pretty much inseparable now :)

  • Caro in Oz replied 11 years ago

Great question - really made me think. For our winter just past I bought some skinnies & then went back & bought X2 more in slightly different washes - they got constant wear & were so comfy. I've always been good with the "statement" pieces but I'm really learning the value of the wardrobe basics & essentials.

  • cinnamon fern replied 11 years ago

My leather jacket. Not only because I love it and wear it constantly, but because it was the result of my first successful extended search.

  • Echo replied 11 years ago

Hmm, mostly accessories were my best purchases of the year. Shortly after the new year, I found an amazing sale price on a God Save McQueen scarf, and it is my favourite scarf EVER. I treasure it and sometimes hesitate to wear it for fear it will get "worn".

Second is my cobalt blue RM MAC. It is versatile and the perfect size. I may buy another in a different colour just because it works so well.

  • nancylee replied 11 years ago

Ay! Great question, Shannon, and so hard to answer since I love so many of my 2012 purchases....BUT I think I'll go with my GAP really skinny black trousers. I wear them so much I had to buy another pair.

  • Laura replied 11 years ago

Boyfriend jeans. They were a totally new silhouette for me and changed everything I wore. Next, Sam Edelman red booties. Dang, I have worn those SO much!

  • CocoLion replied 11 years ago

    I have numerous "best purchases"!
    - Rag & Bone booties (recent addition)
    - Grey MKors clutch I got last winter
    - 2 pairs of True Religion bf jeans, I wear them constantly. One lighter wash, one darker, I got these last April.
    - My neon yellow belt from J Crew
    - My black belt from Madewell
    - Tuxedo pants -- one from Rag & Bone, the other from Shakuhachi
    - Leather moto from Zara
    - Grey skinnies from James Jeans

Look at this, I am happy with so many things this year!

And I am still happy with these things from last year:
    - 2 pairs of US-made booties from Vintage Shoe Co.
    - Sessun oversized coat
    - Burgundy skinnies from 7
    - coated skinnies from Paige
    - Two cozy, washable cardis from Nordstrom

    Dissapointments this year:
    - T by A. Wang knit skirt
    - T by A Wang blue top that goes with it
    - Expensive Vince cardi, I wear it but it's already pilling.
    - Almost everything I purchased at Loehmans

  • Suz replied 11 years ago

Denise, are you disappointed with the T quality, or for other reasons?

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Caro - let's hear it for fab basics!

Denise - what a fantastic list of things you love. It's clearly been a good year for you.

  • citygirldc replied 11 years ago

My few big purchases were my burgundy leather jacket from Nordstrom, Dr. Maarten Marcy boots, and my new light coat from Anthropologie.

I'm sure I've forgotten something since a whole year has passed by but these are the three that really stand out right now.

  • Deborah replied 11 years ago

Im going to be boring and say I can't pick one piece. Over the past 12 months I have slowly and steadily revamped by wardrobe and I can honestly say that I am loving everything in it and everything is being worn in fairly even rotation. But I have loved reading everyone elses picks and note Im not the only one who cannot choose.

  • Ariadne replied 11 years ago

Best purchase of the year is also the most recent: a faux leather moto from Express:

I was going to wait until I finished losing weight to buy a moto, but I tried this on on a whim and it was instant love. I did some quick calculations and realized the CPW would be reasonable even if I only wear this for one year, so I went for it and am so happy I did. I've worn it every other day since I bought it a few weeks ago. I'm halfway into my weight loss so I figured this was a reasonable reward! Glad I BBQ because it's sold out in black now.

It's this one, only in black:

    Chloe satchel.

This was a hard choice. Short list was Chloe bag, black and cream knit top and
Theory moto jacket. Chloe bag wins - pomegranete glazed leather and it somehow goes with everything in my closet. I am looking at it on a cost per use basis and it's coming down quickly with no end in sight!

  • christy replied 11 years ago

Hands down, without a doubt my new Aquatalia black booties. I've worn them with trousers, suits, jeans, skirts and dresses! They are so comfortable that I want to wear them every day (and I nearly have since I finally brought them out of shoe purgatory!). They are the most comfortable pair of 3 1/2 inch heels I've ever owned. I wear them all day and don't have the "I can't wait to get these off" feeling I have at the end of the day with most of my other heels. They weren't cheap, but I am glad I spent the money on them. I think these will seriously affect the way I look at other shoes. My guess is that I will become *much* pickier and save up for the perfect pair rather than any pair that seems to catch my eye.

What a fun list! I've enjoyed reading everyone's responses!

