Ask Angie: Pant Length Help Needed Pretty Please

I posted a thread last week about turning my EF faux wrap pants into cropped ankle length instead (sorry - on my phone and can't link to that thread).

I found the fabric of the EF pants a bit light in weight for our cold weather and layering tights underneath makes them cling like crazy.

I also found the full length to make me feel a bit frumpy in these because of the soft fabric and drape - a bit pajamas-esque, you know?

I think cropping them though and turning them into something akin to a silky track pant would work great for warmer weather and increase the likelihood of being worn. Plus adding that bit of ankle and lower calf skin adds structure.

So I have loosely pinned the hems to the length I'm thinking of but would value your opinion on this.

Is this a good length or should they be shorter or longer? Or will these pants not work at all with this alteration?

Thanks in advance :)

(And sorry for the not great pics - phone is all I have access to at the moment)

I like the slightly longer length myself, particularly because it'll still work with flats. Curious what Angie thinks.

I also want them to be a little longer:)

I'm with Aida and Deborah.  I think the flowy pant would be better longer.

Same.  I'd pin them up right at your ankle bone, or just above.  They'll also sit better without the actual cuff - which I realize is just for getting the length right.

All I can see are your SHOES!! Are they comfy? I found them in a local store and am SO tempted. I'm actually tempted by the black if you can believe....I don't have any black summer shoes and could use something dark to anchor a few outfits. But worry the high vamp will be stumpifying with skirts. Then again, I probably would wear mostly with pants.

I am useless on lengths but I think with this type of footwear just above the ankle would work best.

Thank you, thank you, thank you ladies :)

So a wee bit longer, to just come to the ankle bone sounds like the leading length contender.

Just busy the rest of tonight but will re-pin tomorrow.

Suz - I LOVE these shoes! Are they 10 hour walking shoes? Nope. But are they walking for a few blocks and then wearing all day around the office and out for lunch? Yep. I'm also thinking of duplicating and getting black as well. But I'll be honest - I'm not entirely sure they'd work on a low volume foot. The soft leather upper is generous enough on my high volume feet. Worth trying on if you can though.

Sounds good Shannon.  IMHO the trick is ensuring that they look intentional in their length.

I like the length in #2. You want them short enough to look cropped. INTENTIONAL. Super cute.

I will also like them right on your ankle bone - as Aida suggested.

Angie - thanks so much for chiming in! I consider you the expert when it comes to pant lengths :)

Just to clarify, the length is the same in all three pictures.

Hmmm...so leave this pinned length or go a bit longer to ankle bone? That is the question. I'm worried a bit longer will not look intentional enough and more like my pants are too short.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

(Queen Pedantic About Pant Lengths is honoured).

They look shorter in #3 - because of the low vamped footwear.

Yeah. I don't like the dilly dally in-between lengths all that much either. Pin them longer and lets see that - to put your mind at rest more than anything else.

Isn't it amazing how that vamp changes how long the pants look?

Right - will pin them at ankle bone tomorrow and show again with the two sets of footwear. Stay tuned...

Off to go play with Dusty Bottom - an evening tradition :)

Shannon, thanks for this post! I have these same pants and just a few days ago thought about making them lounge wear as they were feeling a bit frumpy. So I tried them rolled a bit with a high vamp, open toe shoe and I liked them much better. I think they will make a great weekend comfy pant so thank you for giving some EF a new shot of life!

I vote a bit longer than this, too-to the ankle bone. Will come back to check for new picties.

I think they need to be longer, but I may be biased because I don't like my pants that short. I'd go with whatever Angie tells you. Let's see a pic with them pinned longer.

Chiming in to report about the peep toes! I have low volume feet and narrow ankles. Normally I am a 37 (6.5)  - but this size was way too big around the ankle. I sized down to a 6 and it seems fine. I'm  'test driving' them at home (natural/tan colour) Love how they look with pants and a denim shirt dress. Thank you Shannon for spotting and posting about these.