  • Nadya replied 11 years ago

I'm pretty sure it's my black Fluevog Stop It Stad booties. I adore them, they're comfortable, cute with slacks, and funky with skirts. They're also the most expensive thing bought this year.
    http://www.fluevog.com/code/?w.....iew=detail

But nagging at the back of my mind are my brown Fitzwell tall boots. They're the first tall boots of my adult life and have completely opened up my winter dressing options. I got a screaming deal on them last spring and put them to work this fall.

    http://www.zappos.com/fitzwell.....ilian-calf

Hmm, the boots I love or the boots that let me bring my skirts and dresses out to play more?

  • goldenpig replied 11 years ago

Best purchase this year--a pair burgundy maternity skinnies. Once I got over my hurdle of not wanting to buy any maternity clothes (because it's my last one and I already had some from before, although they don't feel quite as fab anymore) and let myself buy a couple of new maternity pieces, it changed my whole attitude about maternity dressing. I will make it through my pregnancy while still feeling stylish, and I won't run out of clothes! I'm wearing the heck out of these burgundy pants and I feel like I'm still keeping up with the current trends.

  • Elly replied 11 years ago

Hmmm . . . I bought only 7 items in 2012. I am really very happy with my three new gap supersoft layering tees, the ralph lauren turtleneck blouse I bought at Marshalls, and my two newest pair of jeans. The older pair of jeans and other two tees (more like gear) are good and functional but not quite as great.

  • anne replied 11 years ago

My favourite was the dress I bought for my brother's wedding, but the most worn and versatile was a faded red ruffled cotton twill jacket with a action pleat at the back. Am wearing over everything in spring/ early summer!

  • replied 11 years ago

Shannon, I had to really think about this, because I love most of my 2012 items.

But suddenly the clear winner dawned on me: my OGI eyeglasses. I've worn glasses my whole life, and this is the first pair I really love. I give YLF all the credit -- I put up four different batches of frames before you all helped me pick this pair. So worth the effort. I get compliments every time I wear them, my husband loves them, and they make me feel fierce!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 11 years ago

Hmmm....I think footwear might have a slight lead in favourite items for 2012!

Ali - I LOVE that you chose your eyeglasses as your favourite!

I'm so enjoying reading about all of your wonderful choices and items. Didn't we all have fun shopping in 2012?!!

  • Lisa replied 11 years ago

My green jeans were an impulse buy from the sale rack. I had been looking for colored jeans for ages so when I saw these and they fit, I grabbed them. I've worn them at least once week since summertime.

  • christieanne replied 11 years ago

So many new things, so hard to decide! I have changed my style of dressing for work (casual is encouraged) and embraced a preppier, more colorful side of my personality lately. But so many items will most likely not make it over the "long haul" - say two years down the road.

I do love my spur of the moment ebay red boots although I don't wear more than once a month and I wouldn't' call them a "game changer".

The purchase that has made me feel good every time I wear them (once a week or so?) and they still look great and will for a long time to come is a pair of Jag dark wash jeans. Good fit, classic color, straight leg, hemmed for a low heel or flat. Practical and kind of boring but you can't go wrong when you don't have to worry about your outfit :)

I am inspired by so many of your choices - great leather jacket Shannon!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

Burberry coat and Gidigio boots. The two priciest items I've ever bought. Sigh.

  • rholmes27 replied 11 years ago

My Pikolino gray suede booties! I wear them all the time, & this purchase coincides with the beginning of my journey with YLF.

So, for 2013, I am looking forward to honing my warm weather wardrobe (my dominant season) & finding a purse that I am as satisfied with as several previous YLFers.

  • D'Ellen replied 11 years ago

Well, I bought a lot in 2012, and I love a lot of what I bought. But no one particular item really stands out. This has convinced me that I need to focus on fewer, but more special, items in the future. That said, my best group of purchases would be my "collection" of Foxcroft blouses. One of my favorite looks is a crisp button-front, and I finally found a brand that actually fits me and stays crisp with no ironing. Yay!

  • lyn* replied 11 years ago

I discovered dresses from the UK. Never going back to crummy north american stores. ever.

    *GROWL*

Probably one of my flare twirly dresses!

  • DonnaF replied 11 years ago

I bought a lot in 2012; starting fall 2011 I replaced nearly all my wardrobe. [No weight loss; rather I finally figured out that just because something still fit and wasn't threadbare didn't mean I should still wear that 1980s/1990s/ 2000s whatever.] Nothing I bought was terribly spendy, so maybe that's why not too much stands out. But I went into a total panic when I thought I lost my Target (!) black with white polka dot scarf which has become a total workhorse for me. Of course, as soon as I arrived home with its identical replacement, I found the old scarf. I am a scarf person anyway, but find this scarf unusual in that it is not too hot to wear in warmer weather.

Others around me might say my bright, bright blue fake $28 suede booties from TJ Maxx were my best purchase. They certainly elicit comments every. time. I. wear. them. They have certainly taught me about *statement* footwear! My fussy, bunioned, arthritic feet rein in almost all purchases, however.

  • Jjsloane replied 11 years ago

I'm going to have to join the fab ladies on the bench. I bought a lot and am overall quite pleased. I've added a ton of blazers (and thus ignored my cardigans) - faves are the Gap Academy (bought in 2 navy/black and black/white) and wore all my colorful Olivia Moon ponte blazers to death (camel the most). I already had BF jeans but have worn them more. I got 3 fabulous bargain pieces - Tori Burch silk layered tank ($28), Kate Spade silk blouse ($32) and my best (but I've only gotten to wear this once so far - below but I plan to wear it a lot and the quality is fantastic) my Exclusively Misook lace skirt for $19!!)
I think 2013 for me will be focusing more on less items (since I have a very large base)

Coming in late as usual, but I've enjoyed reading all the responses and the warm fuzzies of everyone thinking about their favorite items.

I must say that the item that gets my love is a gray and white leopard print cotton gauze scarf that I got at Kmart for $3 on the clearance rack. I have worn it with everything and on all occasions, it is soft but not flimsy, lowers the contrast in other outfit pieces, and is light enough for warm weather. It casualizes a work outfit and dresses up a knit top and jeans.

Second place is a gray with thin black striped sweater, bought at JCPenney for possibly $15? I like it for the same reasons, I think. It always looks nice, feels comfy, doesn't bag out during the day, washes well, and is more polished than a tshirt.

Have a good holiday, everyone! If you are receiving gifts, may they fit well, live long, and prosper. :-)

THANK YOU all for your wonderful responses. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all of your favourite/best items.

Here's hoping we have just as good luck in 2013!

Hi Shannon, I will enjoy reading this thread when I have more time.
Just wanted to add my 2012 best finds:

George Gross (thrifted) lightweight black wool skirt.
Heaps of jackets and scarfs-love them all!

My Gibson riding jacket has become a wardrobe workhorse. Although not a purchase, I am in love with the Joie oversized sweater that my husband gave me for Christmas.

Thanks for starting this, Shannon. It's been a really fun read.

For most of my life I carried a single purse until it wore out (or some might say long after...). This year, I purchased two summer bags from a local friend who has a popular etsy shop (blue calla). The first was a total whim bought in winter for summer use, yellow with white flower print fabric bag with wooden circle handles. I thought it would be near-impossible to wear and that I was surely making another dumb purchase - but had to have it - turned out it went beautifully with my boho looks and I learned a lot about pattern mixing and trying unexpected combos. Then there was the better thought-out colour blocked bag in orange and grey faux leather. I knew orange would be in and that I had the perfect grey shift dress. I framed the rest of my non-boho looks & purchases around this bag and it worked out great.
I learned the power of the bag and of special pieces via my beloved bags!
Edit: I just realized that what I did last summer was basically build a capsule around my bag, grey dress and a couple of other pieces I had (tangerine cardi). Previously I thought in terms of outfits, my bag was the bridge piece that helped me think in terms of mix and match capsule.

Gap BF jeans, Paige Hidden Hills straight leg jeans (so much that I went and bought a 2nd pair), calf hair leopard print loafers and an Andrew Marc olive green leather jacket.

SW 50/50 boots, the UK version... Slightly longer than the US version.
( I know, so after the fact, but they fixed so many boot holes)

As far as clothing, I am on the bench to pick just one. I have a few 9.5s: a happy yellow denim jacket, a beautiful orange/red silk scarf, and a soft and comfy cognac leather jacket.

Now that I think of it, my best purchase was splurging and getting my hair colored professionally with high lights and low lights. It is going on 4 months ago, and just now starting to look in need of a touch up.

My best purchases are the two Caslon cotton blazers I bought last spring in navy and taupe. They fit just right, go with jeans and my casual lifestyle and they don't look like office-wear.

Without a doubt it was my Classiques Entier white tuxedo jacket. I wore it at least once a week all summer long. I wish I could find a similar jacket in a winter fabric!

So many good buys were made this year for me, thanks to YLF!
I think about my yellow bomber jacket, my glasses, my heeled goretex boots...

But if I must choose, and on the basis of being a savior in moments of total cluelessness, with a fantastic result, then there are two for me, and they were bought the same (lucky) day.
My black slouchy pants (1) and my black city jacket(2). Both from Guess by Marciano, incidentally.

What a fun read! My best purchase of 2012 (cost per wear) is definitely my purple orchid Ansley Ugg slippers. When I'm home, that's what I'm wearing -- they are so warm and comfy!

A close second is my blue chambray workshirt. I enjoy it under a sweater or vest, over a light t-shirt, and by itself. A real workhorse for my casual stay-at-home lifestyle.
